  • The future of veterinary medicine lies in specialization, with technology as a great ally, and by increasing collaboration with other specialties with a One Health approach. This has been pointed out by Juan Carlos Castillejo, veterinarian, biologist and one of the great personalities of the veterinary industry in the last four decades, in the 'Con V de Vet' program.
For the current general director of MSD Animal Health in Spain and Portugal, "the great challenge is the specialization of veterinarians in areas where we are not yet, staying where we are already recognized". It refers to fields such as research, animal welfare, sustainability or food safety. The future is for the veterinarian to acquire a "broad" and "solid" base, "but adapted to the needs of society," he said.
For Castillejo, the veterinarian now has a new ally: "We have to be able to incorporate technology into our work instruments, because it will help us predict, even before preventing or curing" diseases. He believes the technology offers veterinarians "tremendous" tools. "We are seeing the tip of the iceberg especially in the collection and analysis of data and in its interpretation related to health," he said.
