How to Avoid Staining Your Concrete with Sidewalk Chalk

  • "It's just washable CHALK AND WATER" were my thoughts as I read some comments on a viral video about this staining concrete. "People are ridiculous!" (that also ran through my mind) Well, I was eating some humble pie as I scrubbed my concrete with a scrub brush trying to get this concoction off.
I do think it's because I did not smash my chalk fine enough. My kids loved helping smash it, but some bigger chunks got through ...which I think made it too concentrated & harder to remove. Once I re-smashed (to a powder sugar consistency using a mallet), painted it on, let us sit 3-4 hours & washed off - it came right off 🤷🏻‍♀️.
So, if you do this, smash that chalk FINE and Maybe paint it on the public sidewalk 🤣. The @chuckleandroar stencils, cards, & painters tape were a hit though & can easily be used with just plain ol' sidewalk chalk (which maybe don't mess with perfection & stick with just chalk 😅)
👉🏻 The other recipe that works: 1:1 ratio of cornstarch and water + food coloring. I tested it & it didn't stain 👌🏻
Have you fallen victim to sidewalk chalk paint?! I gotta know I'm not alone!

The pigments in the kid's sidewalk chalk are in NO way a high lightfastness (expensive) pigment, so they will totally sun bleach with time. It should just leave behind calcium carbonate and maybe a few other white water soluble minerals that will wash away.

Hey! I used to make "paint" all the time as a kid with my neighbors and this brought back memories lol. It doesn't stain (at least mine never did), but it does last longer. Thats why we always used it as a kid, it sticks around after a light rainstorm, but after two or three medium ones, it will come off on its own. So no, it doesn't stain, but it will take longer to wash off on it's own 😊

It’ll stain, but not permanently. We did this when we were kids and it was fun messy play.

Just think it's good info for people to have. You don't expect chalk to stain, so it shocked me when it did once it was wet. Do with the info what you want 👌🏻

i made sidewalk chalk paint last summer with my cousins and painted one of the brick pillars on my back porch with blue, red, yellow and green. even now the pillar is so colorful even with all of the rain and sun that has happened 😭😭

Oh no! That's the thing with it, most use it on their driveway, but if you start painting it elsewhere, it's good to know it can stain!

In a lot of the recipes I've seen, you're supposed to mix the chalk and water with flour or corn starch

Hey it's just concrete. Let the kids have fun. It's just chalk. It'll come off eventually. Let them kids be kids ma'am

Cornstarch, water and food coloring also work

Yes! A great alternative for sure. I like it better TBH. Easier to make.

You can just scribble with the chalk then wet the paint brush and then draw on the scribble with the brush

I painted the wall outside my work with chalk paint 5 years ago and you can still kind of see the blue on the concrete that stuff is craazzzzy easy to stain lol-

Give it a few rain cycles and it'll eventually wash away. I never realized that having my babies longer-than-temporary art on my driveway would trigger something dark in my OCD lol

My favorite way ive seen it done, may not work for younger kids, is this girl pressing really hard and putting a lot of chalk then painting over top of it with a damp paint brush. My niece is seven and loves doing it

it stained because the concrete absorbed the water and because the chalk was mixed into it, was also absorbex, keep letting it dry then washing amd itll eventually come of

It would come off eventually, don’t even sweat it. It won’t permanently stain the concrete.

Honestly normal chalk kept us and our neighbours entertained for hours as kids, although we never cleaned it so the rest of the street got to admire whatever we'd been doing 😅
