As a 16 year old lad in 1971, I was fortunate to join London Transport, engineering staff as a garage trainee. I worked with men who had seen the RM into service at PR in 1959. The RM was a dream to work on. Service rota Inspections, and unit changes were easy and straightforward. You would be allocated a total of 2 men, one days work to remove a worn out engine, and replace it with a reconditioned unit. You had to build up the unit sent down from Chiswick, with as many new or reconditioned parts as you could. Fuel pump, injectors plus pipes, water hozes. Not forgetting the fluid flywheel, that you had to change the race, and test the unit with air and a little oil to ensure there were no leaks. We had a few of our coachmakers who had worked at Park Royal, and they explained that there was an excellent standard of workmanship, across all grades. Must have been interesting to see. As for this model, it looks almost real. What a nice little job, well done.👍 Kind regards all.👍 Ps; edit. This year 2021, would have been my 50th anniversary, when I was bought over to Poplar on the West Ham stores lorry. Doesn't time fly. I do remember the closure of Poplar in November 1985. It was a sad occasion, although upstairs in the output snooker hall, there was a very large party going on, with much ale being consumed. As a bus mechanic at that time, I was busy with bus transfers to other garages, so I didn't touch a drop. Also sad to say that many of our garage Routemaster tools were being scrapped because other garages had their own tools and didn't want "Your old junk". If my memory serves me, I believe that Poplar was originally built in 1906 as a tram depot. I have recently seen plans for the redevelopment of the gasworks, and the Poplar garage site. I do hope to go back to Leven Road E14, for one last look at the old place before its all gone forever. I should also think that all my old workmates have long since passed away. They certainly knew Routemaster buses, and they were grand men to work with. Please forgive my edit. The memories come flooding back, whenever I see these machines that I once worked on over the pits.👍
Hi Jonnie As a lad in the early 70s I remember getting the No8 from bow to Holborn, loved sitting downstairs in front watching the driver. Once lost my wage packet on the bus, ran all the way to Bow garage in Fairfield road, found the conductor, who after pulling my leg saying “you lost them wages boy” then gave me the complete envelope back, different world then!
@@jeremiahcoade6419 Yes a different world, now gone forever. Glad to hear that got your wages back. The old conductors I knew, were all straight like that. They would have certainly handed in lost property. Kind regards.👍 Jonnie
Given the time and cost, I was wondering how many would be prepared to take on this project, so it's good to see that some of you did. I like that you demonstrated the lights and the overall build looks fab.
At a cost of £99.99 over 12 months. Arguably a quicker build and marginally cheaper than Hachette's. You can see the promotional video here - ruclips.net/video/nwKjTLsFi8Q/видео.html
I'm trying to ascertain which issues had figurines. I think it was 46,53,77,83,94,123 and 128. Would you mind checking for me as I am wanting to buy them.

It was a magazine part build many years ago, you bought the mag and with it you got a piece of the bus after a lot of money and magazines you got all the parts to construct the model shown. Correct me if I am wrong Kevin..... plus I drove these at SW garage from 1978 until their demise the best bus ever!
