Introduction
Being independent essentially means running an autonomous foreign policy. For Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister, the conduct of foreign relations was an essential indicator of independence. This autonomy allowed India to navigate global geopolitics and secure developmental aid without being subservient to any major power bloc.
Body
Reason 1: Middle Path in Cold War Geopolitics
Nehru's policy of non-alignment was instrumental in establishing a middle path in a world divided by the Cold War.
Example: India refused to align with either the US-led Western bloc or the Soviet-led Eastern bloc. This stance was evident in India's leadership role in founding the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in 1961, which aimed to maintain independence and avoid entanglement in military alliances.
Impact: This approach allowed India to advocate for decolonization, peace, and economic development, reinforcing its sovereignty on the global stage.
Reason 2: Benefiting from Aid and Assistance
India's non-alignment policy enabled it to receive aid and assistance from both power blocs.
Example: From the Western bloc, India received substantial economic aid, including the establishment of industries and infrastructure projects under initiatives like the Community Development Program. Conversely, the Soviet Union provided technological assistance and industrial support, such as the Bhilai Steel Plant.
Impact: This balanced approach allowed India to benefit from diverse sources of support, fostering its economic development while maintaining strategic autonomy.
Conclusion
In contemporary times, India continues to follow an independent foreign policy, though the relevance of NAM has diminished. Today, India adopts a multi-alignment strategy, engaging proactively with all major powers. This approach ensures India’s strategic and economic interests are safeguarded, reflecting Nehru’s vision of a sovereign and autonomous foreign policy. By diversifying its diplomatic engagements, India remains an influential player on the global stage, embodying the principles of independence Nehru championed.
Sir please keep ncert pdf while teaching… the way u are teaching it seems like summary of chapter… but main problem with ncert is reading line by line then understanding it…
1.why did Nehru regard conduct of foreign relations as an essential indicator of independence ? State any two reasons with examples to support your reading.
Ans-- Nehru regarded conduct of foreign relations as an essential indicator of independence because it sets a country free to pursue its national interest The reasons for this statement are as given below :
(i) After the World War, there were two blocs led by US and Soviet Union. NATO and the Warsaw Pact came into existence. The countries who had joined these alliances could not go against the US or Soviet Union or other members of the alliances. The clauses of the alliances were binding on them
(ii) India did not join any group or alliance. So India could follow an independent policy. For example, in 1956 when Britain attacked Egypt over the Suez Canal issue, India led the world protest against this neo-colonial invasion.
According to, Article 51of indian constitution lays down same directive principles of state policy on promotion of international peace and security
The state shall endeavour to
(a) Promote international peace and security
(b) Maintain just and honourable realtions between nations
(c) Foster respect for international law and treaty obligations the dealing of orgainsed people with another people
(d) Encourage settlement of international disputes by arbitration
