The tokens did a performance of this when they were in their seventies or something - - and it's so good - - they still had it!! The song was written originally by African songwriter Solomon Linda. Linda's original was written in isiZulu, while the English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss. The original title was: Mbube. Hope that helps.
Yes it's as good or maybe even better than their youth! how mind blowing is that!
In addition, Solomon Linda was paid many years after this song came out, but finally was given royalties for this. The Tokens sang some great songs after this great song.
YES - it was amazing that the man sang the same..
Isn't it a lullaby in Zulu?
The band video wasn't the best quality but I love that song, thanks for sharing!
"The Lion Sleeps Tonight" is a song originally written and recorded by Solomon Linda under the title "Mbube" for the South African Gallo Record Company in 1939. Linda's original was written in isiZulu, while the English version's lyrics were written by George David Weiss.
This song was played at my high school ‘sock-hops’ in the gym. 64-66 ish
50 years later he was still able to sing this song live and hit those notes.
You are so right! I saw the live video. Hard to believe Jay can still hit those notes.
The Tokens, from my hometown, Brooklyn NY. Fun fact: Neil Sedaka, a great and under appreciated singer/songwriter was a early member of this group.
everything good comes from Brooklyn!
Hey Chod, The Tokens were not the originators of this song, but they were the ones who took this song to another "stratosphere" and made it the hit that is, as it is still being remembered & played today in 2022!!!
In the studio, they do their magic. There is a lady singing and other instruments for sure.
Yes, this is obviously lip synched for a TV show.
I don't know, they did it live a few years ago and it was perfect.
The floating voice in the background is Anita Darian.
Thank you. She deserves recognition. Crazy talented.
Yes. And saying she’s “screaming in the background” is a bit insulting to me 😅
Anita Darian , the female singing all the background vocals, was a colotura soprano. The colotura soprano has an astonishing range to her voice.
I swear I thought someone was playing a saw 😂😂😂😂.
The Tokens made this famous 60 years ago. Lead singer Jay Siegel has a great voice and the background singer is a woman. There are videos with all of them singing. Just a great classic song
How could anyone just sit there, unmoved by that beat?
No I can’t! I’m bopping away in my chair! Lol!
If this song does not make you smile, you are too far gone.
Not to me, i know the backstory...the Linda family against disney for years..
@@alfioplays7443 Don't let them sreal your joy.
This is one of those tunes that when it comes on you “can’t” turn it off.
So true!!!!
Another hit by The Tokens is "Tonight I Fell In Love". It has a bit of the Doo Wop sound, which always sounds great.
BRILLIANT
There is something special about being in the presence of a live performance where all the performers just totally nail it, it's almost like a spark of the divine, perhaps that's why we are drawn to it..
The music you’re hearing is not live. It is the studio recording. That’s why you don’t see the woman singing the high parts. They’re either lip synching or someone edited in the studio recording over this video.
This is a great old song and classic
Look up the video on RUclips of them singing this song when they were in their sixties. They sounded the same
It's OK! I am 72 years old and when this song was popular I thought they were all black as well! Back then we only had a juke box with no pictures of the performers. IT WAS GREAT! No racism in music! Also, I had. no idea that Charlie Pride was a black dude! He sounded like every other other Country dude to me! That was good enough!
The back story I heard was this was a Zulu song that was recorded by a local African group. The song made its way to NY were it was recorded and made millions for certain people. But the original Zulu singer and heirs only received about $1,000 because it was classified as an “African folk song”.
Classic 60's, also in Lion King
What an outstanding, beautiful song.
Waited up to hear the New Year's Eve Top 10, age 11. With 13 yr old brother. And durn near Midnight, here came the Tokens. Magical! Yeah! Cannot help but smile! Great reaction! Thanks!!
They are still doing concerts.
The Tokens did this song originally from the year 1961 the year I was Born. They are Lip singing because those are Background singers singing the High pitch vocal part from the Record.
Chod/Dee, their "Tonight I Fell In Love" was another hit, all 1:45 of it! Jay Siegel with the amazing vocals on "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"!
Another hugely popular novelty song from back when.
You need to remember this was American Bandstand. On the show groups always lip sync so most of the time you won't get the entire ensemble appear on the show. I am sure a female soprano was hired for the recording, not to mention the saxophone.
The woman is beyond singing falsetto; she is singing operatic notes..
Loved it in the 60s when I grew up as a teen
America's songwriter/humorist, Roy Zimmerman created a parody of this song called "The Liar Tweets Tonight" with a chorus that goes "Vote him away, vote him away..." Anyway, it was so popular that he wound up doing several more versions, each with different cameo appearances by music and comedy legends.
They were at a doowoop show recently and they still sound like this.
I just watched a video of them now singing this. They sound exactly the same!!
The Tokens released this in 1961 but they are not the first. There is a history to this song that I believes goes back to Africa.
There is another - much later - version of The Tokens doing this same song. I dont want to paste the link, because I'm not sure if I'm allowed to... but if you search for 'The Lion Sleeps Tonight.mp3' you'll find it.
The 'back up' soprano singer in that perfrormance is named Kelly Defade. Excellent ! 🔥
Lip Gloss! Nice touch!!
They do a stage performance when much older where you can see the woman doing her bit and they all sound just as good, well worth seeing.
There’s a live video of them in their 70’s singing this and sounding just as good!
You are watching a 1960's television version of a song. Almost no one sang "live" on a television show at the time. They would play the "record" that was popular and the band would lip-sync to it. That is why you hear the woman in the background with no woman on the stage. It is common to hear all the studio perfection and then look at the performance and not see the horns or orchestra. That being said, it was the Tokens who did the studio, and this version of the song.
Always reminded me of ducks. "My wings are wet, my wings are wet, my wings are wet".
That said, I worked in an adult day treatment center for people severely debilitated with schizophrenia and other psychotic, mood, personality, and thought disorders. I was 12, 13 when this song came out, and have always loved it. One day a local high school choir came over and sang a few tunes for us at lunch time. They closed with The Lion Sleeps Tonight. It. Was. Beautiful. Not a dry eye in the house. Even those most distracted by voices and hallucinations and paranoia were attentive for a few moments in that day. Magical song from all these lovely young voices.
I have heard other artists sing this but the Tokens sang the original version.
Thye usually have th elady singing in the back ground in the videos too. After the first lady dies they had another that sang as well
Are they miming in this video? I'm sure I've seen another video of a 'live' performance with a different lead singer and you could see a woman singing the highest part. There's no obvious singer of the highest part you can see in this video. It might have been The Tokens I saw before, because they may have had different members over time.
Great campfire song,,,,,🔥🔥🔥👍😎
Watch the more recent video of them singing this and hear how they have not changed even though most are in there 70's now , the singer is in h i s 80's , watch it 👍
The 1st time we heard something that wasn't a Jazz pattern or a straight 4/4...🥁
I dare anyone to try not to smile when you hear this song.
Gene Krupa Sing, Sing, Sing, Ed Sullivan show live. Best drummer ever my friend. Thank you & God bless you an your family.
This song was originally recorded by South African singer Solomon Linda under the Zulu name for "lion" which was "Mbube.". It was recorded in 1951 by folk singer Pete Seeger with a group call the Weavers under the title "Wimoweh" which was a mis-hearing of the Zulu "Uyimbube" of the original. The Platters made this version in 1961. The history of this song is quite interesting... you can check it on Wikipedia.
The Tokens - The Lion Sleeps Tonight.mp3 - This is the Tokens when they were in their 70's
❤❤❤❤❤
The soprano in the background was added by producer extraordinaire Phil Spector.
Yes, this was the original. The Tokens had many hits.
This is a beautiful sing about fear. Freedom from fear on those nights when the lions didn’t eat a villager. The fear is how old? Ten million years? Pre-human apes were killed by lions, as are fewer people today. It’s a song of life and death.
Yes, before this song was used in movies it was a hit on the radio 📻
The lead singers grandson told his class his grandpa sang the song from Lion King and he had to go to school and sing for the whole crowd.
I wish they showed the soprano singing. There's a video of them singing this many years later and you do get a glimpse of her there.
Yeah, we get it. You didn't realize The Tokens were white.
Great reaction guys. But yeah I did read that the original African singer song writer got basically nothing for the copy write to his song?
I suggest reading the entire Wikipedia page about it, because it pretty much sucks that the song was performed by one artist who got it from another, and was recorded and re-recorded, and the original artist who wrote and performed the song (Solomon Linda) never really did receive the attention outside of Africa or the money that this song consequently received, while other people got the accolades and the money. I mean, yes now he is credited, but at the time, not so much. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_Sleeps_Tonight And if you want to hear the original version, you can hear it on RUclips if you click here: ruclips.net/video/mrrQT4WkbNE/видео.html
They were the greatest and made it Famous ! Others not very good !
WE were pretty cool in 61! Believe it or not!
Check the history of the song, it was done in native African by a famous African singer/band before these guys sampled or ......
Here's an amazing version by Ladysmith Black Mambazo: "Ladysmith Black Mambazo/Mint Juleps "The Lion Sleeps Tonight""
❤️❤️
So amazing.
During the late 1950's this was sung as a folk song, notably by Pete Seeger in his concerts w/ audience participation.
One of the very best songs I've ever heard.
There are so many different versions of this song too :)
The Tokens version is the best known version and the best.
I think The Tokens released this first . Back in the day these TV shows were all Lip Synced . The horns and backup singers weren't even there.
transcendental
Will always be the song that reminds me of of Fall 1987.. #5 PSU came to carrier dame and Syracuse 🍊.. took em apart.. The Lion Sleeps Tonight 💪🏻🍊
Now you can go on vacation to Walt Disney World and see "The Festival of the Lion King" at Animal Kingdom (and lots of other fun stuff).
What?! There's no one screaming in the back. That is a woman that sings with the group, who is hitting operatic notes! And Dee, you don't think "white people can sing like this? Seriously?! Why not? You really need to be more open-minded. This is the original group that made a hit with this song, decades before the Lion King was even thought of. They still sound just as good as they did 50 years ago! They weren't just one-hit wonders either. If you want to know the history, It's all in a documentary on Netflix called "The Lion's Share." You can also find other videos on RUclips that show them live (closer in time to today) and you can see the woman who sings with them.
I bet you'd love Ladysmith Black Mambazo, a male choral singing group from South Africa. Their music is really something. Also Fela Kuti. He's fantastic. Try his song "Lady."
I just saw them on TV in a tribute to Paul Simon.
The Lion King!!!
This is an old one. The 60's I think.
check out their latest version. They still have it.
This was recorded before auto tune or reverb it was just straight up recorded
50 years later....
You should checkout The Good, the Bad and the Ugly - The Danish National Symphony Orchestra (Live) You can find it on RUclips
The original version was from a man in Africa with a band in 1939. He finally got some recognition near about 2000.
You know, I heard the woman, but first thing that came to my mind was a musical saw. It can sound like a woman. So I’m curious now. Look up musical saw and you will see what I mean.
you should listen to Put a candle in the window by CCR
You need to check out the latest version. A live performance 2014? but the female backup, Kelley DeFade stole the show.
A link to the original that has been referred to in other comments here:
ruclips.net/video/mrrQT4WkbNE/видео.html
Don't know who the first person was, but whomever it was, I was 4 or 5 years old when I first heard this song and I'm 64 years old, so do the math, never mind, I'll do the math for you, 1962 or 1963 when it first came out.
The Tokens are the original singers
You need to watch the video when their older live sound the same
This one surprised you guys. You actually stopped the song!
Let's go Home
If you want a song that really showcases how percusion can really drive a song, I strongly suggest giving Gloria Estefan's album Unwrapped a listen. In particular the song Te Amare.
Good doesn't take a long time to discover the origins of this song by a black in South Africa taken and recorded for the financial benefit of the wild West
Here's the original from which this song was created, "Mbube (1939)," by Solomon Linda: ruclips.net/video/mrrQT4WkbNE/видео.html
thiz iz the bezt, mozt popul🅰r verzion / recording of thiz zong.. other verzionz zuck in comp🅰rizon ... 1961
you should play the original from the S. African author of the song so that way the people who stole it don't make money as the writer died penniless w/out even a gravestone...
do the live version
Not saying anything bad (in a way it's a good comment) but... Welcome to an earworm you will carry with you the rest of your life. You'll just be out minding your own business and the darn weem-a-way chant will start in your head.
That is not screaming in the background it sounds like a saw which they bent and used a bow to get those sounds also it looks effortless because it was lip sync on the video
make the band/singer box bigger.....
This is a lip-synched performance; they're getting nusic from people and instruments that they don't have with them, and it's totally identical to the studio version.
ruclips.net/video/iUW3-dzmRZc/видео.html The high soprano singer was also on the original Star Trek theme song.
Please watch eva Cassidy sind Over the rainbow, The video received 22 MILLION views????
