  • LSM is pleased to present the 2024 Musical Advent Calendar
    Day 1 | Sunday, December 1
    Lord, Keep Us Steadfast in Your Word | BuxWV 27
    Dietrich Buxtehude (1637-1707)
    LSM Faculty & Fellows
    Chad Fothergill, conductor
    Excerpted from the Faculty & Fellow Recital & Evening Prayer on Monday, July 22, 2024
    Since the nineteenth century, households and congregations have marked the days before Christmastide with many types of Advent calendars. The season of waiting and longing for the “already-but-not-yet” incarnation of Jesus unfolds amidst waning daylight in the Northern Hemisphere, a time of yearning for hope, joy, and peace.

    Thank you for these Advent musical reflections. We look forward to each day's offering.
    It was interesting to read about the Buxtehude-Bach connection.

    For those who'd like to read the lyrics - I couldn't find a version that has the additional Dieterich Buxtehude text
    "Lord, Keep Us Steadfast In Your Word;
    Curb Those Who By Deceit Or Sword
    Would Wrest The Kingdom From Your Son
    And Bring To Naught All He Has Done.
    Lord Jesus Christ, Your Power Make Known,
    For You Are Lord Of Lords Alone;
    Defend Your Holy Church, That We
    May Sing Your Praise Triumphantly.
    O Comforter Of Priceless Worth,
    Send Peace And Unity On Earth;
    Support Us In Our Final Strife
    And Lead Us Out Of Death To Life."

      I don't think you would like the original lyrics to Luther's hymn. Francis Browne's translation of Luther's first verse (which is indeed close to the German) is:
      Preserve us, Lord, with your word,
      and control the murderous rage of the Pope and the Turks,
      who would want to cast down Jesus Christ, your son,
      From his throne.
      We generally sing three verses of this hymn using Catherine Winkworth's translation.
