  • How to extend bike chain / Motorcycle chain replacement / chain customisation
To replace and extend a chain length, you will need the appropriate tools and a replacement chain. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to replace and extend a chain:
    1. Gather the necessary tools: You will need a chain tool (also known as a chain breaker), a replacement chain of the correct length, and a quick link or chain pin (depending on the type of chain you have).
    2. Determine the correct chain length: If you're extending the chain, measure the existing chain and determine how much longer you need it to be. If you're replacing the chain entirely, measure the old chain or consult the manufacturer's specifications to determine the correct length for your bike.
    3. Prepare the new chain: If you're replacing the entire chain, take the new chain out of its packaging and remove any excess links if necessary. If you're extending the chain, ensure you have the correct number of additional links to match the required length.
    4. Remove the old chain: Shift the gears to the smallest chainring and the smallest rear cog to relieve tension on the chain. Use the chain tool to push out one of the chain pins from the old chain, separating it and removing it from the bike.
    5. Size the new chain: Lay the old and new chains side by side, aligning the inner plates. Ensure that the new chain matches the length of the old chain or the desired length if you're extending it. If it's longer, remove any excess links using the chain tool.
    6. Install the new chain: Feed the new chain through the derailleur and around the smallest chainring and smallest rear cog. Use the chain tool to press in the chain pin or, if you have a quick link, install the quick link according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    7. Check the chain length: Shift through the gears to ensure the chain runs smoothly and doesn't excessively sag or bind in any gear combination. If needed, make slight adjustments to the chain length by removing or adding links.
    8. Lubricate the chain: Apply lubricant to the chain and spin the pedals backward to distribute the lubricant evenly across the chain.
    9. Test ride: Take your bike for a short test ride to ensure that the chain functions properly and smoothly in various gears. If you notice any issues, such as skipping or noise, make further adjustments as necessary.

Are there any negative effects if your chain is too long? I’m just changing mine and it appears to be much longer than the calculated length for my bike -I’ve used two on line calculators for the new one and both have the same result so I assume they’re correct. I had always suspected my chain was too slack but it did work and rode ok, so I’m questioning what the effects of a ‘too-long’ chain are, if any?!?!
