you're a legend for keeping it real and not kowtowing about the conspiracy narrative, it is hard when there is so much pressure. I worked at a school and never wore the mask, and didn't preach but when the topic came up I for damn sure didn't hold back my thoughts; a damn crime against humanity experimenting on children. You were one of the only good parts of the wsl, a real highlight, and they have quickly turned into a dumpster fire. Maybe can do your own play by play? Id tune in

I’m stoked to have found BL and PK groveling in my algorithm this am. You guys are providing a much needed mature and transparent perspective on professional surfing, the WSL and general lifestyle. It’s frustrating as a surfer and surf fan to watch contest formats deteriorate and have no idea why. Hey Barton there is no such thing as "non-political" and you are a big boy and surely smart and grown-up enough to know that. We are all political beings and we are all non-neutral beings even when we choose to stay away from politics -- doing that is a political move in itself. So please give me something better than "WSL should be non-political", that's impossible mate and you are smart enough to know it.
Welcome to your opinion but still dont agree that a governing body should have a say in whether an athlete should be honoured or not and perhaps thats idealistic but worth holding onto I say, a fair and even playing field of respect and opportunity for all.

To understand the impact of an idea we need to take it to the extreme to get its potential and then work backwards, what if all the major male athletes chose to surf the womens tour as well what would happen on those womens rankings do you think? So I kinda see it that Bethany understands whats at risk, and its a big deal if you are a female and its something they have built over decades and developed through a passionate life long commitment to build something for future generations of females to prosper from so I say give the Trans athletes their own division, their own space and time included in the sport but leave the integrity of those original two genders without the influence of science to decide things, Male, female, Trans seems the perfect way for me. Respect mate, thanks.

The World Surf League need to take a very long hard look at themseves for a few reasons... Barton covered one topic but the actual format and cut off nonsense mid year and the utter stupidity of a final 5 at Trestles... Seriously change it back or lose respect forever by many a surfer and fellow humans...

Yes good question and im not to sure how much influence they have but they sponsor a lot of the top pros so definitely have influence.

Call the format SCRAMBLE, top 27 plus a few wild cards. Only possible with short period wedged sort of wind chop spread out beach break. You are welcome WSL lol. I want 5% commissions on the idea. Origination right here on term SCRAMBLE for WSL. Expression Session was lame, I have a few other ideas, obvious team stuff, but also friendly non-violent gladiator surfing lol. Safety first, but the development of high low cross over fast intersecting then safe crossing high and low on the face ending in 2 big moves in same filming frame like we see at local beach breaks on good days w good surfers crossing on end sections etc.
Yeah a cross over wave sharing event would be amazing, love sharing and drawing lines with a mate.

Wow, BL, I always thought you were on the woke side a bit, but dude, you nailed it. And I was wrong about you, you were just figuring things out. And yes the Bethany supporters are the silent kind hearted majority but WSL went full Disney woke employee union. Disney lost its special governance and special treatment over the “Forced Gay Bill”. We love gay ppl here in Florida, but don’t force gay and trans at us. And BL I see you as loving and accepting maybe even left leaning but super smart and kind. Always welcome in my world BL. WSL now have a revolving door of commentators. It's a weird model but that's how they choose to operate. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Yes mate I am good with not commentating and respect their rights to choose and do what they want in that area, no stress from me.
I always liked your commentary Barton and I'm disappointed to see the route you're taking at the moment. There are always going to be (as there should be) limits on speech when it comes to a body like the WSL and you well know that - should they accept a surfer making racist comments in the name of 'diversity of opinion'? How about misogynistic comments about the women on tour? You and Peter talk a big game about having been 'outcasts' and surfing constituting a welcoming community. First of all, that's not true at all. Look at the history of black surfers in California for instance. They were marginalised and excluded for decades, often violently. Second, it's amazing that you can't both see how trans people are the 'outcasts' in this case. They are being excluded from communities everywhere, including surfing. Bethany's comments were bigoted and unacceptable, they were not 'kind' at all. You need to take a long hard look at yourself and think about whether you truly want surfing to be welcoming and celebrate diversity or not. I hope for your sake that you are able to find the empathy within you to change your perspective.
Just have a Trans division and give those people their own space and time, thats what I support. I have absolute respect for peoples individuality and their rights to live as they want and never had anything but positive interactions. My youngest brother Trent is gay so I have spent my life around that community and so have respect from both sides if you know what I mean.
You have seen the results of the other sports right where this has already been trailed and lets be clear we are talking about biological males going into womens sport, I dont know of any moves the other way, females going into male sport but the other option I suppose is no gender in the sport and just an opens for all, but we have watched the growth of womens surfing over the last decades with lots of stoke for them all round so good to hear what women think as well, they are most affected.

@@barton_lynch Hey Barton, i think this angle is much more positive- how do we find a place for diverse groups given the evolving ideas about gender. I think the diversity of opinion angle can be accused of simply reinforcing the structures that failed to include different groups in the past. It is simply too easy to strawman the "woke" and pc crowds without at least acknowledging what gains have been made by the insistence that improvement is necessary. There is the risk of going the other way, and letting the most exclusionary minds take control in which case surfing maybe isn't a space I'd continue to be interested in.
