For the last equation a4 + a2 -20=0 Just let a2 to any letter ( ie a2=m ) Therefore ; m2 + m -20=0 Then much easier to workout Then relate m back to a2 and get the value of a Q•E•D

For finding the term independent of x, how then do you find the x values that will eventually cancel out when the power the expansion is raised to is an odd number? I got a question and I couldn't figure it out

he got (a^2-5)(a^2+4) for a couple reasons. 1) (a^2-5)(a^2+4)=a^4+a^2-20 2)a^2 multiplied by a^2 = a^4 3) -5 multiplied by 4 equals -20 What he did was factor like you would any quadratic equation. It may be a little confusing because of the a^4 but it factors the same as an equation that has a^2
for question 2ii) on the worksheet, why isn't it (3/x^2) x 6C3... ? cuz it's the name ncr thing from the previous question so why would it become 6c2(a)^4(b)2? thanksss
Ummm for the question you did on 11:46, I think you have made a mistake. It should have been that 7C1*2^6*a=7C2*2^5*a^2, in which the two poles are the coefficients of x and x^2, which gives a=2/3.
