Wow. What a cover. Best cover of this song I've heard to date. Gordon would have been proud to hear this. RIP Gordon, the legacy you left behind is huge and will not be forgotten.
I had never heard of Rose Cousins until clicking around for different versions of this haunting folk song from my youth. It’s so incredibly touching to see how an artist (in this case Gordon Lightfoot) has had such a profound influence on other musicians and music lovers over the course of history and geography. This song has never sounded better.
I was over having dinner at a friend's house and this cover came on his soundsystem. It immediately drew me in and took me away. I just had to focus and listen to how she was vocalizing this beautiful song, and it brought me to tears. One of the most beautiful versions of any song I've ever heard.
It's rare to be profoundly enchanted by two versions of the same song. This performance is a unicorn. I teared up. I know others did. I'll bet the late Mr. Lightfoot would too. This is the best cover of any song ever.
I discovered Rose Cousins through this CBC concert. I simply cannot believe the comments on this video criticizing her for speeding up and slowing down the lyrics. It’s called phrasing people. Something all great singers do. Would you be one of those people telling Billie Holiday to stick to the sheet music while she records All of Me? Look, I get it. Gordon Lightfoot wrote this tune and his version will always be the definitive one. But I will say this, this version made me break down and weep uncontrollably. And every time I hear it I get tears in my eyes. Gordon’s version always struck me as a bit colder and more clinical, like dissecting the end of a relationship (which was, in fact, what he was writing about). This version strikes me as more raw, closer to the actual break up event. And as for that idiot who chose to end his or her comment with something about “Whoever you are...”, I suggest checking out Rose’s original tune Freedom. First listen to the version from this CBC concert, and then check out her performance of it on a soundstage with just her guitar and her voice. Absolutely unbelievable. Her voice sends chills down my spine. To that poster I mentioned, what have you ever done to bring beauty into the world?
Cheers and thanks for engaging! The fact is, there's no accounting for taste and there's no way of predicting who's gonna get hit in the feels by one song and who it's gonna fly right by unnoticed. We're glad we had a chance to introduce Rose Cousins to you - she's so great, and best of all, she's still making music.
Her phrasing on this is absolute perfection. Stopped me in my tracks having dinner at a friend's and I just closed my eyes. Moved me like very few songs ever have.
This song started stirring my heart when I was 10 years old and still floods my eyes with tears - and this beautiful cover just enhances this feeling ❤ 😭
Holy Moly!! That was live! Jeepers Rose, you must not have to do too many takes in the studio with that voice!! Stunning. This is hands down the best cover of this song.
The troubadour once asked: "Did She Mention My Name?". Yes, at the end of Rose Cousins magnificent version of Lightfoot's masterpiece IYCRMM she mentioned his name. It gave me a pleasant jolt.
There is so much about this song that is identifiable and shouldn’t be altered, yet you did just that and made it your own. Very moving… your voice is stunning! Excellent rendition 💯💯
The first time I heard this beautiful cover I had just lost my precious friend, Phil, who I still love so very much. I had music playing in my living room while talking with a friend about him. I was really struggling with the newness of him being gone. Every time I’d start to lose it I’d get a reminder of him, usually through music. I said to my friend, “It’s as if he can read my mind.” As I spoke those words this song came on and we heard, “If you could read my mind love...” We both looked at each other and began weeping. It was heartbreaking and healing at the same time. I’ve always loved this song. I’ll always miss my friend. ❤️💔🎶
Wow...Ive loved this song from my childhood, and ive come across this ladys beautiful version by accident. I live in Australia, and have never heard of her. And then i read your comment,,, Beautifully said and so touching, and i feel your heart ache thru the words, as i too have not long lost my father, who addored this song.. Just saying...x
Mark Witham I had never heard of her until this song came on. It took my breath away. Mark, I’m so sorry for the loss of your father. I send healing thoughts to you from Texas. Strange how music has a way of carrying us through the heartaches and heartbreaks. I will now be reminded of you and your father when I hear this song. Peace and blessings to you. ♥️🎶
Mark Witham I am indeed, sir. Texas girl, born and bred. lol You’ve now got a friend in Texas! I have friends in Brisbane. I hear it’s beautiful there. 🙂

Transcription of lyrics as sung by Rose Cousins. If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet You know that ghost is me And I will never be set free As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see If I could read your mind, love What a tale your thoughts could tell Just like a paperback novel The kind the drugstores sell When you reach the part where the heartaches come The hero would be me But heroes often fail And you won't read that book again Because the ending's just too hard to take I walk away like a movie star That gets burned in a three way script Enter number two: A movie queen to play the scene Of bringing all the good things out in me But for now love, let's be real I never thought I could act this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feelin's gone And I just can't get it back If you could read my mind, love What a tale my thoughts could tell Just like an old time movie 'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well In a castle dark or a fortress strong With chains upon my feet But stories always end And if you read between the lines You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand The feelings that you lack I never thought I could feel this way And I've got to say that I just don't get it I don't know where we went wrong But the feelin's gone And I just can't get it back. Back!
Actually, as a huge Lightfoot fan and with him being one of my main influences, I thought this version was pretty good for what it is. No one matches the original Lightfoot, so why try. I thought Rose gave it a lot of feeling.
That is exactly right and no one should try to imitate Gord. Some of the people who cover his songs are so atrocious and I've no idea why they dare put themselves into position to show off their obvious failure at imitation.
A very beautiful cover of this song! The only part I didn't like was how rushed I felt she sang the lyrics. Of course, its her own version of the song, but I personally like to saver hearing the lyrics which is why I love this song for more than just the beautiful melody.
Seriously, one of the most beautiful, emotive covers I've heard in years. This lady is quite stunning in every facet of musicianship.
So well said...bless you
Binging on Gordon (RIP) and I come across this masterpiece. Music is magic.
Wow. What a cover. Best cover of this song I've heard to date. Gordon would have been proud to hear this. RIP Gordon, the legacy you left behind is huge and will not be forgotten.
One of the most remarkable covers I've ever heard, of the most remarkable songs out there.
Absolutely. Exquisite.
Ebb and flow, cadence, intonation, simply beautiful. Brilliant interpretation and performance. Love it.
Rose, you stir my soul and I cried for the first in many years, I think you found my soul for me. Thank you darling. Dave
70 years old with tears in my eyes. This lady is wonderful! Never heard of her but you can bet I'll be exploring more of her music.
Songs are born to fly and live on in new and interesting ways and Rose does this song justice.
Wow, so beautiful. Rose has such an amazing voice. Such heart and feeling. 😍🤩

This came on at a friend's place and it stopped me in my tracks. While he made dinner I closed my eyes and felt every word for the first time.
Those moments when music stops us in our tracks are unforgettable. Glad it resonated with you! 🎶✨
Brilliant. Loyal AND deconstructed. How the hell does that happen. The work of two geniuses.
Brilliant cover never heard it done better!
Any covers done of the equally superb Jimmy Webb
Very impressive musician❤

I find a song can sound awkward when a singer is ahead of the beat. In the groove or slightly behind the groove feels more comfortable to me.
Her phrasing on this is absolute perfection. Stopped me in my tracks having dinner at a friend's and I just closed my eyes. Moved me like very few songs ever have.
And you criticize Gordon’s version as a bit colder and more clinical. What a hypocrite..

Just utterly wonderful. I`m blown away !!!!!!!!!!
A beautiful and haunting version of…what is already an amazing song. I guarantee Gordo would approve!

There are about a thousand covers of this song on YT. This one is really beautiful.
Wooof her voice just cracked me right open. My god that’s a beautiful rendition
I'm literally fucking crying listening to this. What a song, what a rendition!
My compliments. You have shown respect, and dear Ms. Cousins, you have done it with much talent. All the best to you.
She is the only person who should be allowed to cover this profoundly emotional song. She did Gordon proud with this version!
This song is one of the best reasons to wish for immortality. I wouldn't wanna miss it on my funeral
Absolutely beautiful
I’m speechless. Wow. Not since Eva Cassidy has a cover moved me so deeply.
Eva was the Queen.... 💖
I feel the same way.
Oh my gosh! Goosebumps! What a cover! She really did Gordon's song justice.
even made it her own
Rose, this is simply fabulous. I have not wiped my eyes in a long time.

I like it. It's a different but heartfelt interpretation.
I listen to this song and it makes me cry...every time
I have never cried so much. The cover hits more than the original. A beautiful cover.
No. The original is the masterpiece
The original is the best for me,
You have to admit...This is coming straight from her ❤️!
"Coming Straight from the Heart" ~ Bryan Adams
The last time when she sings "With chains upon my feet" my eyes fill up with tears. Awesome cover!
My husband and I will be seeing her tomorrow night for my birthday. Looking forward to it. :)
That is great. Enjoy the show and happy birthday! :)

Beautiful! Saw you in Atlin last summer and love you :~)
Very nice! Her voice and overall style reminds me so much of Carly Simon.
That intro had me like, it's Kenny Rogers' 'Lady" :).
Beuatiful performance.

Transcription of lyrics as sung by Rose Cousins.
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
You know that ghost is me
And I will never be set free
As long as I'm a ghost that you can't see
If I could read your mind, love
What a tale your thoughts could tell
Just like a paperback novel
The kind the drugstores sell
When you reach the part where the heartaches come
The hero would be me
But heroes often fail
And you won't read that book again
Because the ending's just too hard to take
I walk away like a movie star
That gets burned in a three way script
Enter number two:
A movie queen to play the scene
Of bringing all the good things out in me
But for now love, let's be real
I never thought I could act this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back
If you could read my mind, love
What a tale my thoughts could tell
Just like an old time movie
'Bout a ghost from a wishin' well
In a castle dark or a fortress strong
With chains upon my feet
But stories always end
And if you read between the lines
You'll know that I'm just tryin' to understand
The feelings that you lack
I never thought I could feel this way
And I've got to say that I just don't get it
I don't know where we went wrong
But the feelin's gone
And I just can't get it back. Back!
2:49, if that doesnt send shivers down your spine, you need some time to re find yourself.
Spectacular
This is beautiful.
Awesome cover
Great voice.

De vez en cuando el algoritmo da en el clavo. Hermoso cover de esta bella cancion, RIP Gordon. Does anybody know what key she's playing it in?

bravissima
A competent version of a great song can’t fail! Not my very favourite version, but definitely well over a pass mark
this is what I'm talkin bout.
The point is that she is reinterpreting this song, not covering it...thus the stunningly different, jazz-like phrasing.
It as MAMM!!
I don’t like how she winds up and down with the tempo. But I do like how she suspends each line
Fkn' A!
We lost Gordon Lightfoot today :(
