i am a f2p. i think if you save for at least 2 months, you can rank within top 10 or even in top 5 especially speedups and arrows

Now I have 800 steel I am saving speedup exp badge & all for phase rank at least under 10 hope its work

You can do both at the same time by killing zombies you can still get experience while you're saving for your badges.

Correct me if I am wrong but I think refinement does not give any points even though it uses the polymers

I didn't check but normally it does, because you use polymers and using polymers give points

But last time I did it during ranged TC, it gave me nothing and players on Discord confirmed it for me.

Look the stats of your cars... A lot of cars in your shelter is pretty effective to defend it. There's not so much difference from cars to other troops really. Just not so much stat buff from heroes unless you have squad buff... possible with Victor or Riven
