Thanks for posting man! I’m a jazz drummer and I have a love for jazz piano. Problem is I have never understood how great jazz pianists play the melody, bass and harmonies between the two hands when playing solo piano.
I remember when as a kid my teacher told me I had to play both hands together, and I said that's not possible. Well with practice you eventually learn to do it...it just amounts to putting in consistent and diligent practicing...but there's rewards along the way.
For sure man. My main obstacle is that I got in the habit of just playing through lead sheets with the melody in the right hand with a single note and then the chord in the left hand just straight up 1,3,5,7 haha. Sounds alright but nothing like what you do.
I'm so happy to have 'discovered' these 3 rhythm techniques to go with my playing for Blue Moon. Yay ! Took the mystery out of rootless voicings as I went on to practise. Gave me much more freedom of choices. Thank you !

Well, Kent, I have a pile of binders with alphabetical tabs containing piles of songs accumulated thru the years for which I have typed the lyrics, put the song in my key, and notated the chords above the lyrics (because I can sing them) songs include anything from Autumn Leaves and Misty to Hallelujah to Dark Eyes to Hello Dolly, Rainbow, Memories (most I can play by memory) so I have spent a few (thousand) hours practicing; but I’m at an impasse cuz I can’t get beyond my own simplistic style (which people think is great, but haha I know better) so my dilemma is What to Practice (John Thompson classical type to train my fingers?) I actually play all songs top down so melody in right hand and arpeggiated 10ths or baby stride in left. Seems I should go for learning jazz chords in left hand so my right is free to improvise: so where would I start with your packages???

Thanks for a great lesson! I'd like to try the Block Chords with rootless voicings. I always thought I had to play the root when playing solo. I just want to say, I really like your style and arrangement. It just sounds so nice!

+cocovi Right! Sometimes I miss seeing some questions. I think I was using open 7ths, 3rds, and 10ths in the LH with Donna Lee, which is a complex melody. On this video in technique #3, as you can see, I'm using mostly rootless voicings because the melody is much simpler, so you can focus more on the LH.
+Kent Hewitt Hi Kent, I pulled up this video and "Misty" and have them in side by side tabs on my browser (Firefox). This Blue Moon video is stretched, and only shows 2.5 octaves up from Middle C. Misty looks "normal," and shows 3.5 octaves up from Middle C. Both show 2.5 octaves below Middle C. Misty has irrelevant, harmless and non-bothersome black borders on each side. Blue Moon does not, I assume, due to the stretching, but the price is the distortion. I think the non-stretched is better, as it shows more of the keyboard and looks far more natural. When I bought my monitor (a 24" Dell that I generally use in portrait mode, rotated so that it is taller than it is wide - which shows a gigantic, full page of a "Real Book" lead sheet), I learned about why computer monitor aspect ratios have gradually shifted in the last few years from 5:4 (nearly rectangular), then to 16:10 [standard on laptops a few years ago and what my new Dell is (hard to find...)], and now to the current 16:9, which is "Widescreen." It has nothing to do with computers. It's because of "economy of scale," that famous "Economics 101" term! The same companies that actually manufacture the screens also make televisions, where people like to watch movies and sports and where a "wide screen" is beneficial. It's dreadful for computers, however (except maybe for a DAW). Much of the screen real estate is wasted in 16:9 - a lead sheet only fills up to about 2/3 the available vertical space. Same for any Microsoft "Word" documents - you can't see much of the 8.5 by 11, standard piece of digital "paper." But it's obviously cheaper for the manufacturers to just miniaturize their widescreen t.v.s for laptops, etc. Even cell phones suffer from this (e.g., the current Galaxy S6 is way taller than my3 year old Galaxy S3). The cats at the Microcenter Store said that, due to demand, they are coming out with a 5:4 Surface Pro. The 4 is already a little squarer than the 3. My vote is to revert to non-stretching and leave the black space on the sides. Others may have a different view, of course. However, with Pot Player (see below), the video can be easily made bigger (to fill the whole screen) without changing the aspect ratio of the video - no stretching needed. DAUM POT PLAYER - it's free..... I discovered a fantastic video player that permits all sorts of tweaking of videos: Daum Pot Player. Don't like black spaces on the sides of piano videos? Just press "x" and the video occupies more of the screen. Repeat to make bigger, press "c" to make smaller. Out of sight! SPEED CONTROL: Unlike Moo Tube's speed control (which is limited to .5, .25 [the latter has no sound]), Pot Player's speed control is infinite - so I can play your videos in 74%, 40%, whatever fits best, to really see what you're doing (all with sound)! Every single other aspect of videos can be tweaked with this thing - I assume, including, the aspect ratio. It's great!

Is there a simple explanation as to finding the mode or scale that goes with a particular chord in order to use the notes in that mode or scale for improvisation.
I just love your videos, they really tune my mind on jazz, if that sounds correct in English:) But there's a little problem with the aspect ratio(?) which makes your videos smaller than size of the screen. (For example, this video can be expanded: ruclips.net/video/6lXRj0hjHcM/видео.html ) It is not a big problem, but thing is, I try watching your channel by my table sitting at the piano, which (tablet) is quite small, so small size of video makes it very hard to see. I hope I was able to properly formulate what I wanted.

Most of the time I use the standard setting because no one has told me of this problem. Usually You Tube will send me a notice if the screen needs to be expanded. Do you have a black border around the edges? When I view my videos on a standard size computer they fill up the whole screen. It apparently is a problem with your device and the fact that the videos were created using standard rather than widescreen. Standard may have a more accurate look and widescreen might be distorted. I'll watch out for that on my next video and hope you'll tell me how it looks. Unfortunately that Amazing Chords video was created quite a few months ago and it seems to be missing in my videos folder. You're the 1st person that has told me this.

I guess that you originally shoot your videos in 1280/720 (HD), but then during editing in Movie Maker, it crops into 960/720 with black upper and lower borders. They look better on a square screen or a larger tablet. There is a problem viewing them on smaller rectangle shaped screens. I haven't had any complaints about that until you. I can try making my next video on wide screen.
