Hi Lisa, I love your glasses. Do they filter blue light from screens? What are they called, which company makes them and where can I buy them, please? Thank you.
And remember to consider not just LENGTH of sofa you need, but sofa depth, seat depth, seat height and back height. For example, the only placement that worked in my LR was in front of a large window, so I knew I needed a low backed sofa. This in turn dictated sightly lower accent chairs and coffee table, which worked out great cuz my ceilings are standard height. Happy decorating, everyone!
Lisa Honey, I picked an exterior paint color from the very matte paint chips but got high gloss. The high gloss, although the same color really make a big difference. It looks much more saturated. Maybe the daylight or just being outdoors adds to the phenomena?
You got it rock shot! Exterior color selection is way different and has multiple factors, depending upon where you live, the compass direction, your house faces, etc. so glad it worked out great!
😂when it comes to position furniture i have to be able to vacuum behind and around my furniture except the beds yelling across the room that’s just natural to me 😂😂thank Lisa as always for terrific advice ❤
Measure your door as well. I bought a couch for my 1950s house-it fit the scale of the room, but couldn’t get it through the doorway and had to return it (minus the delivery fee).
Doublecheck the measurements anyone takes. I worked with someone who told me a horror story a friend was living. A decorator/salesperson national furniture store with a great reputation measured for a sofa in someone’s home. It was too big when it came and the store would not stand behind their mistake. The customer had an expensive custom piece that was too big for the room and had to start over elsewhere buying a new sofa.
When measuring for a sofa, make sure you also measure the side diagonal, thats from the top corner on the side 'panel' to the opposite corner. This measurement gets forgotten but is important if you need to get your sofa through a tight turn, for example up some stairs and turning a corner if living in an apartment. Think of Ross in Friends and the pivot scene, lol. An other way of seeing a room layout is to get some paper for example, cut to the same size as your furniture and lay it on the floor so you can physically see how much space you have.
Hi Lisa, it's been awhile since I commented but love what you have done to your office. Hee hee have to laugh at relamping. I had my cataracts done this summer a month apart for each eye. My right eye was looking at my Scandi White bright painted walls while my left eye still saw a dingy Antique White painted wall. When they were both done I was so happy I didn't have to paint my house after all. Getting old requires a sense of humour!
I know what you mean! Just had the first eye done..the clarity and even colors are amazing! I’ve worn glasses since I was seven…I’m 74…it’s a miracle to me! R eye next week…
Lisa I always love your content but I do take issue with the first mistake of small art. One can unite a collection through consistent frames , mat size, color or theme of paintings. Many of us in small rooms have narrow angled walls or hardware obstructions that welcomes a small bold painting. There are ways for diversity to flourish.
I was a military spouse for 23 years and the Army moved us every couple of years. I have the excellent quality couch I bought in 1995 and I now have it in my small retirement condo. It would be nice to have a smaller couch but at my age I can not afford a new one.
There is a very important distinction between design mistakes and trends. Right now large art works are 'trending' but they do not make groupings of smaller paintings design mistakes. However doing space planning is a design decision which does not follow trends and is essential.
Sometimes you look for the perfect sofa for so long….I found a Stickley sofa for $125. I know it’s too long. It’s really nice…nice color, fabric and it’s not too deep.
LISA! Can you give some advice for people with large rooms, please? My husband and I bought a house that has a giant great room in it and it is very difficult to find information online about decorating large spaces. In fact, every room in the house is larger than average. I would love it if you made a video about large spaces.
Actually, thoughtfully, putting together pictures that you like or mean something to you is more attractive than one big map or abstract picture. If it is too big, it can overwhelm the space.
I think that some folks push the furniture to the walls to create travel paths. It still sucks pickle juice, but they seemed resigned to it because they think it's, "practical." Maybe there should be an officially recognized (just not approved of) design style called, "The Lesser of Two Evils," or, "I Listened to Lisa, But Then I Gave Up." Maybe, "Intentional Resignation."

Can we talk about picking sofa and beds relative to people height as well. I crammed beds and sofas in small rooms (and eliminated the coffee and the bedside tables) so I could sleep and sit comfortably.
I'm selling my home this spring. I'll be using your ideas to make sure my home has no interior design mistakes. I have BM White Dove on all my walls. Our photographer wants only daylight (3000 K) light bulbs when he does the photo shot. Does this sound correct?
I like art that looks like art, i.e., real oil paintings done by someone with talent, not a couple of slashes of color that any grade school child could do. I'd much rather see a gallery wall of meaningful art than the large modern art pictured (or an oversized poster) simply because it's large. The same paintings like those shown in your gallery wall examples purchased in the size shown in the "do this instead" photos would be beyond expensive and more than likely commissioned custom. I do wish I could purchase a sofa sized masterpiece, though.
New sofa arrives in a couple weeks, custom color fern green velvet. I picked a sofa long enough for the hubs to lay down on (if I let him). Room is 12x23 so we're good. I went for English rolled arm so less bulky than the previous leather Natuzzi club rolled arms, Lazy-Boy style den furniture with the wide flat arms.
Great video. Change out light bulbs (test w/paint). Oh that makes sense! Big art in small spaces. Fab. On a personal note: I love your glasses. The frames are more feminine (or what I call 'girly') and are a bit smaller than the current larger frames fad, so they're not overtaking your face. See, even faces have proportion guidelines!
Hi Lisa, I just put a large scale pattern tile in a tiny kitchen as the backsplash. It’s mid installation and the client is freaking out. I’ll admit it looks a little bombastic with the counters covered and the cabinets covered and no shelving. It feels overwhelming to the client understandably. I explained my rationale ( essentially the first chapter in your video about scale) and said it’s like judging a haircut midway through. So we’re going to proceed, but I’d love to see a video on how to handle this kind of situation. I’m a newer designer - my gut says to trust my instincts and proceed with the large pattern confidently. But… she has to love it too. Hmmm.
