And even though Helsley didnt really have it tonight, I was really paying attention to see if he would break down. But he bent and didnt break. Almost had a damn heart attack in that 9th inning. I was at the game, it was the most electric I’ve heard Busch in a long time. Over 45,000 people, it was a classic Cards/Cubs game. Shoutout to the Cubs fans who came out in droves and kept it classy. A vintage, clutch moment from Matt Carpenter, that was the loudest it got all night. I really thought Oli should have pinch ran for Burly in that situation, but props to the big fella for making a great slide. The bullpen made it interesting, but did their job nonetheless. The Cardinals are looking really good right now, and it’s starting to get exciting again.

Averages ranged from 81 on the Sweeper to 93 on the 4-seamer. I think this is one reason the bats are 'waking up.' I am starting to wonder whether increased velocity across mlb is changing things--including to some extent Hendrick's ineffectiveness. In the last game you had guys on both teams hitting well placed breaking pitches *out*of the zone. Probably because they weren't quite that fast. Imanaga is the exception to the new rule here i think. guys have to man up, shorten their swings maybe, and hit these faster pitches. something. Tonight they start Sonny Gray whose fastball also is at 93. He's 6-2 with a 2.7 ERA. so this isn't going to prove anything one way or the other, but I feel cubs have to get better at hitting 95+.
