- As always, listen to both recordings then share your thoughts in the comments section.
"Ain't That Peculiar" is a 1965 song recorded by American soul musician Marvin Gaye for the Tamla (Motown) label.
The single was produced by Smokey Robinson, and written by Robinson, and fellow Miracles members Bobby Rogers, Pete Moore, and Marv Tarplin. "Ain't That Peculiar" features Gaye, with the Andantes on backing vocals, singing about the torment of a painful relationship.
Billboard said that "penetrating hard-drive dance beat backs another soulful, first-rate Gaye performance." Cash Box described it as a "rollicking, rhythmic pop-blues romantic handclapper about a love-struck fella who can't get along without his gal." Record World said that "The Detroit beat gets going in high speed on this marvy Gaye slice."
Chart success
The single was Gaye's second U.S. million seller successfully duplicating its predecessor "I'll Be Doggone", from earlier in 1965 by topping Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart in the fall of 1965, peaking at number 8 on the Billboard Hot 100.[4] It became one of Gaye's signature 1960s recordings, and was his best-known solo hit before 1968's "I Heard It Through the GrapevineWikipedia

You Have to come Correct when your dealing with a Legend. Marvin Gaye all Day Everyday ✊🏽💜⚫️💯
Marvin Gaye hands down
Marvin locked in with the groove on this record. I like that he didn’t feel rushed to deliver.
Marvelous Marvin Gaye there's NO comparison!!!
Marvellous Marvin. That’s all folks!
Marvin Gaye makes me want to throw my hands up! 👑🎤🔊⚓✔️
and sing the star spangle banner
Chocolate Genius switched it up SOOO much that I’m not sure if we can really compare the 2 versions. If I weren’t actively listening I would swear that they’re 2 different songs. Props for CB for putting his own spin on it but I’m in the Gaye camp on this one
It's amazing how tempo can completely change a song. I would never had noticed they were the same song! I'll have to go with Mr. Gaye on this one.
Good morn 🙋🏽♀️

MARVIN GAYE 💯💯🖐🏽 DOWN. DAMN MARVIN IS THE GREATEST 💞🥰
Marvin Gaye the best
First time hearing this jazzy one..I guess I'm used to the faster beat. It doesn't make me sad listening to it. Marvin Gaye ♥
It's bluesy 🔵, and yes. MG all day.
I didn't realize how sad the song was until I jeard Chocolate Genius' version. I really like it when someone surprises me and helps me see something new. So thanks to him! But I love Marvin Gaye! The two versions are so different, I can't compare them. 🤭☺️
Marvin Gaye the original no one can touch him
Marvin Gaye, HANDS DOWN, PERIOD. There has been a select FEW who could bring it lyrically & vocally. Here, Marvin wins, no question.
Right.
Chocolate Genius put his own spin on the record. For lack of better words, he put a “I can hardly make it because of the way you hurt me” tone on the record. He delivered his personal interpretation of the record in a way that compliments the arrangement. He didn’t over or under deliver.
I THINK HE'S ASLEEP 💤💤💤
😴 NEVER HAVE I EVER HEARD A SONG SUNG IN SLOOOOOW MOTION🎶🎶😴😴
😂
Marvin Gaye-100% 😌🎶
Marvin is perfect❤, but I can get with Chocolate on his version.
Marvin!
My mother would throw a fit knowing someone else tried to out do her baby Marvin 😂😂😂
I'm having a fit NOW! I'm like BOOOO!!! 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅😂😂😂
Lol 😭
Totally Marvin Gaye...............
Are you kidding me? this is a 'no brainer. MARVIN GOT THIS!!!'
Both artist put their own twist on the song but Marvin Gaye is ultimate crooner. I am a 1957 baby and all my mother listened to on the stereo was Motown ,saying that I am a Devoted Marvin Gaye fan for life. Chocolate genius is a good singer and does have a nice style
Marvelous Marvin
Marvin Gaye version hands down
Sorry I've loved Marvin Gaye for 60 years...I can't change now.❤❤ The 2nd one was so slow it got on my NERVES.
Who in heavens name has the ovarian audacity to compare this person to The Greatest soul singer in the history of music MARVIN GAYE?
Both on a high leven of perfection❤❤❤❤❤
I had to give the challenger a chance by hearing his rendition but it's absolutely no contest here! Marvin reigns as the soul man of song King that he is!😊❤
Chocolate Genius Inc's album, Black Music, was such a huge part of my musical discovery. The man has soul.
Marvin Gaye all day every day!!!!
I can't be objective about this, as soon as I hear the opening strains of Marvin's, Ain't That Peculiar, I'm 16 and dancing. I don't have to put any effort into it, I'm automatically transported back in time. Boys and girls, black and white, moving in time, switching partners, all in the same groove. Plain and simple, this song just triggers my happy switch!
Chocolate G took it in a whole different way than Marvin. Respect to both artists. I love both versions.
Marvin Gaye💜💜💜
hey sis 🙋🏽♀️
Who’s the competitor?
As youngins would say “ he tried it”
😂
@@ElleBrOw Hey Sis💜👋👋 He sure did try it😂😂
Marvin Gaye forever no contest
When asking whom sang it better, the two singers should be from the same era. V103 aka WVON, used to play songs from two groups or two singers for about one hour, then let callers say who they liked best. That was so much fun because you heard their most popular songs. Such memories! Truth be told, one song is for fast wild dancing while the other is suited for slow sultry movements together ( nice and cozy ). 💋
Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye.
Never heard this Ballad Version.😊
Marvin!!! The 2nd song makes me want to drink!,
😂
When you see the video of them taking a master tape and removing all the instruments and other vocals and just playing his voice, that's when you truly get to hear a master preforming his craft.
Marvin Gaye...Second to None!!!!
OK, that was REEL funny because we're past April Fool's Day!! Marvin Gaye's the legendary genius here, but the slower version is nice. 😊
Really? Marvin is in a league of his own. No Comparison! RIH Marvelous Marvin Gaye!🙏🏾❤️💐🏆🎤🎼🎹
Marvin all the way.
Marvin Gaye: 👍🏽
Marvin Gaye will always be the best singer with his sultry sexy seductive vpice
Marvin Gaye.. nuff said
Good i like so much really
Marvin for me but the other guy is singing the blues
Marvin
No comparison. Marvin.
MG!
MARVIN GAYE for overall superior musicianship! 💥 🤩
Can't nobody touch Marvin. Not October London, not even this dude.
MARVIN!!! Who is this dude?
How is this even a question? The young man has talent but he doesn't touch Marvin Gaye❤
Both artists have such different interpretations that it’s unfair to compare them. Marvin is sweeter and brighter, Chocolate Genius is doing a more angsty slow blues.
The second version made me realize that the upbeat version by Marvin really doesn't match the lyrics. But I grew up hearing Marvin's version so I prefer it out of nostalgia.
MARVIN 💯🍹🍹cheers 🥂🎊
I love Marvin Gaye, but Chocolate Genius did it best on this track. His take on the song is remarkable.
Marvin without question
This comes down to a preference of the deliveries... Marvin sounds happy to accept it... Chocolate Genius sounds resolute in acceptance of it...
Marvin.
I like both! I love a *good* cover were the artist truly tries to make it their own instead of mimicking the orginal. I prefer Marvin, but I'm not mad at CG at all.
Marvin Gaye!
Not even a contest, Marvin all the way..
Marvin Gaye 110 percent
Marvin Gaye hands down all of the way. This other dude has no emotion or feelings behind his so called version.
We all know who and what version is the best
Marvin sang it best!
I like the slow tempo but I feel like I’d have to be drunk as a MF to love it, no disrespect to Chocolate Genius.
Marvin’s version is the clear winner for me.
It’s not like a “I Heard It Through the Grapevine” comparison.
Gladys/Pips version uptempo; MGs version slower but to this very moment I love em both equally🎼🎶🎵🎤
I left @2:56
Didn’t need to hear any more before casting my vote for
THE Marvin Gaye ✅
Love the original because you can't help moving to it but - imo - Chocolate Genius' slowed down, moody version is true(r) to what the lyrics express.
What a sacrilegious comparison...
You must be kidding, Marvin gaye of corse!!!!
It's cool but Marvin all day
NO NEED TO COMPARE THEM BOTH ICONS AND HAVE OWN THIER STYLES-DNA
MG 🕊️
Marvin Gaye all the way. I am not familiar with the other guy. It was to slow and it did feel like he was singing a different song. When you cover a song you must elevate it or not harm the original. In my opinion he didn’t elevate the original and harmed the original.😮
Wow, realy? Marvin 100%
Almost an ode to DJ Screw......
Chocolate for me. Marvin sounds too commercial and not really as soulful as Choc.
yep. its marvin. couldnt really vibe with CBs version after vibing to marvin
Its Good to hear different interpretations of Songs, but I find the second version very dreary compaired to Marvin the Legend Tbh
What are we doing here?
It's a little late for April fools clearly Marvin Gaye is better Chocolate Genius version sounds better than his original when played at 2X original speed.🤭
That's not a real question, nothing beats Marvin Gaye,
* 1976 Steelers vs Marvin
* 1000lbs of granite vs Marvin
* 2 x Saturn rockets vs Marvin
* Jack Dempsey vs Marvin
* Sherman Tank vs Marvin
* Ivan Drago vs Marvin
* 4 Aces vs Marvin Gaye
Nothing beats Marvin Gaye
Forgive me ya'll when I was younger, I thought Della Reese was the one who sung this song 🤦♀️ just now knowing it's chocolate who was singing . Terrible terrible terrible🤦♀️😂
Is this a real question⁉️😆
Definitely Marvin! 2nd song is too slow
Stupid Question
😂😂😂😂😂😂 is this a trick question?
Why is destroying this song,smh
Chocolate Brown. Imagine if his were first and then Marvin had sped it up. We'd hate Marvin's.
What about Jackie Jackson's version. That one is better than Marvin's as well.
Seems i got the wrong jackson. Jermaine Jackson sang it.
Second song sucks
Marvin Gaye is more polished and more successful. More well known. Genius is not known. I mean he is not a public name.
Marvin Gaye ❤🙏🏾
Marvin !
Marvin
This is a joke, right?
