In deed as a tech person, having a website is a an added advantage, it has helped land decent jobs for the past 4 years. If you also someone who doesnt enjoying talking too much about your expertise, your website is always gonna do the talking.
The idea that you need to have 190k followers on twitter and make yourself borderline famous to work in tech is absolutely ridiculous to me 😂, this modern world is so overrated bro
You are absolutely right about viewing your individual effort in a company as a business. Its not only helpful to oneself but brings value to the company. You tend to take more intiative - initiative in a tech resource makes decision makers more cofindent.
Web Portfolio and Github account are usual requirements employers want from Junior / entry level jobs, and I'm starting to notice Cloud certs or experience are added advantage.
Great video Travis!! What is diference between your personal website"travismedia" and one in video? Also, do we write the blog post on VS code and then auto publish to the server?
Great video. What do you think about cloud hosting? I want to take your advice and put my site online but I would like to add few more app ideas online and was thinking what is the best choice, VPS or Cloud hosting.
you blurred out the information at the site, but when you pasted the info into github it was unblurred.. Not sure if the IPs and info is still out there but figured if no one had mentioned it and you went through the trouble of blurring id let you know
Thanks, yeah I usually mess that up 😂. I have a pretty crazy secure password for that access so not too worried but probably will fix that later today. Thanks again.
Hey travis , really nice video ! I was wondering if I could help you with more Quality Editing in your videos and also make a highly engaging Thumbnail and also help you with the overall youtube strategy and growth ! Pls let me know what do you think ?
Why would a developer, who's trying to sell himself as a developer, be okay with just using a wordpress website? Unless he's specifically marketing himself as a "Wordpress Developer" in which he would surely know how to set up a wordpress website. I mean, if you're trying to make some affiliate money, just say so 😆
The website technology is hidden to most people. It doesn't matter and/or people don't care. It's what your website portrays and portrays about you that matters. I've used Ghost. I've used Hugo. And there is a large amount of wasted time spent in development that a CMS like WordPress speeds up (my site ended back up on WordPress after several years away). It can be fun to develop on those platforms, sure, but if there is an outcome you're after, the quicker the actual process takes, the better.
great advice, could the idea of software engineering firms make sense in this world, like law firms but for engineers. To connect ccustomers with competent engineers directly. customers will get guarantees of maintainance and upgrades. Competent engineers will be able to get rid of the middle man.
@@maxfrischdev did not know how that, but arent consulatancy engineers not employees, they work for the founder of the firm. Idealy there would be working more indepedently with other patners
@@turithi well, if I think about it again.. what comes closest to a law firm would probably be an IT consultancy that is formed by a hand full of experienced engineers/experts/consultants, who act as partners, UNTIL the consultancy starts to hire people and the "founders" more and more slide indo people managers, rather than being hands-on consultants anymore. So, this initial stage of only the partners themselves doing the projects, without having technical employees would be the equivalent of the law firm example, right?
@@turithi I worked for such a consultancy in Austria years ago. And it was honestly quite fascinating to see, that like only half of the "founders" enjoyed the transition to management and "not having to do the work anymore", the other half HATED management and the pure business side and were dreaming of getting their hands dirty again in code or configurations 😅🤷🏼♂️
@@maxfrischdev the founders can be project leads or project managers, overseeing products, QA leading small teams of specialisation. The problem wityh the setup is u eventually end up being like a mini microsoft, with employees that need to be managed and some retail software. It would beat Travis point of seeing urself as a business. I guess only a small team of partners would retain their individual business value and solo developers are the best way to provide the service because u dont rely on someone else to show up.
I don't agree with that. What I think is much better is creating a good Medium page and posting some articles or stories. It gets much more exposure and can be more beneficial in the long run. However, having a website is still better than having nothing. :)
I have a fundamental problem with this thinking. While Medium can be a great way to reach a large audience, I am limited to those who have a membership with medium. If someone lands on my story and does not have a membership they see a short snippet and a paywall. By taking the time to build out a website site including a place to place all your stories, you can build up your brand, not mediums.
You can cross-post on Medium, but nothing like having a home base that you own and manage IMO (as opposed to being at the discretion of whatever direction Medium decides to go at any time).
@@DonJuanchito Ok there are enough websites. They are basically useless since in my world I want files and not to look at your stupid crap. I know you're trying to get a job because you're dependent on these big companies like everyone else on the planet. But it's just digital garbage.
