Now the newly established Taiwanese airline Starlux has been getting great reviews, so I'm really looking forward to Paul's take on it.

CI - China Airlines (not CA - Air China) has massively improved in the 2000s, marked by that change of liveries, which is just the tip of the iceberg. Service and safety was greatly improved overall. Taiwanese (ROC) airlines are among the best for transit options between SEA and USA, but CI is definitely lags behind its competitors like Eva Air and Starlux. As you can see, they don't fly the nationalist flag (Taiwan flag) but display that Ancient style Official Seal. Meanwhile, PRC flag carriers also don't show PRC flag on their planes as well, except Air China - but then Air China also removed their flags from their planes serving Taiwan routes. I tried their 777-300ER last April, in economy class, and it was the awful 3-4-3 configuration. It is dreadfully small, and without any compensation on the standard seat pitch. I am an Asian living in the U.S. I always chose Asian Airline flying oversea whenever possible because of the food choices and service.. American and European airline foods always contained dairy and sweet which I hated.
LOL, i'm sitting here watching the video and all I could think was 'Starlux does it better".....I've been lucky enough to try China Airlines, EVA and Starlux, Starlux is the best, EVA a close second and China Airlines a distant third, but hey, they are all better than the mainland airlines.
I flew China Airlines on a trip between LAX and Singapore back in 2015. Premium economy on their then brand new B773 LAX-TPE/TPE-LAX and on their ageing A333 on the TPE-SIN and SIN-TPE legs. The food was crap but the seats were very comfortable and the service and IFE were well above average. TPE is also a very nice airport to transit through - it's not as huge as SIN, ICN or HKG making for an easy transit, and it's very well designed and has a pleasant interior and plenty of good lounges and restaurants.
I smiled when I read your comment about Taipei's airport. I have made transits in Taipei many times right before the Pandemic and several times in the past year. Really one of the very few hubs in Asia without a spanking new modern airport unlike Hong Kong, Bangkok or Seoul (Incheon). Taipei's dates from 1979 when it first entered into operations. Over the years it has been renovated numerous times and now it is filled with glittering tax-free duty shops and new eateries every few months. I must say the airport has done a fantastic job with what resources and facilities they have, you rarely think it's a 45-year old bldg. And the biggest plus is not having to walk what seems like miles if you have to rush to your next connection. At the other newer airports in Asia you have to do a marathon just to connect flights.
When I flew their business class back then on Mar to and from US, they did HAD ground drink service and it is a special juice mocktail. When you left Taipei there are pretty good pre-book meal. They have one famous Japanese meal and one good vegetarian meal prepared by Yang Ming-Spring, a Michelin Green star restaurant.
I am tall so reclining seat depth, well angle and shelf width are very important. Can you cover this more deeply? Just flew Singapore on the 20 hours to NYC sitting up because of the shallow and angled tight foot well. United center aisles are my best experience. Maybe a separate program for tall and large.
I find it nearly impossible to pause the video at the right moment to see what your comment is once you touch the plane for good luck. Paul, I’m unable to answer your question about cricket though. 😂
Awesome video! I'm flying on this type of plane with china airlines next week and your video is very helpful. btw do you find 23A to be a nice seat? I'm considering getting this seat on my flight as well!
A great report. We flew on a China Airlines from Taiwan to Bangkok on a B747-400 not long before it was ferried to the desert. The service was superb. What is it with today's airlines not having window seats in Business Class any more? The airlines that have alternate aisle and window seats are OK, if you know which they are. There should be a website that filters Business Class seats by Window Seat, Aisle Seat (despite what some vloggers say, that's not a window seat - it's next to the aisle so...), and two seats together for those on business trips that want to work with colleagues during the flight, and couples travelling together when one likes a window seat - like us. It would save time for many like-minded people.
The fares from EU to TPE look reasonable. The fares between US east coast and Taipei have been outrageous! Checking fares for spring 2024 and on some dates it’s over $2000 USD in economy for a return trip.
I am doing nearly 30hrs each way between LHRTPESYD in a couple weeks but just in Premium Economy, but with free showers at SYD and TPE if you know where to look and some excellent food options on CI and at TPE airport I am not completely dreading it! ;) Your review helped me make that choice.
Good video but I was sad to see that you dumped the steamed milk in the airport lounge instead of drinking it... there is so much food waste in this world 😢
I just booked this week a one way business class ticket on China Southern from Melbourne Victoria Aust to London Heathrow for a brilliant price $3400 AUD ! A 29 hour flight which includes a one 6 hour stop in Gaungzhou Go seat and stretch in the Business lounge, grab a shower then head off for a 12 hr flight to London ,Sweet ! :)
Really liked the decor of that seat, warm colors and the "wood," but nothing beats the apartment you had on i think Singapore. And hey, we can play cricket here in the US, we just don't know how.
I flew with them a month ago YVR - CGK and back. Service and food was fine, but i hated the premium economy seats. They were so uncomfortable that I wished I was in economy instead. Instead of the back reclining, the seat slides out to give the back room to recline. This then eliminates the extra leg room.
Sliding seats is the trend these days, almost every modern ones are like that, since seat pitch are getting smaller these days. The economy in CI's 777-300ER is 3-4-3 arrangement, very narrow at 17" (narrower than 737MAX even). Siting on the aisle, you will be repeatedly bumped by people walking in aisle and my head was bumped by galley cart. Are you sure you want that? The Premium Economy looked fine, but the Business Class definitely is very decent. All in all, not recommending China Airlines, you better off with Eva Air or maybe Starlux if they every fly to Jakarta.
The one aspect I like about the hard shell design is if the passenger in front of you does a full recline, his head is not in your face bc the recline is within the contour of the shell design. Regular seatbacks in full recline you can literally see the scalp of the person in front of you and the seatback is literally in your lap. Sometimes you can't even get up to leave your seat. Not fun on a long haul flight. But yeah, the seats take some getting used to.
Great vlog as always! You did take the words out of my mouth when it comes to adult daycare centers, or as some call it, lounge area. An office cantine or lunch room. That is why I never bather to use them. I would have given the soup away too. Lol! I never eat chicken. It is the cheapest food to buy for an airline. There are only ONE type of chicken. There are many types of fish! I do not eat pasta too. I would not have kept The North Face gear, I like to buy my own eye mask and stuff. Looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
I like how for the 777, China Airlines and Air Canada are keeping the classic sidewalls with a distinctive color theme while other airlines like United are replacing their colored sidewalls (which used to be blue as inherited from Continental) with a generic white sidewall.
This is one ugly design. If you fly enough, you will know. China Airlines's mood lighting is also very dim, even during boarding, take off and other normal tasks. The darkness and coldness of dark wall panel and dim mood light, make you feel you are in a dungeon. This theme continue into their lounges at TPE airport. Everything is dark and depressing. This also does not align with A330 and A321 in their fleet where things are more lively with pink, purple and violet colors. They would do better with generic sidewalls and only leave this fake bamboo crap on the entry and accent wall.
Great video Paul. I just made a similar award redemption from LAX to TPE thru Air France as well for my Tokyo trip later this year in November. Was just curious when you were able to select your seat or if you were assigned it.
@@Paul_Lucas Can you provide some guidance here or in a private message? Whenever I enter my e-ticket number into the China Air website, my reservation is not popping up.
No chance. You don't drink expensive whiskey neat on a plane, your taste buds will not pick up any of the lighter floral notes without ice or iced water unlocking them.
I flew CA a few timed in the 1980's and 90's. I was quite underwhelmed by their service and food. The flight attendants were borderline rude. I would definitely choose EVA. The other reviews, eh? Well...we know some that are on the take now don't we.

There are many types of fish! I do not eat pasta too. I would not have kept The North Face gear, I like to buy my own eye mask and stuff. Looking forward to the next one. Keep up the good work. Be safe!
Those condor livery’s always remind me of the sand worms from Beetlejuice
China airline is not the best. Would recommend to try EVA airline. Exclusive hello kitty flight is awesome as well
When was this recorded? Also, I've been on that exact plane back in 2018.
Hey Paul! What's that thing you always touch with your fingers just before entering the plane?😊
Was that a length of rope in the North Face amenity kit?
They put the Hai-ya into Hainese Chicken & Rice.
Just needs the orange polo shirt to complete the look.
I actually saw him live in London this year!
The prices are just insane never seen anything like it.
Because we don’t like cricket, we love it!
Great video Paul. I just made a similar award redemption from LAX to TPE thru Air France as well for my Tokyo trip later this year in November. Was just curious when you were able to select your seat or if you were assigned it.
You can pick your seat on the China Airlines website after booking on KLM/AF with miles, no problem.
@@Paul_Lucas Can you provide some guidance here or in a private message? Whenever I enter my e-ticket number into the China Air website, my reservation is not popping up.
You should get a 6-character record locator from KLM/AF when you book; use this. The e-ticket number won't work.
Hmm the breakfast looked like someone or something had 🤮 up on the plate !
China Airlines from Taiwan has a super bad safety record 😮😮😮
The lounge that's literally called Priority....is NOT the Priority *Pass* lounge 😂
What 'hype'???
You killed that whiskey 🥺🥺🥺
A great, up-to-date comparison there. The 90's was only like 24~34 years ago, that's almost like yesterday.
At least this Bazball hype got me watching cricket on TV for the first time!
