- One of China's most successful writers, Yan talks about writing fiction in China today. He sees the people's loss of dignity within Chinese culture and under Chinese state power and compromises made by authors faced with this lack of dignity and loss of intellectual integrity. The question is how to compromise in life while remaining faithful in one's writing. In the real world, dignified writing can only come from heroic characters.
Born in 1958 in Henan Province, China, he is the author of many novels and short-story collection, including Serve the People!, and has won China's two top literary awards, the Lu Xun for Nian, yue, ri (The Year, the Month, the Day), and the Lao She for Shouhuo (Pleasure). He has been short listed for the Mann Booker International Prize.

I don't think the translatetion might not be very clear when Mr Yan talked about his brother and the land permit for his house. Yan's brother refused to bribe the village head and claimed it wasn't as dark as it's said -- in the end he still got the permit for his children's housing without having to do so. But what didn't know was that when the village head's son was ill and sought medical treatment in a Beijing hospital, it was Mr Yan who spent a lot of money and helped the son get the good medical care. Pardon for my limited English. Just want to help make the story clear in case of any confusion.

I wonder why the translator didn’t translate the part at 28:30 about Yan Lianke’s brother using a shovel and threatening to chop their heads off, instead he just translated it to “kill them”
