It looks like the Academy is finally moving towards international representation, and being less American-centric. BAFTA has as far back as the 40s recognised foreign-language films and performances. The Academy definitely should have done this, but always seemed to look down on them.

Cody and you play off each other very well! I used to follow movies and the oscars at the first half of the 2010s, but then my professional career took almost all of my energy. Since Everything Everywhere All At Once ive fallen back into it. This was the first Oscars I have seen all BP nominees and im glad i did, Looking forward to seeing more from you guys.
Yes, the work on costumes for Barbie was fantastic, but by no meaning close to the incredible job they did on Poor Things - just like the production design!!
The nomination is what’s important. All this “we have all this work to do over again.” Is bullshit. We literally just had the first ever Asian winners last year all that doesn’t get undone because Emma Stone won this year. Tired of hearing this kind of talk.
Conflicted is the right word. Not to take anything away from Emma's triumph, just as many people felt sad about Lily's loss. They were both deserving but the sting is deep and resonates. Gladstone holding an Oscar would have been a perfect ending - worthy of a Hollywood movie.
after emma won bafta, 4 days later final oscar voting began. so she has the momentum going in. then after 3 days of oscar voting, lily won sag. so lily has the momentum for the last 3 days of oscar voting. where as in the case of last year, after michelle yeoh won sag, 4 days later final oscar voting began. so michelle has the momentum going in for the entire 6 days of oscar voting, and i think that makes a difference between michelle winning and lily losing the oscar. the timeline for last year final oscar voting is so important that it also helps brendan fraser to win over austin butler, and jamie lee curtis to win over angela basset and kerry condon.
One note about costumes. The reason I switched from Barbie to Poor Things is that the latter had two elements that Oscar voters love: period style (Little Women, Ma Rainey) and imagination (Black Panther). True, as Cody pointed out, the Academy does like to reward fashion-focused movies, but Phantom Thread was a period piece, and Cruella had imaginative costumes. The fact that Wakanda Forever beat Mrs. Harris last year makes me think that period style and imagination count more than fashion-focus.
I am loving Brian and Cody friendship. Keep videos coming! Taking the occasion to thank you both for this amazing Awards season. How fun was to watch you guessing and reviewing movies. And now...on to the next! Congratulations to all the winners and good luck for the new season ❤
I don't get it. I always believed (though one can't be one hundred per cent for certain) that Emma stone would win it, and that the SAG award was compensation for the fact that Gladstone wasn't going to win. Stone was actually very good and she's loved. Remember when Julie Christie won the SAG but lost the Oscar.
While I was really hoping for Lily Gladstone to win I’m not unsurprised it was Emma Stone who won. I didn’t really like Poor Things but she was great in it. A very technically impressive performance. I much prefer this win over La La Land. I think the thing that is bothering me & this is nothing against Emma… is that she is always in the conversation. She’s very popular. Adored by her peers. Her films are always on the radar. She’s been nominated regularly over the past few years & now she has won 2 Oscars in 7 years. We all know she’ll be back in next few years possibly to be considered again. I mean she has another Yorgos film coming out soon. I feel like she’s becoming the Leonardo DiCaprio of the awards circuit… she’s always there. Lol. Which is awesome for her. She should be if she’s giving amazing performances… It’s not her I have the problem with. I think it’s just sad we got so close to Lily making history that really would have meant something to so many people. I’m with Cody… it does feel like we’ve gone back to the beginning of the progress that Lily paved the way for. It is like a reset after almost getting there. How long will it be now until a Native American man/woman does win an Oscar? They certainly don’t get nominated like Emma Stone does. I just hope we get more Lily Gladstone in our future. She has a fantastic career ahead of her. And maybe one day soon she’ll get that elusive Oscar.
I saw both "killers of the flower Moon" and "poor things" . To say that Gladstone would beat over Stone is a joke, unless of course you take all the demographic points and social expectations Emma Stone carried "poor things", and hands down. Every scene was a controlled burn, with both gas and matches in her hands. She owns that victory without looking back.
Agreed 100%. All the things I heard about Lily Gladstone possibly winning was "Gladstone has the narrative, a win would make a historical moment, it's the only win that Killers Of The Flower Moon will get, Emma Stone already has an Oscar, etc etc...." Not once did I hear anyone say that Gladstone would win the Oscar because she gave a better performance than Emma Stone. You know why? Because she didn't. I can't even fathom Gladstone taking that Oscar over what Stone did in Poor Things.
I’m just a bit annoyed that Killers of the Flower Moon didn’t win anything, especially given that several of the Indigenous nominees were passed over for people who’d already won. I’d have at least given Best Actress and Best Original Song. Maybe best Score just to honour the late Robbie Robertson, but it’s hard to be mad with Ludwig Goransson winning for his incredible work on Oppenheimer. But overall it was a mostly agreeable ceremony. Oppenheimer cleaned up in all the categories I wanted it to (particularly the cinematography award made me happy), Wes Anderson finally won something (even if he wasn’t there, which is funny), John Mulaney’s bit as well as Schwarzenegger/DeVito/Keaton, most of the acceptance speeches and I can’t be the only one who kind of loves Al Pacino’s best Picture announcement? Right?
This thing has happened with 4th time this century that his film was nominated in a lot of categories but failed to win in a single. Others were Gangs of New York, The Wolf of Wall Street, The Irishman
Martin scorssisy problem he is always make his film funny and light sooo he in the end looose And if he focus in lilly gladston role more leanardoo maybe she win He foucus about criminal not about victim Academy invite native amrican to play music and invinte themin red carpet
I think of lot of folks making predictions were guilty of overthinking. The fact that Lily Gladstone wasn’t even nominated at BAFTA should’ve been the clearest sign she wasn’t going to win the Oscar. It’s one thing to be nominated but lose. But when you’re not even nominated? This is why I couldn’t understand why so many people were attaching so much weight to SAG. Does a win at one show completely negate not being nominated at the previous show?
I felt the way about best actress the way Cody felt about best animated feature. In contrast to Brian, my favorite wins of the night are usually the ones I predict wrong. This year it was Emma Stone, last year it was Ruth Carter. Love, love, love this series. Please bring Cody back next year!
Narrative undoubtedly always plays a part, but the question is how much should it? Gladstone winning would almost have felt her winning based on her ethnicity and the moment as opposed to her performance and how right is that? What we need less of is narratives like, insert ''first ever'' winner and more stories and roles that allows those from minority backgrounds the same careers and opportunities of their white counterparts. Lily's loss stings not because she was robbed, but rather because, will she get another shot, whereas Emma will likely continue to be given prestigious roles that fit her talent and thus allow further chances to be nominated and win. The system needs to change.
17:00 agree 100% have watched many, many Acad. Awards Ceremonies. This one made me smile; a feel good show/event. Last time I felt this good during one of these ceremonies was when Parasite and Bong Joon Ho won for director, and the wins for EEAAO. Great video by you guys, btw !!!
I’m happy for all the winners. However I hope next year there’s some sort of suspense going into Oscar night. This season became extremely predictable very fast.
To be fair, I think that was mostly more down to the films rather than the ceremony. I feel like as soon as Oppenheimer dropped and became such a hit there was no way it missing out on the major awards it did win, unless something else truly phenomenal and that could eclipse it had come out. Killers of the Flower Moon could’ve been that film but it just didn’t have that kind of momentum. Similarly, something like Poor Things was maybe just a bit too weird for general audiences.
That why emma stone wining make her cry Becase she still same audiance to in the end she dont know if she will win or lilly will be the winer But i love the rusult Not suspence but right ✔✔✔
Congrats to Emma, but all I can say is the Academy is not ready to recognize the wrongdoings against a Nation committed a century ago, nor willing to celebrate and embrace its rich cultural history and heritage. The story will always remain the same. Only chance for Native Americans and Latinas to get rewarded is to form their own guilds and separate themselves from AMPAS, which is basically a satellite organization of BAFTA.
The award should be about the best actress not best narrative. There’s a strong argument that Lily is more of a supporting actress than lead actress in the film too. Emma deserved the win this year. You’re going about solving the problem the wrong way. You should be asking for Hollywood to make more films that center around natives. It’s asking too much for one film to carry all the recognition for Native Americans. Simple truth is that Lily wasn’t the best lead actress this year, and if her representatives had campaigned her for supporting actress there’s a highly probability she would’ve swept award season because her own real competition was Da’Vine
@@Ray03595 you’re entitled to your opinion as I am entitled to mine. Lily Gladstone is leading for me, and to a lot of actors, especially the SAG voters. And yes, 96 years of academy awards history and Hollywood film history are more than enough to make a fair assessment on how Hollywood has treated, underestimated and grossly overlooked Native American and Latino performers, and shall continue to do so. So congratulations to Emma Stone for winning the White Oscars, or shall I say the BAFTA American Awards. At this point I really don’t give a damn if she and Billie Eilish get 100 Oscar’s, it’s the awards destined and expected for THEIR ethnicity anyway, they should award their own tribe. Chris Rock got it right all along.

I hope that next year they will bring this group of 5 actors again to present the categories - but I would like to see more legendary actors who are still with us (as was the case with Jessica Lange, Rita Moreno and Sally Field). Bring Meryl Streep, Julie Andrews, Cher, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Kathy Bates, Judi Dench, etc.
I've said it before I will say it again will be Gladstone was an example of category fraud. She was not a leading performer in killers of the flower Moon and 100% that is why she didn't get nominated at bafta and that is why she did not win the oscar. She should have been nominated, however then I sincerely doubt she would have beaten Divine Joy Randolph
Hey Brian - any thoughts on your favorite “Past Lives” not winning anything? It is a jewel of a film but so quiet, were the nominations the best they could hope for?
OmG did you guys watch Piers Morgan's take on the Oscars? He's saying it's like the worst line up of movies and ceremony ever. I couldn't believe it. He even acted like Oppenheimer was blah
Was happy for Boy and the Heron’s win! and Zone of Interest. I didn’t get a chance to watch KotFM or Poor Things. But from clips, I’d say I liked Gladstone’s performance more…
How could you find the best sound award to the Zone of Interest as "surprising"? For me, it was OBVIOUS that the Zone of Interest was going to win that. I mean, the sound of the Zone of Interest is literally the main character of the movie!
My final thought was that Maestro won all the Oscars it deserved. (Zero) It was doomed because it was about Bernstein, who took a wrecking ball to classical music. I posted a video on my RUclips channel titled THE BERNSTEIN EFFECT that explains how Bernstein's teachings were deigned to make pianists, composers and conductors stupid. He used the Young Peoples Concerts to dumb down the arts, ruining the way symphonies and concertos are performed. The press made him their sacred cow and slanted the coverage. I made another video about how he vandalized Beethoven's symphonies. Bad movie about a bad conductor = zero Oscars
You are amazing Brian...a few things by an addicted cinephile and award junky (myself). It's been 23/23 for me, some of what my gut was saying (thank god I was not following the latest trends) and some because of my instict prediction and not rational thought. We should finally admit that academy has changed... in a good way Best Picture: Maestro was my number 10 (was not expecting any win....Bradley should stop trying so so hard). KOTFM was my 9, I have red the book during quarantine and in my opinion they butchered it with the adaptation ( no shock it was not nominated) in comparison for example to Poor Things that McNamara followed Lanthimos vision and took it to another level, though respecting the main theme (one of my favourite books for the last 10 years) Best Sound: For me TZOI, as soon as got the best movie nomination, I was sure will get this cause for me sound is the actual leading performance. It does not just elevate it, it makes the movie. Makeup, Production, Costume: Well deserved for Poor Things. All three are crucial for the movie and made brilliantly from scratch in order to complete Bella's character and journey. Barbie's was undeniably fabulous work and definitely number 2 but for me was just recreation of the toys. Leading actress: Lilly was great, introvert subtle performance but the movie was not. It was not the screen time as her part was never the lead in book. To remind Hopkins in Silence of the Lamps. If you ask somebody how long he was screened, nobody will believe it was just 20 mins. His essence is there all the time. Emma was simply brilliant. She did something so difficult and genuine without precedent. Her performance will be remembered as a classic. I know she wanted Lilly to win but she was the performance of the decade. And finally about the whole narrative factor. I believe it has the least weight in the "new" academy and thank god for it. Maybe will be a tiebreaker between 2 equal performances, which makes me believe that Lily was not close to Emma. Excuse my very long comment...😊
Not the end Many actross lose many time And in the end win the oscar Julian more and cate winslet for example Lilly gladston white native amrican so she can play new role
@@JeekayTenn Anthony Hopkins is a veteran who has been acting for years. Lily Gladstone is a new comer. Silence of the lambs was all the rave back then, killers of the flower moon wasn't the rave this award season
I don't buy this narrative thing. If the narrative is so important for the Academy why did they wait 96 years to award an indigene actress? Or why did they wait till 2010 to award a female director? Or why did they wait till 2002 to award a black actress? Or till 2023 to award an asian actress?they didn't do this before because the narrative is not a thing for the Academy.
@Martin-gx7yu Actors and actresses don't exist in a vacuum, and no one more so than non-white actors and actresses or minorities. Hattie McDaniel is always written up in white/Anglo discourses as having won her Academy award over the very white Olivia de Havilland, as if it were an anomaly of sorts rather than as an achievement in its own right. The point is that white actors are never regarded in this fashion next to non-white or non-Anglo performers, nor are people amazed they have scored a nomination for being white (it's assumed their whiteness never plays a part although it plays a great part if you think about it; when Emma Stone won, though, those who lamented that Gladstone didn't are always told by way of rationalisation, that only the performance should matter, but that's never said about Hattie McDaniel and her win). It's just taken for granted. No one even says Emma Stone is an Anglo actress the way they say Lily Gladstone is "an indigene actress". It wasn't until the 'Oscars so white' hashtag that the narrative around the Academy awards began to change. Well, it also took Jada Pinkett's boycott in 2016 to sir things up. Then people began to see how white and male the Academy was. It still is, folks (it's shifted a bit, but not much).
Martin scoresere needs to go back to the basics. These long epic giant budget movies aint it. The Irishman and killers of the flower moon, 11 and 10 nominations, zero wins. He need to work with fresh faces also. No more deniro or leo, or pesci
Spiderverse and The Creator losing Animated Feature and VFX were my only negatives. Besides that I think I'd agree with basically every award that was won

I accepted most of the wins, but was bummed about Spider-Man ATSV not winning the Best Animated category. Even though I am a fan of Miyazaki films, I think The Boy and the Heron wasn’t his best and did not deserve the award
The Boy and The Heron winning is maybe my favorite Oscars decision of all time, never imagined the Academy could get a category so right, especially when there was such a garbage Hollywood slop alternative with the most mindless tasteless fanbase imaginable also in contention.
You can criticize Hollywood for being too reliant on established IP, but Across the Spiderverse was a masterpiece of animation. The techniques and creativity utilized in its storytelling are revolutionary.

U are acting like Gladstone has the better performance or in a better movie when the only thing going for her is that she is the first nominee of native American decent. The award should be for performance not race
I really don't get the hype around The Boy and the Heron. It, alongside Animated Short, is the most disappointing win for me. Spider-Verse did things with animation that even the first movie didn't do, and it's just overall the better movie. Boy and the Heron was nothing special in my opinion.
I should ALWAYS be about who was the best, NEVER about narrative/race/past performances. We have got to stop with “this feels like a step backward” nonsense.
Stop talking about diversity. So annoying. It's about best performance. That is why it's best actress. Not best diversity, best race, best narrative.... Cody is insufferable
@mohitrawat5225 Translation: only a white person wins fair and square, but when a non-white or non-Anglo wins, it's not merited but based on diversity. There are better ways to argue for Emma stone's win. Your sad racist drivel isn't one of them, and Stone would be the first to agree.

All of them are totally blindsided by SAG!! 😂
I luv that the SAG stats are broken!! so that no expert/pundit can be 100% sure or just default to SAG's winners next year!! 🤗
After sag lilly gladstone was still fron-runner
And she still fron runner in oscar even if she lose the oscar.
She was real threat.
She lose that mean she top two in the end.
Becase one of emma or lilly was will lose and anthor will win..
And audiance rooting not for same
Some fans to lilly and some of them to emma
Some with pafta and some with sag.
And some thing the voters vote for emma after bafta
And some thing voters give lilly voting after sag.
The fact that no one knows about Godzilla Minus One:
At the age of 25, Tatsuji Nojima became the youngest winner of the category. Probably he still doesn't know.
Suzanne M. Benson (born in 1958) for "Aliens"(1986) was probably the youngest winner
IMO, Emma's oscar win is one of the most deserved of all time.
It was
I love the pairing of both Brian and Cody. Can't wait for next year or earlier.
Yes, the work on costumes for Barbie was fantastic, but by no meaning close to the incredible job they did on Poor Things - just like the production design!!
ه 👀Poor thing and naplion was the best
But poor thing creative something not exist
Naplion they based on real history so no creative
The nomination is what’s important. All this “we have all this work to do over again.” Is bullshit.
We literally just had the first ever Asian winners last year all that doesn’t get undone because Emma Stone won this year. Tired of hearing this kind of talk.
yah right?! -- a bit of a "reset" -- come one...!
Conflicted is the right word.
Not to take anything away from Emma's triumph, just as many people felt sad about Lily's loss. They were both deserving but the sting is deep and resonates. Gladstone holding an Oscar would have been a perfect ending - worthy of a Hollywood movie.
Diversity sucks. Best actress category is for best acting. Not best tribe, best race, best feel good. Woke enough?
after emma won bafta, 4 days later final oscar voting began. so she has the momentum going in. then after 3 days of oscar voting, lily won sag. so lily has the momentum for the last 3 days of oscar voting. where as in the case of last year, after michelle yeoh won sag, 4 days later final oscar voting began. so michelle has the momentum going in for the entire 6 days of oscar voting, and i think that makes a difference between michelle winning and lily losing the oscar. the timeline for last year final oscar voting is so important that it also helps brendan fraser to win over austin butler, and jamie lee curtis to win over angela basset and kerry condon.
Thanks for another excellent video, Brian. I'm glad that you and Cody are collaborating. Keep up the great work!
She should be if she’s giving amazing performances…
It’s not her I have the problem with.
I can't even fathom Gladstone taking that Oscar over what Stone did in Poor Things.
i may the only one who thought that the sound in oppenheimer was just ok. i could barely hear any of the dialogue
that is par for the Nolan course.
Martin scorssisy problem he is always make his film funny and light sooo he in the end looose
And if he focus in lilly gladston role more leanardoo maybe she win
He foucus about criminal not about victim
Academy invite native amrican to play music and invinte themin red carpet
"People who had already won". It is not about spreading the love, but giving it to the most outstanding choice on its category.
@@frankcarlosanaliza right!!! ON!!!
These are two best friends, I love this! Brian imitated Cody perfectly. 😂 “No… Spider-Man.” 🤣
The Hurt Locker is still the last BP winner to have won in the Sound category.
Stone vs stone 🔥
You and Cody are such a great team, love their dialogues and happy there will be more collab in the future
Absolutely correct ! Well said.
Bring back ryan.
He is a cutie❤
I really enjoy the commentary with you and Cody.
That why emma stone wining make her cry
Becase she still same audiance to in the end she dont know if she will win or lilly will be the winer
But i love the rusult
Not suspence but right ✔✔✔
Congrats to Emma, but all I can say is the Academy is not ready to recognize the wrongdoings against a Nation committed a century ago, nor willing to celebrate and embrace its rich cultural history and heritage.
Poor things was awesome to look at the sets and the costumes. Emma stone was great but I struggled with the plot.
ه 👀Struggle with plot becase was fantsy story
I was hope the story was realistic
Will be realy amazing

So tired about the duel between Stone and Gladstone, especially considering that Sandra Huller was so outstanding.
I agree. Sandra Huller from Anatomy of a Fall was the best performance from last year.
I hope sooo
Amazing grup of 5😍😍😍👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏
Same cate winslet wining
But i hope with clip
Brian - U R FANTASTIC😅 I love your critiques and sense of humor.
Poor things won 3 technical awards in a row (makeup, costumes, set design) and immediately i knew emma stone was gonna win best actress
Amazing❤i was upset emma stone was in backstage that time😄
Clips over Eulogies any day!!!!!!!
But from clips, I’d say I liked Gladstone’s performance more…
You are in for such a treat when you watch Poor Things.
Seeing just clips of Poor Things doesn't do Emma Stone's performance justice
Love you!
I liked Oppenheimer but I wanted Holdovers to win all of its categories.
Love the videos, man. Keep it up!!!
We should finally admit that academy has changed... in a good way
Best Picture: Maestro was my number 10 (was not expecting any win....Bradley should stop trying so so hard). KOTFM was my 9, I have red the book during quarantine and in my opinion they butchered it with the adaptation ( no shock it was not nominated) in comparison for example to Poor Things that McNamara followed Lanthimos vision and took it to another level, though respecting the main theme (one of my favourite books for the last 10 years)
Best Sound: For me TZOI, as soon as got the best movie nomination, I was sure will get this cause for me sound is the actual leading performance.
I think if Gladstone just had 5 minute more screentime she would have won. I personally prefer Emma Stone though.
Lily lost because she wasn't the LEADING part of KOTFM .
PERIOD .
Antony Hopkins won Best Actor and he had a total screentime of 12 minutes in Silence of the Lambs.
Not the end
Many actross lose many time
And in the end win the oscar
Julian more and cate winslet for example
Lilly gladston white native amrican so she can play new role
@@JeekayTenn Anthony Hopkins is a veteran who has been acting for years. Lily Gladstone is a new comer.
Silence of the lambs was all the rave back then, killers of the flower moon wasn't the rave this award season
Exactly. People should blame Scorsese and Leo more for why she didn't win.
This is more evidence of a narrative. For ages the narrative was that only white actors deserved recognition.
Martin scoresere needs to go back to the basics. These long epic giant budget movies aint it. The Irishman and killers of the flower moon, 11 and 10 nominations, zero wins.
He need to work with fresh faces also. No more deniro or leo, or pesci
He need be more searies in film
He make comedy in tragidy story
And he make wrong screenplay
And oppnhimer was here
Spiderverse and The Creator losing Animated Feature and VFX were my only negatives. Besides that I think I'd agree with basically every award that was won
I don't understand why you guys ignored the fact that the Academy has invited so many Asian members recently.
"Godzilla" and "The Boy and Heron" were shoe in
@@お笑いヌーヴェルヴァーグLaghterneuv I understand why they won, I just don't believe they deserved it. The Boy in the Heron has a case, but there's no way Godzilla deserved to win
@@big-fish1199 Because it only costs 8 monthes, $15,000,000, 35 people. This year, nothing was visually new in any films. Instead, they evaluated the creativity. The director Takashi Yamazaki started his career as a VFX guy. He can controll everything by himself. No one else in the world can do what he does.
@@お笑いヌーヴェルヴァーグLaghterneuv Gareth Edwards is a former VFX worker too. Also it's a category judging who had the best visual effects, not who had the lowest budget. The Creator also had a small budget compared to most blockbusters, but that's not what the category is supposed to be judged upon. Also The Creator literally invented new technology to make the movie, so there were visually new things

I accepted most of the wins, but was bummed about Spider-Man ATSV not winning the Best Animated category. Even though I am a fan of Miyazaki films, I think The Boy and the Heron wasn’t his best and did not deserve the award
Christopher Nolan is a top 5 director of all time
The Boy and The Heron winning is maybe my favorite Oscars decision of all time, never imagined the Academy could get a category so right, especially when there was such a garbage Hollywood slop alternative with the most mindless tasteless fanbase imaginable also in contention.
You can criticize Hollywood for being too reliant on established IP, but Across the Spiderverse was a masterpiece of animation. The techniques and creativity utilized in its storytelling are revolutionary.

2. Emma gave the better performance

So I finally watched Poor Things based on your enthusiasm towards Emma Stone. I hate to say it, but Emma Stone is about the only thing in that movie I liked. I disliked everything else.
Kimmel has to go , terrible host.
Emma stone imo was the worst pick for best actress in her category and did the same kind of acting she got last time.
You Def didn't have to bring Cody back lolol plz stop

Brian, Luke Hearfield is a better guest, with better insight.
