However, the fact that it could represent Taiwan does not mean that it has sovereign rights over Taiwan.

this is what the chinese government does to its people, they brainwash them into believing that taiwan is only a province of their own country. i can see why chinese people would have thought it was wrong bc that’s just what they were taught by their government, similarly to how taiwanese people are taught that taiwan is independent. it’s a matter of the government issues, and taiwan and china are a very sensitive topic. i wouldn’t necessarily blame the chinese people for thinking it’s wrong, but they shouldn’t have sent her hate knowing she was only 17 and was only doing what she was taught from a young age.

I think if you're a Korean band that wants to break the mainland Chinese Market, at least do some homework and not screw up such a sensitive topic. It is not about age or whether you are famous or not. Taiwan issue is still a problem for both Chinese people and Taiwan people. She was basically forced into doing this. The Chinese Government gave her two choices: either give them an apology for waving a Taiwanese flag and spoke Taiwanese, which the Chinese Government claimed was a separatist movement or lose all her Chinese customers. Theres a difference,
First of all, Taiwan is a republic of China, And Taiwan and China's Ethnicity are the same. So when you say "Chinese" This could mean, People from Mainland china, Taiwan, Hongkong, and Macau.
Those are countries that are under China. Taiwanese is a term to individualize Taiwanese people from people of Mainland China.
Its just like in Philippines or Korea, When you say Filipinos, This could mean Ilocanos, Bicolano, Cebuano, etc. Even though they have different cultures, they are still considered Filipinos since they are under the Philippines as a whole and their Ethnicity is Filipino.
And for Korea, When you say "Korea" This could mean both North and South Korea, We say "North Koreans" and "South Koreans" to individualize two nationalities of the same ethnicity.
China as a whole - Mainland China, Taiwan, Hongkong, Macau
Philippines as a whole - Ilocos, Cebu, Etc.

She was basically forced into doing this. The Chinese Government gave her two choices: either give them an apology for waving a Taiwanese flag and spoke Taiwanese, which the Chinese Government claimed was a separatist movement or lose all her Chinese customers. It's so unfair that she can't voice her own opinions. Also, the Chinese Government didn't even have any hard evidence that Tzuyu was a separatist, and simply claimed so.
