I have a power equipment dealer a few streets over from me. They charge $175 for a tune-up, but if you read their description online, basically any additional parts besides oil is extra. Pickup and delivery is a minimum of $100 depending on distance. So basically if someone has their mower picked up for an oil change alone it is $275. Now I can see why people will just go buy a new mower instead of getting their mower serviced. Also instead of the Kohler/Briggs filters I've been using Napa 1348 or Napa 21348. Same size and threads, but seem to be better constructed compared to the Kohler/Briggs filters I've cut open. They are also much cheaper, and I'm guessing that's because they fit a wide variety of applications. Napa 7035 for the really tight fit applications.
Tuff Torq K46 trans fluid should be changed at 100 hours then every 200 hours after that. Which means pulling the transaxle out of the tractor since there is no drain plug on the K46. It's pretty much a HAVE TO DO on a K46 if you want the transaxle to last more than a couple hundred hours. They are arguably the cheapest and biggest POS transaxle ever used in a mower. Other than those POS Plastic transaxles that you'll find in some of the newer mowers. The 1st time you change it you will notice quite a bit of fine metal in the fluid if you strain it. That is normal from the gears and pump and drive motor breaking in.
The JD dealer down here on the Treasure Coast is rip off, and the service department sucks. I’m not naming names for my own protection. By the way, did you grease the muffler bearing? Cheers, you made Riley Boy’s day, which I saw at 8am this morning.
That's lots of Kinder Eggs for young Riley Boy for sure. JD Dealers are all about the money in service and parts. Even when they don't perform the service they claim to have performed, which was the case with this mower. I marked and indicated areas that should have been inspected and serviced and over half of the claimed service details on the invoice were not performed. When I confronted them about it, they said "Prove It". Prove It? Really? I just told you I marked and indicated areas that should have been serviced that weren't touched. What kind of proof do you want? They replied, well, you're one individual with "Claims" of poor service...come back when you have proof. Since then, I've taken on about a dozen Deere's to perform service on. Money out of their pocket and money that stays in the owners pockets. Cheers Jim! I hope you're doing well. Zip~
Reynolds used to take advantage of my grandma the same way. They should be ashamed. You're a good neighbor. I will not be offended if you delete this comment if you want to Zippo. Don't know how you feel about the previously mentioned dealer. It's your channel.
Danny, I remember when you were asking me about a good next mower. Typically, that is fuel build up in the cylinder. I would install a fuel shut off and shut if off before you turn off the engine. Also, I would pull and check the spark plug(s). If they're black, replace the Air Filter and it never hurts to give the engine a good cleaning including under the blower housing. Good luck with it and keep me posted my Friend! Zip~
This riding mower cannot discharge the grass properly because its outlet is too small and the fan is not efficient. One solution is to mow your lawn every 3 days (2 days in the spring) in order to mow a very small amount of grass. If you wait one week, the grass outlet will be blocked all the time. Conclusion: this machine is made to mow when you have no grass, a machine to mow in the desert!
Thanks for this! It's a simpler way of saying that Deere's are basically junk until you get way up on the totem pole. Then you're paying twice what they are worth. Zip~

Can you explain the reasoning behind knowing the blades need sharpened by seeing the grass dust? Is it that a dull blade is pulverizing the grass instead of cutting?
Exactly right Michael. When your grass clippings go from actual grass to small particles, it's definitely time to sharpen the blades. Cheers! And Great Question! Zip~
Of course. I'm not a hack lol. I've got a professional bearing balancer as well as a professional blade sharpening machine. Nothing but the best for my neighbors and friends and the occasional customer. Zip~
It's ridiculous to think that they charge more than it would cost you to rent a U-Haul trailer to deliver and pick up your own mower. Not to mention, way more than a tow company would charge for local service. Cheers my Friend! Zip~
Service interval is a suggested 100 hours on oil after preliminary oil change at 5 hours then again at 50. The Air Filter replacement really depends on the conditions the mower is being used in. Dry arid and dusty conditions would require a new air filter much more frequently than in more moderate and less dusty conditions. Best rule of thumb is to check that day light comes through the filter. If not, replace, if so, it can wait until the next service interval. Cheers Oakie! Great question! Zip~
Runs like a deer an smells like a John my D105 has a cotton pickin plastic hydrostatic bruce jenner in it i remember when John Deere lawn tractors where quality built machines.
I sold a D105 a few months ago. I bought it with 70 hours and sold it with 94 hours. It was moving slower and lower, then one day it stuck in reverse. I found out somewhere online that lifting the foot pedal would allow it to go forward again. There's little info about the D105 moving slowly online. It could be the belt, drive pulleys, or transaxle. Any of the above require dropping the transaxle to update. My knees are too shot to make 3 attempts + parts cost. I sold it to a guy that fixes/resells mowers. I saw it posted online the day after I sold it. He said the belt was bad and he also changed the pulleys to be on the safe side. I found a good deal on a used X500 while searching for a X300 series. The X500 is built like a tank in comparison to the D105. JD should be ashamed for ever releasing the D105. The transaxle should be renamed "turdomatic." Be sure to see if yours is eligible for the transaxle recall if it fails. Mine was not.
To be fair to the dealership, probably took someone an hour to come get the mower, do the paperwork, etc. $160 for an hours work seems fair. But anyway, great work and information, thanks for the great quality video!
