      +Dave Sparks Ha! I've lived in Escondido for the last 15 years. Used to live on Juniper St. just south of Washington, I know right where you are talking about. Crazy thinking that used to be where the Chargers pre-season training facility was. If they were still there I would probably go watch them now.

    Now THIS is football !
    The 1960's Chargers were loaded with talent and they appeared in 5 of the first 6 AFL Championship games, winning it all in 1963. Coach Gillman was nothing short of a genius in the passing game and with Hadl and Alworth being an incredibly potent QB / WR combo (as well as all the other fine recievers) it amazing that they didn't win more championships. Always great to see 1960's American Football League color footage. Fantastic Post !

      Folks that believe they were better than a great defensive group in CHITOWN under GEORGE ALLEN, or the GB PACK OR the JIMMY BROWN CLEVES.. are kidding themselves.

      Williamson was less than a journeyman in the NFL before his AFL days.
      Gonsoulin had a big picks season in the early days of the weaker era of the AFL, and was out of the league in just a few years.
      Sample had one big season himself in the NFL and then was average thereafter. He was good in the stronger days of the AFL, but quit before the 1970’s NFL era..PAULSON never was good in his very brief days in the NFL. Finally, only W. BROWN was truly great in both the AFL& post-‘69 AFC/NFL years.

    To this day Bill Walsh is often given sole credit for having created the "West Coast Offense." Although Walsh does indeed deserve a lot of credit for the contributions he made to the evolution of the passing game, the fact remains he was standing on the shoulders of two offensive maestros who aren't mentioned nearly enough when discussing the West Coast Offense -- Sid Gillman and Paul Brown.

    The Chargers had a cutting edge look to them. From their glorious uniforms to their high flying offense. The great coaching of Sid Gillman was another ironic twist. As a Jew, Gillman faced perpetual prejudice as a coach. After leaving the great Los Angeles Rams teams of the Fifties, he finally landed with the Chargers in the AFL. Combined with Al Davis, the two geniuses catapulted the Chargers to the top. The NFLs prejudice gave the AFL a decisive edge. In talent and in coaching.

    The Chargers do not belong in Los Angeles. They played their maiden season there in 1960 and drew flies in the Memorial
    Coliseum. About the only people there were the players families.
    Hoteliers Barron and Conrad Hilton decided to move the franchise
    to San Diego; they did not want to compete with the NFL's Rams for
    attention. The Chargers had a very successful run in San Diego for 56 seasons (1961-2016).

Also, wasn't '66 the last year of the red/white striped AFL official's gear? Looked great in the '90s throwback games between ex-AFL teams...where they even used the old Spalding J5V AFL football!

      Having been to a few games at Qualcomm I would say one big problem is there are no good seats. It is due to it being designed as a multi-sport stadium. Row 20 of the lower level on the 50 yard line should be the best seat in the house, but it is a long way from the field. Compare it to seats on the 50 yard line at UNLV for the Las Vegas Bowl for example, and Qualcomm stadium sucks for watching football in comparison. I don't know why it has to take a billion $ to fix it, though.

      ***** Simple: inflation, labor costs, contracting bids and bear in mind that unlike the 60s and 70s major food chains like Dairy Queen and Carl's Jr. have an interest in selling food at venues. Also Uncle Sam and Sacramento get their pieces of the pie too. Keep in mind the Chargers have to make money off turnstile revenues. Welcome to the world of the big business of professional sports.

    in the beginning of the video, the narrator states that the Bills beat the Chargers in the previous championship game, and the Chargers were "anxious to settle the score today." this is a thought that is expressed quite often when teams that faced each other in a previous year's playoff or championship game. I always think, how in the world can a win in a regular season game "settle the score" for a playoff and especially for a championship game loss? i'm sure the Chargers winning the first game of the season felt just as great as the Bills felt when they won the final game of the previous season.

    • @steveswangler6373
      @steveswangler6373 6 лет назад +1

      also, how were the Chargers the most successful afl team up to this point? perhaps more regular season wins, but the Oilers and Bills had both won 2 championships, and all four of those championships came at the expense of the chargers. who was more successful in the 70's? the Steelers 4 super bowl championships or the cowboys 5 super bowl appearances? how about the early 90's Bills or Cowboys? the team that wins championships.

    Not lots of info on their defense, but they won titles on a consistent bssis, did they not?

      @mitchellmelkin4078 5 месяцев назад +1

      @tommythomason6187, Their long and gradual decline from the AFL/AFC West's upper echelon mainly owed to poor personnel and drafting decisions, primarily on the defensive side of the field.
      In '66, the Chargers' drop from title contention can be attributed to a disastrous rush defense which went from first in the League to the worst in every meaningful metric. They couldn't get off the field as opponents increasingly ran roughshod over them as the season progressed, leading to winning only 3 times in their last 10 games, despite still having a pretty potent offense.
      The team was a non-factor in the divisional race after late season collapses in both '67 and '68 until the Coryell era really moved into high gear a decade later.
