    Presenter: Mr Naeim Akbari
Host: A/Prof. Helen Davies BAgSci MAgSci BVM PhD
Topic: ‘Investigation of Equine Hoof Biomechanics Using Experiment, Finite Element and Machine Learning Methods'
In This Talk: Mr Akbari’s recent PhD study investigated the biomechanics of the equine hoof, including its morphology and deformation under physiological loading conditions. In this talk, Mr Akbari discusses how the study started with a technical comparison of advanced and conventional measurement methods to assess hoof morphology. In the next part, a hoof computational model was generated using finite element and machine learning methods to study: mechanical response of the hoof at different hydration levels; influence of an abnormal hoof conformation such as toe-in on the deformation responses of the hoof; and, failure of the laminar junction tissue within the hoof as occurs in chronic laminitis.
About the Presenter: Mr Naeim Akbari is a current PhD candidate (2022) with the Melbourne Veterinary School.
