I saw Chris & John Cambell at the Caravan of Dreams in Fort Worth 1991. It was a night of National guitars & nuevo blues. I sat at a small table right in front of his mic stand. When he played the last slide note at the end of "Make the Dirt Stick" it sent chills down my spine and I let out a slight gasp. He heard me, grinned & nodded his head. John Cambell followed him with the darkest, howling, growling performance ever. Both of them are gone now - died prematurely in their forties.
@@handmadeDenver It was one of a kind & it was kind of dreamlike with the rooftop arboretum & bar. I saw Gatemouth Brown there 3 times, J.J. Cale, Buckwheat Zydeco, Los Lobos, Loudon Wainwright. Cassandra Wilson, John Hammond, Lyle Lovett, Richard Thompson, David Lindley, Ricky Lee Jones, Lindsey Buckingham, Ray Davies, etc.
I completely agree, Logan. How many other artists out there are completely impossible to replicate. I've seen people try, but they never will. We were blessed to have him.
I actually don't know who Myles Kennedy is, but if he likes Chris Whitley he's gotta be a good dude. I once posed as a journalist to spend 90 minutes with CW. I'm not proud of it, but I'm glad I did it. I appreciate these clips being here. It's great to still be able to see him play.
phenomenal. i was there. cant thank you enough for posting this. makes me realize how lucky i was to be there and how i didnt blow any of its epicness out of proportion. RIP CW
Ballpeen hammer.. such a notorious rendition.. and accordingly makes me tear up to the thought of this mans demise... he was pure genius.. a rawly powerful soul.
Too bad another great one is gone. Just like the Vaughn brother, never be another one like him either! When did he pass? Cancer is evil, and Now I am fighting the battle myself. Just went for my first treatments today! :( We will beat this thing with music like this for my quiet time. Saw him live in the early 90's AMAZING
How did you go? I sat up drinking irish whisky till 2a.m. last night trying to work this out! So close, just not getting that sliding chord at the top of the reel. What tuning did you hit on? My (bad) ear found f#-d#,f#,a#,d# as a base to work off.
Well...there is some missing footage from this show...on that night he performed a rendition of "Phone Call from Leavenworth" that was absolutely terrifying in its precision and intensity. Does anyone have footage?
@soapbarbob exactly!thats why He took him so soon...Whitley might me sittin on Jesus's lap and playing balleen hammer right now...God bless u chris..may u rest in peace
i was there! SO SO grateful that this high quality footage exists. RIP Chris - a TRUE artist and musical genius

Caravan of Dreams was the best venue for ANY music. Lots of fond memories of that place.

Chris Whitley: An uncompromising artist residing in his own boundaries yet willing to give to those ready to listen. RIP, dude.

Love Accordingly here so much more than the album version.
SONGWRITERS, MUSICIANS, we are all guilty of not living up to this, and many others who have left such powerful examples to follow
Has anyone tabbed this out for banjo? I'm trying my hardest to learn by ear, very close, but still missing something
How did you go with tab?
