I come back and watch this every so often. I honestly knew when I watched this race that he was going to win the Triple Crown. I've watched plenty of horse racing in my day, and I've owned horses for 30 years. I know horses, and it was obvious from this race that this horse found running not just easy but also fun! He is as happy as a clam in this race. He had the mechanics, the movement, the talent, but his biggest asset was his disposition. A great-minded horse with phenomenal movement. They don't make them like him every day. "One special horse" indeed.
You know your thoroughbreds! It was AP’s long and effortless stride that let me know he was going to be tough to beat. This race was a perfect example; it was his long and consistent stride that wore down the competition. This colt could put down 24 second splits all day long, like a monotone.
I'm with you. When I saw this race I knew he would win in Kentucky and could really win the triple crown and he did and was never truly tested. Horse of a lifetime
Whoooo did this stretch call!?! They absolutely killed it! Seriously awesome job with the announcing. Obviously AP's performance was seriously awesome, too. :)
+Marilyn Shively I truly never never thought I'd see a horse like him in my life. I was born in 1983 and missed the Triple Crowns of the 1970s by many years. Up until last year, Point Given was my favorite and best 3 year old I ever witnessed, and he was a true best and I think a well-deserved legend who fully belongs in the HOF. But Pharoah is straight out of the 1970s. His is the reincarnation of Seattle Slew in nearly every way. LEGEND!
+cgarnet01 I am quite a bit older than you and I remember Slew's triple crown (one of my favs)- and then the next year Affirmed won the crown- then 37 years-- until Pharoah, and oh, how he showed how great he is--- I love watching his races---over and over ( I must be a little weird) ---I am so happy he retired sound and healthy. If you watch Slew's Belmont and Pharoah's Belmont, they are very much alike.
+Marilyn Shively ---- Tho not AP, another race recap I think you might enjoy ~ check out 'California Chrome Turns to Gold' on U-Tube - would so luved to have had an AP race in this format......
Amazing how still American Pharaoh's jockey is on his back compared to some of the other jockeys. I'm not sure if that is the goal but it looks awesome!
American Pharaoh seems to be the speed of speed. His confidence, patience, and dominance is impressive. It doesn't look like he'd be intimidated by any other horse down the stretch. I hope he romps in the Kentucky Derby!
+Tresa Lamb Go to Pedigree Online (Thoroughbred Database) and learn to look up pedigrees. You'll probably have to do some trial and error to learn your way around, but it is fun. In any case: Secretariat does not descend from Man o'War in even one line of descent. He does descend from Fair Play, Man o'War's sire, but not through Man o'War: the descent goes Fair Play - Display - Discovery - Miss Disco [fem] - Bold Ruler - Secretariat. And Secretariat is descended from Rock Sand, Man o'War's damsire, but not through Rock Sand's daughter Mahubah: the line goes Rock Sand - Tracery - Papyrus - Cosquilla [fem] - Princequillo - Somethingroyal [fem] - Secretariat. It's likely they have other lines in common further back, but those are the closest. Man o'War himself does not appear once in the pedigree. As heavily European as Somethingroyal's lines were, it would be unlikely Secretariat would be inbred to Man o'War. Secretariat was the product of the famous Nasrullah / Princequillo nick -- Nasrullah (and his sons, such as Bold Ruler) did unusually well on daughters and granddaughters of Princequillo. Secretariat and American Pharoah are great horses, but I don't think they run particularly alike, other than having long strides. Secretariat was a pounder, so much so Tweedy/Chenery was afraid he would break down. AP had a reputation for being floaty. And I don't think AP ever came from far back like Secretariat often did, though Secretariat had tactical speed, and would sometimes use it to run on or near the lead early. I would agree with Marilyn Shively, below: American Pharoah reminds me of Seattle Slew. Probably easier to rate, though; he didn't seem headstrong like Slew. Wish they had tried AP on turf . . . Turcotte thought Secretariat was better on grass than dirt.
+Kaitlyn Catania Damn prescient! Although this boy is Seattle Slew reincarnate. In fact, I fully believe Pharoah was better in his first two years than Slew by a minute amount.
Before this colts first race Baffert told his wife Jill that this was the best horse in his barn. After faltering that race Jill told him if that is the best horse than I guess it is going to be a long year! Well, this guy knows his stock because not only is it the best horse in his barn but it is the best horse he has ever trained and only really asked to run since that 1st race in the derby where he beat 18 horses while actually bouncing and not running his a race. Hopefully we get to see him run 3 more times!!
Maybe he's our next Man o' War. Ears foward, handride and perhaps a handride to the Roses of Kentucky. American Pharoah, thats no horse, thats a Pegasus that hides his millenium wings! He could be another fine Triple Crown winner
+Charles Ray I had not seen his Arkansas Derby until today-- what a beast- a monster - a legend. I love this horse and am sorry we won't see him race again. They don't make em like that too often
+Marilyn Shively They used to make 'em like that often enough. But, in the last 25 years or so, absolutely right. Only Point Given came close in the 3 year old boy ranks. There was Big Brown, Bernardini, maybe Barbaro, but only Pharoah, Point Given are 21st Century legends among three year olds, with Pharoah a legit top 10 three year old of all time IMO. I think one or two spots ahead of Seattle Slew. But they are nearly tied, as is most of the top 10-20.
i will never forget that day!!! i was there to see it, and i went into the infield part and snuck into Pharoah's post.. later finding out Zenyatta was also in that exact post (6) in the apple blossom!! (i took a picture of me in his post)
+Kim Dennis this was a big test for Pharoah because Baffert wanted him to rate in this race and he did and won big: I think that is when Baffert believed he had a horse who could win the Derby and maybe the crown
I would imagine Firing Line will run off like his Daddy did. I hope AP and Dortmund can spit the bit out and relax a bit. As far as who anyone beat, they all duck one another until the big dance. The problem is there will also be 12 or so horses that don't belong and in the way. Plus one has to be lucky enough to draw into a good post. Still remember Baffet's comments when LookinatLucky drew the 1. We're screwed.
+John Householder Nice call on Firing Line. He was my long odds pick. He ran his heart out against a freak, and I'm happy he's back jogging. That Preakness was terrifying. Also thinking Line of David could end up slipping up the ranks . . . Out of eh mares he's got some very, very nice horses. That are all better looking than him ;)
......and such a vision with that physical presence and those magnificent ears pricked forward. As much charisma as I've witnessed from a horse I've never seen ~ a Kentucky visit tops ye 'ol bucket list now.
So what does everybody think about American pro now now that he is won the Derby I still feel the same I don't know about you silver charm I really don't know about you Mr Jeff Jackson I think the Derby Gods for all the for allowing American Ferrell to bring it home in the Derby and the cash in my pocket was nice to great Derby see you in the Preakness
There's no question that American Pharoah looked dominant in the Arkansas Derby, but so did Dortmund in the Santa Anita Derby, and so did Carpe Diem in the Bluegrass Stakes, and so did Mubtaahij in the UAE Derby. I think there's probably at least a half-dozen horses capable of winning this year's Kentucky Derby on pure talent, but I've said time and time again over the years all of their Derby destiny's revolve around who gets the best post position draw at Churchill Downs and which horse is able to maintain the best track position throughout and impose his will on the others as the race unfolds. Bad post position draws have beaten more Derby favorites over the years than any live long shots ever have, IMO.
Btw? Before naming American Pharoah the 2015 triple crown winner? Many a good horse has had the trip from hell in The Kentucky Derby. Anything can and will happen when that gate opens in a 20 horse field!
+John Kaufmann True...anything could have happened. He could have stumbled coming out of the gate like War Emblem. I still think if that hadn't happened that horse would have broken the drought. But it did happen...and he didn't. No such bad luck for Pharoah though, and we do indeed have another Triple Crown winner.
Yo Tony dormant could not hold American Pharaohs jockstrap Triple Crown winner just might even break the track record for the Kentucky Derby how about that you heard it first year lmao :-)
Are you a fucking idiot? You realize this field was utter garbage right? American Pharoah is a awesome horse but bad fields like this make you look a lot better. It's going to be close between Dortmund and American Pharoah.
Didn't beat anything of note here, visually impressive but will find the Kentucky Derby a different race altogether with the giant Dortmund waiting to spoil his big day. Dortmund to beat Frosted with American pharoah 3rd in the KD -you heard it here first
Charles Ray Yes I was way off the mark, American Pharoah proved to be a real champion and deserves his triple crown glory ,not since a baby faced assassin named Stevie Cauthen got Affirmed home in all 3 races back in '78 has the crown been won, I didn't think he'd have the stamina to win the Belmont but he stayed longer than the mother in law and won in style
Thw field that American Pharoah beat in The Arkansas Derby was a bunch of Show Ponies & Mules! Lol. MR Z has been beaten by every 3yo and also ran this year, FAR RIGHT? Check his pedigree and u will see very little stamina influences. Keep in mind that the kentucky derby will be Pharoah's 3rd race in 7 weeks and this will be a very deep field this year.
Track was souped up. Gp take a look at the time of the oaklawn Handicap with a very mediocre older horse field. This horse is very nice, but he's no lock for the Derby and Dortmund has run just as fast as this one has.
ghostzapper2006 Yes, Dortmund has run this fast... while he's all out and American Pharoah is not even asked to move and geared down the final 16th. We haven't even begun to see what American Pharoah can do.
ghostzapper2006 Here are the comparative fractions, first for a 4yo grade2 with good older horses. The second a grade 1 with suspect horses. However both horses are right on the pace with American Pharaoh geared down at the finish. The thing I love about AP is his stride. He digs deep with every stride exuding power unseen by myself for the better part of 50 years. Don't be fooled, he can run when needed. The Rebel and the Arkansas Derby's have been a springboard for horses a few years back such as Bodemeister, Secret Circle, Will Take Charge, Curlin, Smarty Jones, etc. GL if you wager. Nice comment as I had doubts about this guy also but after spending the afternoon looking at him at 5/2 I'll take a shot with him. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22.77-45.99-1:10.54-1:35.94- 1:48.52 on the pace 3yo ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 23.18-46.71-1:10.51- 1:35.51- 1:47.93 on the pace 4yo

I'm not sold on AP. The announcer makes it sound like AP whipped everybody. He didn't. He beat a field of nobodies. I do like how he did it, rating off the speed, before pulling away, but sometimes these visually impressive wins are deceiving. He got a perfect trip, on a speed favouring strip, and no one else in that field could hold a candle in the wind. Just how good is he remains to be seen. I'd prefer him over Dortmund at this juncture, but am not sold on his chances to win the Kentucky Derby.
Silver Charm Again, watch his trip, and ask yourselves if this horse did anything truly extraordinary that day. The race call was totally over the top, out of proportion to the real events unfolding. What if the rider did put him to the whip, would he really have run any faster? No one knows. All hype so far. That is why, when you look at the race records of previous Kentucky Derbies, the 3 horses with the lowest odds often don't perform " as expected"….their odds were not justified. They were based on hype.
I come back and watch this every so often. I honestly knew when I watched this race that he was going to win the Triple Crown. I've watched plenty of horse racing in my day, and I've owned horses for 30 years. I know horses, and it was obvious from this race that this horse found running not just easy but also fun! I still watch American Pharoah's races- just watched the Arkansas Derby- he was breathtaking and he didbreathe different air! love this boy

I watch American Pharoah’s races all the time! My Favorite Horse EVER❤️
The way he comes out of turns is AMAZING.
Still my favorite call of any race ever - Track announcer Frank Mirahmadi and his Crew were (are) awesome.
Whoooo did this stretch call!?! They absolutely killed it! Seriously awesome job with the announcing.
Obviously AP's performance was seriously awesome, too. :)
+CEDeBaise Frank Mirahmadi
No words.. Absolutely breathtaking
"Breathing different kind of air".....absolutely!
AP for the TC calling it now!
I love watching all of his races- looking back in time- what a beast

+Marilyn Shively ---- Tho not AP, another race recap I think you might enjoy ~ check out 'California Chrome Turns to Gold' on U-Tube - would so luved to have had an AP race in this format......
And this my friends, is why I love AP.
Bob Baffert is going to have the top 2 favorites for the Derby.
That's why he won the triple crown
Just like his ancestor, Secretariat. He runs just like him. And, don't forget, Secretariat went back to Man 'O War 3xs. Incredible lineage!

The announcer made this race so exciting the way he call the race . He have not been asked the question but everyone knows the answer that was awesome
There's your 2015 Triple Crown winner.
+Kaitlyn Catania Damn prescient! Although this boy is Seattle Slew reincarnate. In fact, I fully believe Pharoah was better in his first two years than Slew by a minute amount.
Prelude to a Triple Crown! !!

Pharoah did not like the blinders
"That is one Special horse." And now we know just How special.
+Christopher Winkler we certainly do---
Great race by a great horse!

+cgarnet01 I do believe Barbaro had the goods to win the triple crown- of course we will never know---
I watch this every once in a while. I don’t care what anyone says AP is better than Justify
This colt is genuine
Love that horse! He is amazing.
Just...wow.
AP 2 TC.. American Pharoah to Triple Crown!
i will never forget that day!!! i was there to see it, and i went into the infield part and snuck into Pharoah's post.. later finding out Zenyatta was also in that exact post (6) in the apple blossom!! (i took a picture of me in his post)
horse looks physically beautiful too
Indeed......One Special Horse that turned 2015 into a Historic Year of Thoroughbred Racing!
+Kim Dennis this was a big test for Pharoah because Baffert wanted him to rate in this race and he did and won big: I think that is when Baffert believed he had a horse who could win the Derby and maybe the crown
Jerry Baily said that when he saw Pharoah rate in the Arkansas Derby and win so convincingly, he knew he was going to win the Derby
After this Race i bet 10000 on AP winning triple crown.
This race marks American Pharoah's G1 seasonal starting point
Awesome. Would like to see it run on the all-weather tracks including the Dubai World Cup meeting.
LOOKING GOOD KENTUCKY. GENEROUS WITH SIN UPGRADE TO FLAMING SWORD ALL DIRECTIONS.
arbor day THE BEST.
Yes!
Wasn't even whipped, at all.... awesome performance
never asked out of his morning lick speed...this bad ass could have won by the length of the stretch if extended...maybe, just maybe, this is the year

TIME TO GO, who's coming with me?... nobody lol
when i saw that i said....he can win the Triple Crown....instantly
Bob Baffert & Todd Pletcher will have the first 5 betting interests in The Kentucky Derby! Lol. Could be?
what are you doing here sara evans.
I would imagine Firing Line will run off like his Daddy did. I hope AP and Dortmund can spit the bit out and relax a bit. As far as who anyone beat, they all duck one another until the big dance. watched this race again- and yes, Pharoah was breathing different type of air: compare AP's Arkansas Derby with this year's version---
......and such a vision with that physical presence and those magnificent ears pricked forward. As much charisma as I've witnessed from a horse I've never seen ~ a Kentucky visit tops ye 'ol bucket list now.
+Kim Dennis he's on my bucket list too--

You two are both idiots, nothing in this field are among the better 3 year olds. You had one of the best 3yos in a terrible field.
He has, you just don't know what you are talking about.
Yo Tony dormant could not hold American Pharaohs jockstrap Triple Crown winner just might even break the track record for the Kentucky Derby how about that you heard it first year lmao :-)

Silver Charm I agree Silver Charm 😊 What an ott race call. This horse has talent , however....this was a work, really. Bring on the big guns!
Silver Charm You say he was in a field of nobodies but I would pick Far Right to beat American Pharaoh in the KY Derby.
Silver Charm I wouldn't say a field of nobodies.. We can't forget Mr. Z almost beat Dortmund
JRizz009 have Me. Z on the back burner also.
Could just be me but, I can't pick em like I used to for the Derby. I'm going with Dortmund.
