This scene is just so well directed. The horror movie vibes in this scene while we are watching a monster kid, slaughter three men, and still have this kind of confusing empathy towards him. Its very weird for anime not to portray these kind of things in an exagerated overly dramatic and cringy way. But here is perfectly executed.

From him as a child till him growing up to a teen into adulthood and how he got his cross scar. There is also an OVA sequel to the TV Show as well.

After meeting with his master Sejiuro Hiko he realizes that what he is missing is valuing human life. After this he no longer needs to turn into the batosai to use his full strength. HOWEVER. After his battle with Shishio its revealed that because of his injuries and the stress of using his ultimate attack he is gradually getting weaker. So technically he is only at 100% power for about 3 episodes in the series
These OVA series, IMO, is one of the best OVA series ever. Full of melancholy, sadness, characters incredibly well-drawn, dark atmosphere, politics, love, romance, the badass showing his incredible strength, but suddenly finding himself wanting a life without pain and without war, struggling with his internal rage about his foster family being brutally murdered when he was just a kid. It makes me very sad every time I see these OVA series, both the prequel and the sequel.
I definitely agree. As much as I love the main series, honestly I much prefer this grounded melancholic take on the characters and story. Drama, tragedy; it's more my groove. But the main series is still a lot of fun.

What they called the "sequel" of the main story is a 2-part OVA series called Rurouni Kenshin: Seisōhen Both are dark and sad but very beautiful at the same time, the prequel chronicles the story of Himura Kenshin as the "Hitokiri Battōsai" during the final years of the Bakumatsu era while also revealing the origins of his cross-shaped scar and exploring his relationship with a woman named Yukishiro Tomoe. The second part, the sequel, tries to tell the story of Himura Kenshin after the main story, told from the point of view of Kaoru with a Kenshin quite old due to the course of the battles he had in his youth and his struggle with the guilt of leading a happy life after such a destructive past. Although I really appreciate the main story because it is very lovely and funny (and has plenty of good fights, like Kenshin vs Sato, that one is awesome), I rather prefer the OVA series.
Something I liked more about the manga is that during these battles Kenshin used his trademark tecniques, and we could see just how DEVASTATING the Hitten Mitsurugi Ryu was using a real sword.
Hiko even said, despite Kenshin use reverse blae, he still could kill someone with it if Kenshin unable to manage his power/strength when he use Hitenmitsurugi.
Gosh, this is so sad. Shigekura sacrificed himself to save Akira, _his own bodyguard_ no less, because he felt Akira’s life was worth more than his own (probably since they’d just been talking about Tomoe before Kenshin showed up). But despite being terrified, Akira’s honor would not allow him to retreat from his fight with Kenshin, thus negating Shigekura’s sacrifice and inadvertently preluding to a massive turning point in Kenshin’s life.
It would have had consequences, you might even be punished with death (and no honor). Just to show the faction, nobody runs away. Like in any war, your own faction would kill you if you try to scape, or make your life hard, you would be treated as a deserter or a traitor.
I remember the first time I saw this, I was in awe the way Kenshin just mercilessly wasted these dudes, I see why Battousai the manslayer was so scary, just saying his name is intinidating

If you don’t watch the ova you’ll find his desire not to kill in the anime very annoying. Everything about this prequel is so aesthetically pleasing it could’ve been an anime on its own. This is how I imagine the atmosphere of vagabond would’ve been if they ever animated it. I honestly like this prequel ova series over the actual anime. I like both but this was better to me

EDIT: There may be some timeline errors, though. The Ikedaya incident later in the OVA happened in 1864, while the main story in the anime and manga starts fourteen years later in 1878. I could have sworn that Kenshin says that he's 28 in the main series. That would make Kenshin 14 in the OVA...
