The Disruptors: The 'Uber effect' on the Taxi Industry

  • I spend a lot of time at Fox 5 covering startups. One of the biggest compliments you can pay a startup is to call it a disruptor, changing not just local business, but entire industries across the country and even around the world.
The transformation of the taxi and black car business is thanks largely to Uber. In less than a decade, Uber seemingly has become larger than life.
Travis Kalanick and partner Garrett Camp came up with the idea while trying to get a cab in Paris back in 2008. Their solution: Tap your smartphone, get a ride. Uber launched in beta in San Francisco in summer 2010 with a seed round of just $200,000. In 2014 at the Time 100 red carpet, Kalanick said Uber had maybe, finally, gotten to mass market.
It is certainly mass market today. Uber is currently valued at nearly $70 billion, has over 10,000 employees, and more than a million drivers operating in 528 cities around the world.

With Uber I always feel like I have a friend around the corner of I need a ride. Taxis made me wake an hour most times. Im disabled on fixed income. It makes a huge Difference

YES. Taxis would say "15 min" and take an hour (or sometimes never show up). I have a chronic pain condition and need something dependable. SO glad Uber has forced the industry to be better.

Before Uber we used to call the cab companies and tried to get rides. They would either not answer or not show up. When you do get into a cab they were rude, the cars were garbage and they didn't know where they were going. Most of all it was also expensive. I relish watching the taxi industry die a slow but certain death.

    This is the 21st century. E-hail, e-hail, e-hail, e-hail, e-hail.
    1. Allows me to order in my language.
    2. Allows me to tell app exactly where I am going and driver sees it on his app.
    3. Shows driver best route to take.
    4. Allows me to see us drive to my destination on my map
    5. Allows me to order inside not outside in bad weather
    6. Allows me to order wherever I am without worrying if a taxi drives by. I consider it good customer service to not get mugged walking a mile in the dark at midnight to a place taxis drive by. That's just me, though. You may like getting raped or mugged.
This is what matters to me. This is the system I support and I don't care about drivers who don't operate this way. Where I live now that has E-hail, I have taken a car at least 300 times in 5 months. In the previous 10 months I lived in a place that did not have e-hail available and I took a taxi 10 times in 10 months.
E-hail allows me freedom and a social life. If supporting your lifestyle requires me to be imprisoned on my block, don't count on my support.

Any kind of technology that helps the taxi industry would be always welcome, the problems are when those promoters with money and power circumvents the rules. Competition within the frame of the laws and rules is great.

The fact that rideshare companies are permitted to operate without any kind of enforcement of the city's livery ordinances is a clear violation of public trust.
Even if it's what the mob seems to want, laws and ordinances were put in place for a reason and should be upheld.

@@joesgsju1040 your just mad cause you didn't think of it. The simple fact is that ride sharing companies have a taken a huge bite out of taxis. Yellow cab was a huge monopoly on ordering rides and in most cases the drivers where jerks to a point that you rather wait for a bus. Also last but not least you're in a clean car and with someone who doesn't mind having a conversation with. Now what else are you going to say?
