Boomers Don’t Like Watching the Grandkids THEY Demand

  • I do not care, I will have this fight - Boomers had loads of societal benefits that Millennials and Gen Z do NOT have, but Boomers pretend that they did it all themselves and we should have to too.

When I was a little kid, my gen X mom kept me away from my shitty boomer grandparents because of the way they talked down and belittled her around me. I’m 30 now and there was a time where she felt a little bad that I never got the chance to build my own relationship with them, but I was quick to point out that I wouldn’t want to spend time with people talking trash about my awesome mom. ❤
These were the kind of religious nuts who chastised and humiliated my mom because she was divorced, I can only imagine how shitty they’d be to me once the find out I’m engaged to a woman. In other words, no love lost where there’s no love to find.

Not to mention, her money was worth more relative to what it’s worth now when she was waiting tables in her 20s. Her hard work paid off. I know people now working 60 hours a week well above minimum wage to just stay afloat. Our hard work is worth next to nothing.

My father once grumbled "well, I guess your sisters going to be the only one to give me grandkids." And I said "yup!" Because he didn't deserve kids, why should he deserve grandkids? Yep. This has been needed to be talked about for a really long time now. Everyone is saying, “Don’t expect your parents to watch YOUR kids.”
Yet why are our parents allowed to expect us to have kids?
Or worse, they are allowed to shame us for having the discernment not to have kids because we can’t afford it!
She’s right. “If my car breaks down I’m destitute.”
We are living well past the great depression into the great destitution. And our parents that decided to bring us into this awful mess, have decided that they are done, simply because legally they can be. Which makes me feel like they have always wanted to be done, even before they started.
They only had kids so that we could give them grandchildren.
Grandchildren that they don’t want to have any responsibility for.
    There! I said it.
    It needed to be said.

Hi hi… Gen-Xer here. Let me give you a couple tips from our playbook. 1. Don’t GAF whether your parents want you to have kids are not. You’re the one responsible, so your decision to have kids needs to be independent of their wishes for your life. 2. Getting a good job after college sucked for us, too. That’s why many of us became entrepreneurs. Oh and “We didn’t start the fire.” That’s our thing tyvm 😂😂… But in all seriousness, do what you can. Be responsible and make the place (campsite, park, or even the world) better than when you found it. Go volunteer at your local food bank or homeless shelter. Oh, God. You people are just insufferable. I didn't pull up any ladders; as a matter of fact, I went to many high schools to talk about a career in court reporting. There is such a shortage throughout the U.S. and Canada, and my Boomer generation is retiring or about to retire.
There is no limit on how much you can earn, male or female, you can easily make, $120,000 a year. It's a two-year program as opposed to four.
Guess how many people took me up on spending a day in court with me? Zero. When I asked why, there were two main reasons: One, it looks really hard; yes, it is, but worth it; and two, not glamorous enough, would rather go for a four-year degree, etc.
Stop putting us all in the same boat and stop blaming my generation for everything. The generational finger-pointing started with Millenials, not Boomers or GenXers. Also, maybe, just maybe, who you vote for has consequences.

I know what it takes to look after children. Been a school teacher for over 35 years. I do not have the energy or desire to look after little ones for any extended length of time, especially with the very different standards/ rules my friends child asks her to abide by when she babysits her grandkids. My patience is at a very low ebb with children who haven’t heard no or been taught some very basic ways to deal with being corrected in any way.

What I’m trying to say that it is possible there are deeper reasons why an older adult might want to watch kids other than sheer selfishness. My friend in the role of grandparent caregiver tried to impose structure on her grandkids life when sitting for him and got countermanded and undermined by his parents at every turn. They didn’t want to impose structure or bedtime on a toddler because ‘he would go to bed when he was tired’, seriously he was so overtired but seemed to have advanced fomo as a baby.

I'm not a Boomer, I'm Gen X but I can explain some things. Older generations had "career mothers" what stayed at home, and they had children while younger so taking care of grandkids was easier and a way to counteract "empty nest syndrome". My own parents got married late, and I did as well, so it was hard for them to take care of their grandkids...they exhausted them easily. Sounds like your mother is near retirement so she can't afford to lose her job in addition to tiring easier. For the record, my wife has a PhD but she stays home taking care of the kids and doing her own projects. It is possible to have children on a single salary (dirt poor parents around the world have been doing it since there were humans), but you need to make sacrifices. When my kids need child care, we will be there for them and hopefully, we won't be worn out like my parents were.

Nope, it’s a Boomer problem, because, when we’re out of money to take care of the elderly, they will be the ones on the streets suffering. Less and less Millennials are willing to take care of their aging parents because of how said parents treated them.

@@NarcWhisperer BS. I’m a boomer, from the 50’s, who was orphaned at age 6. I had my grandmother who would beat my brother and I. I was on my own for my whole life. No help from anyone. I managed. Worked in factories. Those are all gone. Sent to China. That’s not the boomers fault. Unless they are ultra wealthy. I got my house in the 90’s at 14%. Not all boomer’s are like the way you state. I would gladly watch my granddaughter but my insane X who I divorced in 1983!!, (the reason I don’t date) has got parental rights, the Courts always give custody to woman, and refuses to let me and my son see or speak with her. So to those who say boomers got it made and life was a breeze. You are wrong. It wasn’t for everyone.
My insane X is a boomer so I guess some of what said rings true.

Historically kids would be raised by the village or a large extended family of uncles, aunts, grandparents, in laws, cousins, etc.

@@mr.midnight23 not in my case. Many were dead and the others were afraid of my only grandparent. Only one stepped up to the plate. She took us out a few times. No guidance. Left on are own to figure out a path.
