  • The Deputy Prime Minister has hit out at Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves for comparing herself to the Iron Lady.
Reeves said in a speech last week that a Labour government would bring about major economic change, just like Thatcher did when she swept to power in 1979.
But Oliver Dowden has said Reeves will never measure up Thatcher...

Thatcher is a big part of the reason we have a free market which is the number 1 reason why or taxes are the only thing left to support the wages of people so that share holders get more and workers get less England is finished unless some great minds find a proper long therm plan. Definitely not a new Thatcher

@mum2jka I don't think you'll find many people arguing that all the pits should still be open. The biggest issue is the lack of contingency plan for all those who lost their jobs and the communities that were left to rot.
Comparable European nations don't really have coal mines anymore either. They would have shut eventually regardless of who was in power, Thatcher just accelerated the process. Other countries such as Germany however had a long-term strategy to close the collieries which to an extent mitigated the damage caused by their closure, meaning that their communities on the whole were not dessimated to the same extent.

If the Tories said 'All people called Angela are no longer allowed to wear shoes or wash themselves' Angela Epstein would be supporting that policy so passionately, like she does with ANY tory policy, no matter what it is. It's so blatantly obvious, that she is paid to do that, no matter what.

Idi Amin and Robert Mugabae had ideas, vision and plan Peter. These things are not the yardsticks we measure a good leader by.
Boris is another example. The tribalism is robbing people of their common sense.

Britain does not need another Thatcher. Britain did not need the first Thatcher. Unemployment rose from 1.5 million to 3 million between 1979 and 1981 and stayed there until 1986. Thatherism was a disaster.
