Much of this footage was from the 1977 Munich concert. This concert was captured for German TV. RUclips has all the songs from this concert and is worthy of checking out. "Mistreated", "Catch the Rainbow", "16th Century Greensleeves", "Kill the King", "Man on the Silver Mountain", "Long Live Rock N Roll", "Still I'm Sad", and "Do you Close Your Eyes" are awesome songs from this concert. This concert was pretty magical, wish I had been there. Rainbow is one of those bands that were outstanding and didn't get noticed as much in the USA as bands like Led Zeppelin did and this song was the motivation to "Kashmir" that came out the year before.
This is the studio version of the song, played with concert footage to make it seem live. 1976. I saw them touring in support of their next several albums, in 1978, 1979, 1981 and 1982. Dio was fired by Ritchie Blackmore (Rainbow’s founder and guitarist) after the 1978 album, Long Live Rock & Roll. He then replaced Ozzy Osbourne in Black Sabbath. His first album with Sabbath, Heaven and Hell, was one of my two favorite albums of 1980, the other being AC/DC’s Back in Black.
After the release of Long Live Rock 'n' Roll and its extensive world tour in 1978, Blackmore decided that he wanted to take the band in a new, more mainstream direction, away from the "sword and sorcery" themes. Dio did not agree with this change and left the band.
Drummer is Cozy Powell, the incomparable Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, Tony Carey on keys and Jimmy Bain on bass; keyboardists in the '70's specifically had a bunch of keyboards, partly because each had it's own signature sound like the Hammond B3 organ, the Moog MiniMoog synthesizer, the ARP 2600 and the Yamaha CS80. It fell out of fashion in the '80's to have all those instruments onstage because they were a pain in the ass to move and set up, easy to damage (tough to get repaired) and they took up tons of room on touring trucks (also they were mad expensive), the '70's was the heyday of analog synthesizers, the '80s saw new digital tech that could emulate various keys and synths on single instruments. Rush is another good example, Geddy had a pretty big key/synth setup in the '70's and early '80's then streamlined his keyboard setup, or check out Keith Emerson (of ELP) he had a massive Moog modular setup, it's ridiculous
Oh to have been there!!! But I was only five so... 4 of the top musicians and The top singer ever in hardrock music!! You boys are sooooooooo young 😄and have so much to discover. The tip is to follow the individual paths of these five people. Ronni James Dio: Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath, Dio Ritche Blackmore: Deep Purple, Rainbow Cozy Powell: So many bands... Jimmy Bain: So many bands... (Dio) Tony Carey: Has a really good solo career Sadly only Ritchie and Tony are still with us today. If you follow these guys you will find a universe of divine music. Enjoy!!
Very sound advice. And the music was unlike anything of its time. So sad that today’s music is so lousy. We’ve lost some of the greats, and we will never get that music back. Must treasure what we had and yes, keep them in platinum! Rest in peace, Ronnie we miss you dearly down here
This is my drama teacher’s favorite band… this is from the 1976 album, one of the best songs… another good one is Lost in Hollywood from the 1979 album
Rainbow is the band of deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters, meeting Dio and Cozy Powell on drums was a match made in Heaven.
This was 1976. All the keyboards were most likely used during the show. At live shows it is very common for performers to have multiple instruments. You notice it most with guitarists using different guitars for different songs. This is because each one is tuned and adjusted differently depending on the song. It is much easier to have multiple instruments all tuned just right for that song than to use just one that is generically tuned. This is common with big name bands because they have the money to afford 25 guitars and 8 keyboards.
RIP RJD! "man on the silver mountain", "holy diver", "rainbow in the dark" are a couple of bangers. Dio was only like 5 foot nothing, its amazing that such a powerful booming voice could come out of such a small frame.
I was seing this concert tour when it was in Copenhagen, i think 1976 or 77. OMG it was loud. I got a tone in my head that was a clear sign of something bad...lol. But the concert was awesome
I was at this your with the same set list 2 weeks prior to this concert in Glasgow. Everything that night was awesome. What isn't shown is when Cozy's drum solo the whole drum kit leaves the stage floor and rises to the top of the rainbow. And to think this was 1977!
Hey! Awesome to see your reaction. A comment about the keyboards. Back in the day it was all organs, pianos and the Hammond. No Computer shit. All Live and EXPLOSIVE. Just like Ronnie and Ritchis
the rainbow stage lights drew so much juice that they interfered with the mics and speakers. also, the first monsters of rock concert at donnington featured anvil, saxon, april wine, judas priest, and scorpions opening for rainbow.
Dio was the best rock singer of all time and cozy Powell was unbelievable and strong on the drums. With Jim bain and tony carey and last but not least Ritchie Blackmore on guitar, these years will always be special to me, and especially this album "Rising". RIP Ronnie and Cozy 🌈
Ronnie James Dio is indeed amazing, both as lead singer of this band, then as lead singer of Black Sabbath, and finally with his own band (Dio). There are two songs by Rainbow on my playlist, and which I recommend for yours: Man On The Silver Mountain (featuring Dio), and then an 80s hit they did with a new lead singer who was brought in at the end of the 70s, Graham Bonnet. This song, Since You've Been Gone, is a LOT different than their 70s metal-ish sound, and more mainstream rock. But it is good! Check both songs out! And I dunno...maybe do, you know, like a reaction vid maybe? Lol
Wasn't better than Sabbath bloody Sabbath or paronid . Heaven and hell matched those two. But nothing else with Ronnie did . However mob rules was really good
You guys picked a great song to listen to. The most complete hard rock/metal song in my opinion. If you guys want to hear another classic metal song listen to Pain Killer by Judas Priest. Dio and Halford (the lead singer of Priest) are two of the most iconic metal vocalists of all time. Rock on guys!
This songs tells s story but it doesn't end here. A light in the black, is the continuation of the song so if you want to know what happened after the wizard bit the dust, have a listen.
You have just discovered one of the greatest songs in rock history, sung by the master himself Mr Ronnie James Dio circa 1976. Listen to as much RJD as you can and your lives will be better for it. Namely Heaven and Hell and Sign of the Southern Cross from his Black Sabbath years, and Gates of Babylon which is another Rainbow banger.
And yes it is Ronnie James Dio his wife just did a documentary on him and it is totally the best documentary that's a long long time it was out on Showtime but I'm pretty sure it's out here on RUclips which I'll send it to you guys The Scholar boys I lift you up high as getting ready to send this song to LOL you're moving in the right direction guys I'll somewhere down the line would have seen some stuff too so you guys can feel it and see it and know it and get it and your guys are there I love to teach I love the show Young and men and women music especially good music like us Gears of War 4 Live Nation entertainment and was a production manager for many many years I'm so sorry that the younger Community does not have older men and women taking you guys out the shows and showing you where the music is like I did when I was growing up I'm here to help and pass it on to you guys that's my gift to all the younger men and women out there in the world definitely will send you some music so you guys can check out and you make your decision and you totally definitely can't go wrong with deal in the front of The Voice rainbow rumor. Started with Rambo and then he went over to Black Sabbath and then he left Black Sabbath and started his own thing you guys need to check it all out and you won't be unhappy you'll be blown All the instruments you see them playing they're playing every one of them it's like seeing Rick Wakeman of yes the guy has a full 5-6 piece or more keyboards around him and he plays them all away Peace ✌
Really it was impossible to find a performance with a live sound, and not this - from the studio album. Well, it’s clear that he couldn’t sing like that live. Personally, my attitude to such installation is purely negative. Because it's a scam. Making idiots out of people.
yes I was at that show and UFO opened and then rainbow came on and they killed it like you can't even imagine okay.. Ronnie James Dio sing for rainbow himself and Black Sabbath

Slightly backwards there. Ronnie James Dio. :D
Vip
Right, but can't dismiss that he is the best...nick pick thanks. Really ?!@@kevinunderwood4104
Hey Twins, there's a follow-up song called "A Light in the Black", which continues the story told in Stargazer. And it's playlist-worthy too 👍
This belongs on everyone's road trip playlist...no question about it! Long songs like this are perfect for those, as it seems to make the time fly by.
Oh to have been there!!! But I was only five so...

Richie Blackmore is the guitarist. (His band.) Prior to that, he was a founder of Deep Purple.
This is my drama teacher’s favorite band… this is from the 1976 album, one of the best songs… another good one is Lost in Hollywood from the 1979 album
I love this song so much it brings tears to my eyes.
Miss RJD everyday!! He left everything on stage!!
Rainbow is the band of deep Purple guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters, meeting Dio and Cozy Powell on drums was a match made in Heaven.

It was the best line up. This song proves it
Rainbow - Since you've been gone
Rainbow - I surrender
Rainbow - All night long
All bangers!

The song that made dio a rock god. Greatest vocals you'll ever hear.
R.I.P Ronnie, Cozy amd Jimmy
Saw them in Sydney, Australia in 1977(?). Brilliant in the Hordern Pavilion, a small venue. They blew the power at one stage.
It's been on my play list since 1975.
DAUGHTERS.."The reason they hate me"
All star band
1980's Black Sabbath - Dio era "Heaven & Hell"
Ya rainbow is a sick band .
Gates of Babylon live, also by Rainbow, is a bit shorter but no less epic!!
This is one of those songs I discover new reactions to. Fifth of Firth and Close to the Edge are others
