- Was there a crucial battle that lost Mussolini his iron grip on fascist Italy?
Every battle is both a victory and a defeat - it depends which flag you fly. Across every theatre of the Second World War battles were decided not only by strategy but by armies in their element, capitalizing on the terrain and with better access to supplies or by forces stretched beyond their limits, facing unforeseen conditions and targets underestimated. These battles won and lost would determine possession of territory, of resources, and of the strength to go on fighting. For some of the battles it was the victory that most influenced the future course of the war. For others, it was the defeat. From sweeping offensives to special operations, this is the story of the battles won and battles lost that shaped the outcome of the greatest conflict in history.

Too true. Unlike today's History Channel, these documentaries actually teach you something.
Marshall Zhukov, what a man!
Asking the Italians to stop the Red Army is like asking a screen door to stop a tsunami.
nice line, it rhymes

You can't hate what you didn't love at some point.
Cool

The first documentary I watched in this channel covered the Allies battles in South-East Asia and North Africa, it was named _Operation Barbarossa_ . The second one is named _Operation Uranus_ and it is effectively specialized in the British fights in Singapore. So maybe if this channel happens to faithfully offer something about the Soviet rule in WW2, I'd need to type in the Search: _Operation Desert Storm_ to find it.
so true
General Percivel was in command of the British forces in Ireland during their war for independence in 1918-1921. He was completely incompetent in that war and lost to a small force of gunmen. Yet they still gave him an army of 80,000 in Singapore
He probably was "one of the good chaps"! Ah, the good old British meritocracy, it has made Great Britain what she is today! 😉
Churchill had his ISSUES, but that’s a different story!😬

bruh 70% of the entire video doesn't even talk about italy
@Cheef Smokealot title is still misleading, I expected a better analysis on the Italian front instead of them doing widely known WW2 battles with a couple battles in Italy
Their is a whole series of these that cover all the different battles.
Still good documentary lol. Very misleading tho your right
Nbd cares about Italy. Go jpn
They need to find more clips of Zhukov 😂... Every single WW2 doco has that stock clip of him working on the battle map
May not be many out there - Stalin had him disgraced and demoted after the war, might have destroyed anything that made him look heroic or capable....

In the Singapore defence there are papers that suggest that there were units that were willing to defend.... Indian soldiers and officers were not willing to give up but the higher ranking British officers were just in a fuss... They didn't have the right intelligence and japanese advanced through places where Percival least expected.... Had it been wholly indian or Singaporean forces they would have defended to the last man... But the British were just too afraid... You can see the series the forgotten army for more info. It is about. The Indian National army that was formed after the Singapore capture
Wow, Japan was only willing to fight to the death, look what happened to them. Just because a commander doesn’t let his men get uselessly slaughtered doesn’t mean they were cowards. It means that they weren’t idiots.
So glad to find these videos. Well put together, with good commentary! Lots of video, well, film footage I've never seen before, both from Axis and Allies sources.
Brilliantly written!
Member of my family fought and died at Monte Cassino - Piotr Wargocki
Are you Polish?
@@faskii45odogwu99 lots of Polish
The bombing of Monte cassino was one of the biggest blunder of the second world war, the Germans was never in the building until it was bombed, then fought for more than a month then left, the Allies lost 40,000 men for nothing...
That’s widely disputed. It’s believed the Germans were using the structure as an observation post. Just because they claim they weren’t you are inclined to believe the nazi’s? 🤦
I was fortunate to be stationed in Latina, Italy, for six years, and visited many, many WWII battle sites such as Anzio and Monte Cassino. One of the most interesting events was the Italians finding a whole American fighter off the shore of a local beach where I lived....GOD BLESS THE GREATEST GENERATION EVER.....

*Thanks for vid, very informative!!*
Also, Stalingrad was not spread on both sides of the Volga. The city existed mostly on the western side of the Volga.
Just discovered this channel - absolutely fantastic material!
Would it be possible for you to upload the series' 'Battlefield Britain' and '20th Century Battflefields' with Peter and Dan Snow? Saw them years ago but haven't been able to find decent versions of them since - TIA
You can find decent versions, though you have to wade through loads of COD flotsam to find them.

I suggest AdBlock Plus and then you don't see ANY commercials!
Nice documentary
I hate when they show the wrong equipment and time of year, it's a winter battle and clips of no snow on the ground
The insanity of war.
3:20 Well, you forgot to mention that the bombing attack came too soon, sooner than announced and it hit the monastery with most of the monks still inside as well as most of the artefacts...
Monks are fictional.
I'm so glad that this is NOT an american production! We get to see the real story this way, without any self absorbed propaganda.
Because it is the only country that does that right? Never has a victor rewritten anything through their eyes. Hate us cause u ain't us
I did not realize that the United States was the only country to use propaganda.
This is the top comment for me, and now I know I will watch all the way through. Thx!
Yeah this way we get pure British propaganda.
This is like..like... Netflix for history!!
What a disaster. The final battle of Stalingrad was in the winter, in the snow. Images from a battle in the summer, no snow at all. The parade of the captured Germans in Moskou was NOT after Stalingrad, but during operation Bagration, nearly 1,5 year later.
The decision of win or loose felt near Kursk and Prokorovka were the Germans tried to retake the initiative but failed.
The defeat at Stalingrad was a turning point, but not decisive: not have reached the oil of Maikopf and the Caucasus was the real deciding fact.
31:01mins some rare footage of the German rifle grenade in action.
It was with great courage by the Polish Army taking Monte Cassino.
It is Friedrich Wilhelm Ernst Paulus - not von Paulus.
24:45 that's one big gun
Great title.
The town below Monte Casino was also bombed which hindered allied tanks & the advance.
Very good, clear and well-written. But the German general (and later field marshal) was not VON Paulus. Just Paulus.
He was field marshal at the moment of surrender. Got the title 2 days before his surrender.
Interesting
33:04, I hope that was a trip.

I know that never have so many owed so much to so few, but did they really have to drag the Canadian Billy Bishop in (from WWI, yet) at the end?
exactly!
It was really exciting the part where there was maneuvering in the rear in the Uranus Operation.
Greatest generation.
Not so sure about that, it depends on the perspective
Look up Jakob Pavlov and Pavlov's House sometime for a story of sheer determination, resourcefulness, and balls of steel.
I am a history nut but cannot take this seriously because of the operation's name...
Sorry for my inner child 😂
For the Anzio landing, first the narrator calls it a “bridgehead” a couple of times, then later says, “beachhead.” What bridge exactly? 😆
bridgehead - a strong position secured by an army inside enemy territory from which to advance or attack.
Is it cool if I watch these on stream?
This was our finest hour. Winston Churchill
since when has Stalingrad been in Italy.
Is this a repost??..i feel like i have watched it here before.
Anzio is the Allies version of Gallipoli 1915.
The show would be better without the two weirdos showing the battle plans.
They could have at least had them in uniform. 😉 🤣
THANK YOU. I totally agree these vids could do without the strange smug looks while moving the horrible markers. Induvial youtubers have perfected the art of the army/division boxes in accurate potions on detailed maps and here they have the weirdo faces being made with paper marks in the most vernal of positions.
Isn't that the same geek who played Percival in the Malaya Campaign?
It's a British documentary. Maybe they didn't want to copy the Americans using cgi or British actors are cheaper than making cgi :D
@@Hobbes4ever they could’ve kept the dudes moving the pieces... but just cut out the weird faces made to one another haha
Greatest Battle of the Italian Campaign: The Battle of the Straits of Messina, when the British navy and the USAAF destroyed the Wermacht as they tried to reach the Italian Mainland.
Big victory: the British and Americans didn't show up. Wehrmacht 1, Allies 0.
That was because Patton went on his useless " end-around " to try to beat Montgomery into Messina. Thus, the Germans escaped.
Stalingrad was to the Eastern Front (the Great Patriotic War) what Midway was to the war in the Pacific. Prior to Stalingrad, everything was pretty much going Germany's way. After Stalingrad, it was generally a steady retreat all the way back to Berlin.
Singapore was to the British a prime example of ignoring the first rule of war, "Never underestimate your enemy". Of course, having a massive naval base but no navy was problematic.
Anzio;
"Well, this is a nice beach. I think I'll stay here, catch a few rays, crack open a few cold ones..."
- But the road to Rome is open. We can take it.
"Chill, pull up a lawn chair, have a brewski."
"never underestimate your enemy" are you kidding? He overestimated them because of their confidence and bold tactics, over defended areas that didnt need to be defended, he also had no tanks/anti artillery, and very novice soldiers. That isnt "underestimating"
Stalingrad is a little-known small town near Lake Como.
Beautiful place, just a small mistake, it's near Venice

‘If we flank them, and come up the rear and finish them off’ - Operation Uranus.

4:57 @DPA this is how you say it
The name of the commander of the 6th Army was not Von Paulus. It was Freiderich Paulus. There was no Von in front of his last name.
"Wait Mein Fuhrer, my Luftwaffe can completely resupply the 6th Army !" Says a man wearing his homemade uniform 😐
Sometimes we can be happy about nepotism lol
What made you think that constant background noise (music) was a good addition. Would be 100% better withoiut it and we could hear the narrative and the historians better.
Why is this titled "Italy" when it is about Stalingrad?
I'm wondering what the term "Operation Uranus" is actually referring to. =)
The Russian battle plan to counter barbarossa
Proud polish people
Stalingrad
Singapore
Italy
Germans had been defeated in the Battle of Monte Cassino by the British and the Poles during Italian campaign of WW2. The battle took place in hilly benedictine monastery Monte Cassino. Finally the British succeeded in taking the benedictine monastery. Meanwhile the United States took Italian capitol, Rome, and entered the city in June 1943. Before that, the British and the United States forces had taken Sicily, Italy. After taking Rome, the British and the United States captured Naples, Italy, in October 1943. The Battle of Italy in WW2 was a stepping stone to Normandy Landing in June 1944.
I wonder if they knew about the rings around Uranus?
I never thought I would be watching a documentary about Stalingrad commented by Lex Luthor himself.
The ads are out of control.
it can be a very dangerous thing that could take place when two people do not agree on something and they want to fight and alot of people could get hurt, families destroyed, and worse when them two people are in control over two different nations. but the difference is do you follow honor or lies.
Stalingrad both sides of the Volga? No, No,No!!
Show a map....then have the camera spin around 360° .... very helpful. 😪
it was going in order then we go from 1944 to 1940 and triggered me
For this kind of operation it is best to make your assault from the rear
The cost of "following orders".
Anzio was another death trap, the Germans brought up there 800mm rail gun and the disaster had begun causing the Allies to literally dig underground bunkers in order to survive🤔😰
Kellyanne conway, you're a badass! 👍🙏
Today 30 years ago USSR collapse.. 26 dec 2021 ... Missing USSR (CCCP) from India🇮🇳
This is abou Singapore.
In operation winter storm the Germans didn't make ut to Stalingrad because most units where not Even German, Romania, chec, Austrian soldiers
But a Romanian company of 75 men did make it through to Stalingrad, they had bit of ammo & food, water, definitely would of been a relief to eat good for even just a day after 2 months of eating crackers, rats, grass,
B rations would of seemed amazing
They were out flanked
The more I see, the more I understand the eastern front and it's role in the Hitler's demise.
Eastern front was it's demise
Stalingrad would serve as a flanking attack on Moscow? Did the producer actually check the distances involved?
That backfired in Miami didn't it?
Poor percival didnt have churchills guts or yamamotos brains. Poor dude

Of course Singapore was going to surrender. Yes, on paper they had a superior army. in reality besides a few battalions they were no better than home guard. Expecting that army to defeat a well trained army with 5 years of fighting experience is foolish. All of Britain’s best troops had been recalled home when they were sure the Nazi’s were going to invade. Yes, the overall numbers are an embarrassment but look at it from Percival’s perspective. He had been pounded by an endless artillery and falling bombs from the sky for days. He had no planes, tanks, and barely any antitank guns. His communications had been cut so I doubt he knew the Japanese split their army to simultaneously hit Singapore, Hong Kong, Southeast Asia and the Philippines. I am sure he figured the Japanese roughly knew the size of the force he had when they made their invasion plans. They would surely invade with an overwhelming force. Based on what he had endured the last few days I am sure cemented that view. I am sure he also expected the Japanese to treat them like European countries usually treat POW’s. I have no doubt if he could see how his men were going to be treated over the next 4 years he would have fought to the last bullet. So, let’s not be to harsh in the assessment of the battle of Singapore.
I doubt he would have fought to the last bullet against the Japanese.
Probably until their bayonets went dull and broke. I know I'd never want to be in a Japanese POW camp.
what has Singapore got to do with Operation Uranus?
Stalingrade?????? Not bad history, HighSchool level, precious little history about the stated topic!!!
The US air Force level the ministry but there was no Germans in it at the time, then the Germans went in and stop the advance in Italy for months, what a blunder...
