I know you’re use to it but from my days with the power company, opening those breaker panel lids usually results in a hand full of wasps.

They still make the over under units they are custom order units from American standard and trane

I remember seeing a whole bunch of them, back when i lived in phoenix. Residential roof installs are more common out there, which over under flow units are perfect for.

We had the same problem on a similar unit, turned out to be the crankcase heater wires broken and shorting intermittently

The outside breaker box is a code violation. The empty space where there is no breaker needs to be closed off so that someone can't stick their finger through and touch the live back plane.

Did you watch the unit cycle and turn back on again? See if the issue re-occurred?

Most people Don’t realize that Breakers go Bad just like any other piece of Electrical Equipment. I had a Breaker Melting in a 200-amp Box. It was H-O-T.

Many things can cause short-cycling. If discharge from the condenser fan goes right back into the unit; intermittent condenser fan motor. I've seen a few...!

    • @davidb2438
      @davidb2438 Год назад +3

It could just be a float switch turning it off and do to a partially clogged condensate pipe, or not a proper p trap

Could be the thermostat, a motor or compressor going out on overload. Call Curtis.

No matter what, even with the addition of that start cap, that compressor does not have long gor this world. Just listen to the internal noise at start-up. Keep up the great work

I worked a unit 480-volt three-phase it would blow the hundred amp breaker now is it did my math the solve this problem two other breakers 40 the heat compressor and the two fans. As I asked worth the heat mode on answer no so I started look at the wiring then one strange thing occurred wires coming from the main breaker wires going to the other fuse panels in the unit well it looks like a lightning strike got the bakelite unit all the words were tied into turned into his type of carbon so basically I have some connectors from another unit tied two wires together taped them up real good and the problem. They were going to replace 10 to $15,000 unit and that was not including the cost to rent a crane hoisted on the roof.

Yep, my 1999 Trane XL1800 Dual Compressor 5 ton / 2.5 ton actually came from the Trane Factory with an OEM Hard Start Kit in it similar to the one you installed. Had to replace the Hard Start Cap a couple of times over the years (it caused the breaker to pop when the big compressor tried to start), and I'll be replacing the Hard Start Potential Relay this week just because the OEM Original is getting really old and I don't want it to crap out in the middle of the summer here in Central Florida. I'm kind of surprised that his Trane / American Standard unit actually didn't have an OEM Hard Start Kit in it from Trane. Oh well, great job as always. Hope that fixes his problem. I know my breaker would trip if the big compressor would try to start and the big hard start cap was bad or weak. I also discovered the Trane installer only installed a 40 Amp Breaker for my outside unit!! Its clearly stated on the outside units information plate that the Min/Max Breaker should be 60 Amp. So I recently replaced the old 40 Amp they installed with a 60 Amp. I checked the wire from the breaker to the disconnect box and it's actually #6 gauge wire. Also #6 gauge wire coming into the unit through the whip connecting to #10 Gauge wires inside the unit, so we should be good for a while.

    Same thing!
When you got to add a boost or hard start, it's a "TIME THING" at that point...
Crap shoot really on how long it will last after that...

I've had loose connections at the compressor that gave me trouble, only found out after it cooked the un-fused disconnect and one terminal, fortunately it left enough to put a quick terminal repair kit on its been 5 years or more no trouble.
    Thanks again for the videos!😐🍺🍺🍺🥃🥃🇺🇲

Is it too late for a soft start kit to be installed on the system? Is the compressor too far gone now? Or is a hard start kit the only real option?

    • @bobboscarato1313

If unit is 15 years old just use hard-start kit until it quits for good; then get new unit.

Nice job, those hard start caps may keep it going a long time. I used them quite a bit. I had one on a 24000 btu window unit for years. I think back at all the things I did to that unit to keep it going, it was actually amazing.

I understand the concept of how a capacitor helps overcome the initial inertia of starting a motor, but didn’t the breaker trip after it was already running? I’m just a homeowner w a new mini split that will hopefully not need repair for the next warranted 12 years, I just have been watching you a long time and like to understand more. I watched an Electrician U video where they explained how our concept of capacitors isn’t really correct, and showed how one actually works, pretty fascinating stuff..
