  • Meet Mustang No. 1236, now known as “Amira.”
    126 days ago, Amira was wild-one of the BLM’s 46,000+ mustangs in holding waiting for adoption. The “U” in her brand marks Amira as a “3-striker,” meaning she was passed up for adoption-unwanted-three times by no fault of her own.
    Mustang Maddy trained Amira for the Mustang Heritage Foundation's Mustang Magic competition, in which trainers have less than 130 days to train a wild mustang.
    These competitions serve to showcase the trainability of America’s wild horses and raise awareness for the some 40,000 mustangs currently waiting in holding pens to be adopted. After the competition, the trained mustangs are auctioned off to the public to be put into caring homes.
    Maddy and Amira captivated the sold-out audience with her freestyle performance, earning a standing ovation and the championship title. Maddy used the money she won in the competition to bid on Amira herself.
    She was successful in adopting Amira and will be giving her a forever home. Amira will join Maddy and her team of trained mustangs to travel the country and raise awareness for the mustangs still awaiting adoption, as well as to educate the public on equine behavior and communication techniques to achieve more successful horse-human relationships.
    In their fairytale freestyle performance, Madison showcased the incredible talents of Amira-a horse once cast off and considered unwanted. The lesson of Mustang Maddy and the amazing Amira ring true: there is greatness in us all if we choose to see the beauty within.

    I've never seen a domestic horse stop on a dime without stepping slightly or sliding forward like this mustang did!... very athletic responses, I was in AWE! To go from being wild to performing an amazing routine completely out of his normal environment in a loud crowd and music, and an enormous arena & learning everything from scratch in just over 4 months is absolutely a miracle... such is a bond of trust of safety & of patient love.. This was absolutely beautiful in so many aspects to witness... God bless her for adopting a beautiful, once roaming free Mustang, possibly destined for slaughter (which angers me), instead of purchasing a domestic horse... giving the Mustang his LIFE back... I strongly feel that if a Mustang isn't adopted, that crazy inhumane and unjustified 3rd strike...like the horse is a crime, that Mustang should be returned to a protected habitate to roam FREE once more... it's their God given right & we, humans, should respect that!...As I watched him run... I imagined him without a rider, running wild & free... a beautiful Mustang, yes... a Cinderella story from destitute & literally being rescued by a beautiful Soul who believed in him...🦋

    • @amyfluffyfluff880
      @amyfluffyfluff880 2 года назад +2

      What I heard about mustang makeover is that they do this because the habitat where they live in is not capable of providing enough food and water to keep all the horses alive and there are too many horses in the wild for people to feed them so they founded mustang makeover to give them a second chance or else many of them would be already dead ( though I don't know if this is related to mustang makeover or if this is another program)

    • @amyfluffyfluff880
      @amyfluffyfluff880 2 года назад

      And also I didn't know about the 3 strike system, maybe that's really not from mustang makeover 🤔

      Viola old comment ik but if you were talking about the spurs-if used correctly they dont harm the horse and instead can give clearer signals/cues bc theyre thinner than your lower leg.

    Love the team work and trust the horse has in you, everyone commenting about the spurs they are not hurting the horse, she has them on because it's easier that way when she's bareback and no bridle, she's using them properly so it shouldn't hurt the mustang

  • @PhelanVelvel
    @PhelanVelvel 6 лет назад +158

    I'm very much all about avoiding the use of force on animals, and I can say that people dismissing this incredible performance because of the very presence of spurs are lacking in reason. She communicates with the horse via gentle touch. I don't see her kicking the horse or even using the spurs much at all. I have to wonder how many people criticising the spurs have put several times as much pressure on a horse by squeezing/kicking, just not using spurs. I'm sorry, but it makes no sense. I truly believe the horse is far more comfortable with her occasional use of the spurs than pretty much any horse is with a piece of metal in its mouth the entire time it is being ridden. I'm not calling bits evil or anything, I understand why they are used. I'm just pointing out that you can't be hurt by something that barely touches you...so if you think her spurs are cruel, surely bits are, also? And how many critics commenting here use bits...?

    • @verenasutherland
      @verenasutherland 5 лет назад +20

      @@cassofstupidity5168 The BLM rounds up Mustangs off the range to control the herd population. These Mustangs are in holding and need homes. Mustang Makeovers like the one above are one way to bring more awareness to this issue. Should these horses have been rounded up in the first place? We can debate. Probably not. But they are rounded up and they need homes. I adopted one myself. Yes, I would prefer for her to be running free, but the home I give her is better than being stuck in the pens.

      Used correctly Spurs are a training and riding aid . They are only cruel when poeple.uae them with out knowing how .and they are still not sharp .and out of darkness would you rather see them slaughtered using cruel practices.

    • @ughmary3069
      @ughmary3069 3 года назад +6

      spurs are a great training aid if used right but people just automatically diss them because some people can’t use them correctly. i have short legs and my horses where much better + happier when i rode with spurs. same with whips/crops. they aren’t for beating the horse to go fast- it’s and extension of your arm a
      or leg. Bits are really controversial. I use them because that’s what works best and have never caused any of my horses problems. honestly the most problems i have had is bitless horses being really heavy in their heads and not engaging their hind end.

    • @aff77141
      @aff77141 2 года назад +3

      Honestly! I hate riding without spurs, I can give a good kick, but squeezing tight enough for a response is tough, and it just feels like too much to put on an animals side when i can easily do the same with a simple tap

    This a beautiful performance, I can’t believe she was able to do this with a once wild mustang
    This is and old post, but the comments about spurs bother me. If she’s completely tackless, do you really think she’s using the harshest spurs ever? I only use spurs sometimes, and I roll them up my hand and arm with the same pressure I use on my horse, and if anything it’s a massage, really not painful at all. They are an extension of her leg, to make it look like she’s not doing anything.
    Thank you for reading

      There is no such thing as wild geldings. There are wild stallions though. All male horses are born as stallions, but if humans want to, they can 'geld' the horse so he will be less aggressive/excited and he cannot make foals. Maybe you already know this, but anyways... This mustang in the video is a mare.

I never used a bit or spur on them and trained them off love and trust they are the sweetest and come running when someone comes to the gate... this video also shows that no matter the age,breed or background any horse can change with any amount of love

    Maddy, I too love Mustangs and have adopted three beautiful ones. We live in Ridgway, CO and am looking forward to your Norwood training clinic in June. My black mustang adopted from a Nevada herd near Battle Mountain, was prison trained in Canon City, using the Anderson method. He spooks at everything! And he really hates gates, maybe PTSD from his round up. Shadow is the best horse ever, I just wish he would not spook all the time. Looking forward to your stay in Ridgway this summer. I live on Loghill and pasture them up here during winter, and they stay at Eagle Hill Ranch at pasture during summer.
    Teri

      Ask Rick Gore/think like a horse he has a mustang called Mr. Tanner. He doesn't like how Clint Anderson trains horses either. I love to watch Rick Gore's videos because he understands horses and he is funny to listen to.

    I don't get why everyone is complaining about the spurs, but doesn't see that Amira is not running clearly. Canter is supposed to be a three-beat gait... The trot is also very stiff and the horse is not stepping under it's center. I guess she has serious pain in her back and should definitely not be ridden without a saddle. A saddle is not harming a horse. When it fits properly (which it always should) it's spreading the weight of the rider and protecting the horseback from the rider bumping into the back. Maddy definitely is a good rider, but during the sliding stops she is bumping into the back.

    This is genuinely impressive, especially considering some horses who have been ridden for years aren't even this responsive and this horse was only trained for a couple of months. wow

    If there's 2 things I love it's mustangs and liberty work. I don't know if I could get my mustangs to perform like this, but they do it alone in a round pen and I do brideless drill team with jumps, and it's literally magical being able to ride like that. There is nothing like liberty
