I think Roglic may come to regret easing off and allowing Pogacar to regain time he lost on the echelon day.I also think Pogacar doesn't need a strong team because he is always next to Roglic on the road so he is basically a 9th member of the Jumbo team!!!
Ye, he's taking as much advantage of all of them as Roglic is, they should rely deny him that wheel... but well I don't know of any legal ways of preventing someone from taking your wheel ;)
You need a strong team for when things don't go so smoothly. What will happen if he's by himself up a hill and has a mechanical problem? or if he needs a quick bike change and no one is there to give him their bike? That is the reason why the Tour winners usually have a strong team backing them up, and protecting them.
I don't know if Pogacar will win. I hope he does, because he's such an exciting racer. He seems to race with his heart, not his numbers. It would be an awesome feat. One for the ages. Come on young fella!
The problem with a concussion on the Tour is that it's very difficult to figure out what to do with a GC rider. If you're a sprinter/domestique or going for stage victories, your overall time doesn't matter, and you could simply be tested for a concussion, even if that takes 30 minutes, and then simply be given 30 extra minutes to finish the race if you pass the protocol. You're probably already down an hour or more on the GC, so that doesn't matter, and you'll be good to go for the next stage. But if you're a GC rider, you can't really stop the race for them and they won't want to give up their GC hopes, so it's very difficult.
The tour has been awesome this year. Well worth the wait . I always thought July was the time to visit France. But France looks amazing in September too!
A reasonable concussion protocol for TdF might be - if a rider crashes and has any head impact they get removed from the stage - if they clear an independent concussion protocol - they should be given the time for that stage of the peloton and allowed to ride the next stage. If they fail the protocol they would be removed from the race. The problem arises when determining IF they had a head impact and more complicated still is that you can be concussed without direct head impact. So who/how will it be decided to pull someone to test?
ed wouldn’t this be potentially a big competitive advantage for a non-concussed rider? The Bardet crash, for example, happened quite early in the stage. If he checked out ok, he’d be starting the next day having been spared 90k of riding and however many meters of ascent vs the rest of the field. You can imagine the outcry if he wins that next stage. You could even see some elaborate shenanigans to try and take advantage of such a rule, along the lines of those rugby players who reacted to a rule allowing a substitution only for a bleeding player by purposely cutting themselves so as to make a tactical substitution... The only possible solution I could see would be some sort of equivalent to the yellow flag in auto racing to force the peloton to wait for a rider to go through a proper check, but that may not be feasible either...
There must be some means of putting an accelerometer in the helmet. This is combination with other factors would give a true go/no go threshold. This reduces the possibility of a rider who is having a bad day deliberately falling to get a GC time. They have live monitoring of heart rate, watts, cadence etc. There must be a way.
@@gregbrown1311 i think it will be the same as sportscar racing in the 1950s. The cars were way faster due to ww2 technology. But, they were still driving on medieval roads. After several ghastly accidents, road racing was banned.
I was concerned for Bardet after his crash and completely understood his reaction to get back on the bike. I remember a concussion I got from playing 5-a-side football with a few guys from work and after a while I got up and took myself out of the game but I had no hesitations of cycling back home when I lived with my parents. I didn't cycle per se, I just slowly glided down the road and occasionally pedalled but I occasionally got migraine pains and other pains so I didn't force myself. I didn't think anything of it back then but my own health concerns now and watching Bardet struggle, it sort of put it in perspective. Saying more needs to be done is true but the complexity of the multiple situations that occur in professional cycling makes it difficult to make any sort of progress. There was the doctor who came out and said that if it was a game of rugby it would be easier to take them out of the game whereas with Tour de France and cycling, the medical car could be blocked from making way due to other team cars being in front and other cyclists as well. I was going to put forward one idea but then recognised that that would have problems for a race as well so I don't know how it can be fixed other than we marvel at their bravery and stupidity.
Dan, you're spot-on regarding crashing and getting back on your bike. Did that on my way home from work about 5 years ago. Took a week for me to get sensible and see a doctor. Broken bone in my hand. There's macho and there's stupid, and a fine line divides them.
Re concussion: Right now teams would much rather a rider carry on with concussion and pull them after the stage, Than pull a rider during the stage for a concussion only for it to turn out later that they dont have one. This need to change and flip the other way to make the sport safer. Also I think they should have force meters fitted in the riders helmets and if they hit there head above a certain force the commissars pull them from the race automatically, just to be safe and prevent anyone from ever carrying on with a concussion!
I think Pogacar will win. He just sat down and pedaled at the end of stage 15 while everybody was standing up for more power. He picked the correct moment to attack before the finish line showing the best instinct. When he finally stood up, he exploded past Rogluc for the win. I also remember Roglic looking more effortless than Pogacar on a different stage win.... ITs hard to tell, but Pogacar seems more confident than anybody I have ever seen and just goes for it...
Watching the Giro Rosa I was surprised at some of the dodgy roads the girls were riding on...gravel is gravel, but some of the tarmac was dreadful. For the premier girls race, this had me scratching my head on a number of occasions. They unquestionably deserve better😐
I used to see athletes getting emotional as being weak, now I realize that they put so much effort into their training that it is just the accumulation of the near overwhelming cost of putting forth such efforts.
This will be the third consecutive Tour with a first-time winner and on the question of Tadaj, would he really take the win over his countryman? That might be a heavy crown to carry. So I don't think so--more stage wins, sure, and if Primoz falters big time, sure. But to do something contrary to Primoz, I don't see it as he has been riding with the benefit of Jumbo Visma and the young rider's jersey is his and a one-two finish would be beautiful for the sport and their nation.
Watching this video after the time trial. GCN nailed it!!! Just hope Pogacar doesn't test positive for covid tonight. that is the only twist that will beat the day of surprise.
Slovenian TT championship was before Pogačar and Roglič Tour preparation. Roglič didn't make any intervals longer than 4 minutes before the TT so that result isn't showing realistic picture. Last valid TT in my opinion was on last years Vuelta where Roglič bear Pogačar by 1:29. I think TT on this years Tour will be decided by fatique factor which will be in favour of Roglič. Pogačar spent a lot of energy in mountain stages so if he wins the tour it will be one for the books 😁😁😁.
Shame Richie Porte missed out on a mention. He’s in good form and finally without illness or injury. Doubt he can beat the Slovenians without some misfortune on their part, but he’s a good shot for a Grand Tour podium. He also missed a mention in the transfers - leaving Trek next year, probably for Ineos.
Great racing news summary Dan. Tadej Podacar is Jumbo-Visma's unofficial 9th rider...riding their train consistently. If there is going to be an upset, it will come from him. Jumbo-Visma should be concerned, very concerned 😐
I don't know if Tadej can win, but I sure hope he does. As impressive as Jumbo-Visma has been, it would be much more impressive for Pogacar to win with much less help from his team than Roglic winning with so much talent behind (or more like ahead) of him.
And now I almost feel bad for Roglic. But such an impressive feat from Pogacar. Yellow jersey, 3 stage wins, including that dominant TT, and even the polka dot too. And at that age. Unbelievable.
On a bike commute I got hit by a car at pretty slow speed, and your description of the feelings and adrenaline are spot on. I got back on and started for work. Turns out I had a cracked rib and holy cow, it started hurting so badly a mile later. Still, I finished the 3 remaining miles to work slightly uphill. Not smart, but cyclists seem to be just a bit nuts sometimes.
I really feel for poor Romain Bardet, and hope he's not going to suffer any long-term repercussions from having been allowed to continue. I had a knock to the head 7 years ago in a non-cycling accident but was allowed to continue on my very leisurely way. A day later bad post-concussion syndrome emerged, and lasted over a year. It's caused constant tinnitus too: knocks to the head need to be taken seriously, even without loss of consciousness. Dan, you're spot on with the complexity of making the decision in the heat of the moment, particularly with the implications for the team. Two stumbles before getting back on his bike is rather tell-tale though.
@8:37 Concussions are a retrospective clinical diagnosis. They are not revealed by "brain scan" aka CT or MRI. In the context of trauma, imaging like that would only serve to reveal a bleed or fracture. Baseline testing can be of use, but presents the issue of requiring 30-45 min off the bike after the incident.
With regards to the concussion situation, my view is that any rider suspected of concussion should be assessed by the independent race doctor. If they fail the concussion assessment protocol then that’s it- race over. If they pass then they should complete the stage and be given the same time as the group or nearest group they were with when they crashed. It’s not a perfect solution but it removes any disadvantage of a time loss due to being assessed.
jumbo will carry Roglic to the victory, but watch out for Tadej when he gets a real team around him. So great to see Sam Bennett showing Peter who's faster. Real heart and emotion, not just a nice pair of glasses and hair !
TJV is strong & UAE has lost some powerful riders Aru, & Formolo, to help, Pogacar. So that said , win goes to Roglic. IMO. Still look for Pogacar at the Giro de Italia!
The young kid has a lot of natural talent. He may be able to pull off a TdF win on his own but I think he'll be overwhelmed by the experience and power of Jumbo Visma. I'd give the youngster a chance if he had a strong experienced team around him.
I like to cite Greg LeMond making his comeback in 1989, riding for ADR in the Tour, up against Systeme U and the mighty Laurent Fignon. ADR were admittedly a pretty ordinary team but Greg just followed the best wheels in the business and raced smart. That year, 1989, featured a last stage TT, which Greg won by 8 seconds, but the fact is, IF Pogacar does take a goodly chance of time our of Primoz in the TT, and takes yellow by 30 plus seconds, I doubt Jumbo will be able to get rid of him, he'll be sticking like Elmer's to Roglic.
I was surprised to see Pogacar had pipped Roglic in the National time Trials, This race is definitely not over. Pogacar is very strong. Chris Horner had an interesting take on the concussion situation. (If I heard it correctly). I remember the incident. this has been a great race so far and I have enjoyed watching it.
I understand Bardet, crashed quite badly to work once, worked 10 hours in the scorching heat on a very busy terrace and the next day I found out I had a pretty bad concussion.
Ineos brought the wrong team, simple as that.. They should have gone for Thomas instead of Carapaz, letting the first play along with Bernal, who could've easily reverted to an assist role by now, for the Welsh rider.. And they should've let Carapaz defend its Maglia Rosa, maybe assisted by Froome. Now they have 1 main rider (unusually) with Bernal, with all the weight on its shoulders, and a not-so-happy Carapaz to assist.. Anyway, I am rooting for Pogacar, I really hope he can attack next week and keep the yellow to Paris!
How about doing a video about the team logistics for a one day race/monument? How do the teams get the gear / rider there, do the race, and then get everything back "home"?
Regardless of what happens between Pogacar and Roglič I am so pleased with those couple of extraordinary efforts that put a few of these guys in the lead. I am still scratching my head about Ineos putting all of their eggs in one basket and not have 3 TDF winners work together to take all three podium spots on the GC. Someone explain this to me, please.
Jumbo Visma's team must not chase the breakaways because when ever they chase it seems like they are indirectly working in the favour of pogacar Sepp should have allowed to attack first for winning stage 15 , as a result pogacar would have followed him and Roglic can easily sat on Pogacar wheel and can make a fight one against two which would be something fruitful.
As far as Bardet goes, I'm not sure if the teams or the officials have access to the video footage, but when he stumbled two times that was a very bad sign.
@@jondenekamp2396 You are right. It was plain as day. Two of his teammates were standing right there watching him fall. he should have been removed from the race at that point.
@@razzwilmz7970 Yes, but who knows when anyone saw that, right? It's easy for us to say that with the luxury of replay, but someone should have known better.
I want Pogachar to win simply because I want someone who has won a stage (or two!) at the top, not just Mr Consistency machine. However, I think Roglic will win, because UAE, as a team, is not a competitor for JV.
Come to think of it if Pogacar wins, he'll be taking 3 jerseys, yellow, white and polka-dot. Yeah nice and he'll be the youngest rider to win the tour even younger than Bernal, and not to mention the first Slovenian rider to do so.😲😲
You have to know something about Slovenian time trial nationals..Pogacar swaped bikes for a normal bike mid way because there was a hill called Pokljuka, which is 6km long at grafient at 8%. Roglic on the other hand was riding the whole time trial on his time trial bike. So yes Pogacar beat Roglic but...
I know Roglic can win Le Tour, for 1. no one has been able to drop him. (He is the champion of Slovenia don't forget.) Let Pogacar try and attack, Jumbo's team is strong enough to chase him down albeit Tom Domoulin or Sepp Kuss. 2. I believe they are great friends, how selfish would it look if Roglic took the Road and Time Trial races of Slovenia. In this case where it's for all the marbles I don't think Pogacar can beat Roglic in the Time Trial, much less take any time on stage 20. 3rd and final, Jumbo will know not to sacrifice all the domestiques pressuring Pogacar to make a move/follow. ok- you guys caught me, I am a huge fan of Jumbo-Visma:)
9:27 Can't get doored if you ride outside the door zone IN the traffic lane instead, safest spot to be, never been doored all these years because I don't go there in the door zone, simple enough!
Primož lost chronometer stage for less than 9 s, but Tadej lost national stage for 10 s, TDF stage 17 show that Lopez can be dangerous also, but we will be in yellow at the end. #goslovenia

Well Done Dan! Your analysis was spot on! Brilliant!
If it weren’t for Pogacar, it would probably be over. I’m glad he’s making it exciting. Along with the fact Bora keeps blowing up the field.

TJV is strong & UAE has lost some powerful riders Aru, & Formolo, to help, Pogacar. So that said , win goes to Roglic. IMO. Still look for Pogacar at the Giro de Italia!
Yup, maybe. He's in my fantasy league team so Dopey hopes so.
Imagine pogacar whit a strong team🤯
I was surprised to see Pogacar had pipped Roglic in the National time Trials, This race is definitely not over. Pogacar is very strong. Chris Horner had an interesting take on the concussion situation. (If I heard it correctly). I remember the incident. this has been a great race so far and I have enjoyed watching it.
Pete Sis Roglic didn’t train for the national TT.. he’ll be flying on Saturday
I understand Bardet, crashed quite badly to work once, worked 10 hours in the scorching heat on a very busy terrace and the next day I found out I had a pretty bad concussion.
More likely Tour of slovenia 😂
Agreed...but I'm definitely NOT complaining.
It's been awesome so far.
We needed a new battle.
Prophetic.
I believe Egan Bernal is ill. His form on the Grand Colombier looked like someone just beginning the cycling season in January. 🤔
Pogo Car can do it!
Pogačar or Roglic winning TDF? For us Slovenians these are sweet problems...
Definitly YES!!!!
Love that Irish Shamrock on his maillot.
In the end, we'll find out who wins: the stronger team vs. the stronger rider.
I bet this goes down to the time trial in stage 20.
If pogacar wins, how young a Cyclist can be to get the yellow jersey? Is definitively the TdF a young lads game?
Bardet's wobble brought to mind Toms Skujiņš' after his crash in the Tour of California a few years ago (tho not as scary).
Jumbo Visma's team must not chase the breakaways because when ever they chase it seems like they are indirectly working in the favour of pogacar
Sepp should have allowed to attack first for winning stage 15 , as a result pogacar would have followed him and Roglic can easily sat on Pogacar wheel and can make a fight one against two which would be something fruitful.
As far as Bardet goes, I'm not sure if the teams or the officials have access to the video footage, but when he stumbled two times that was a very bad sign.
What do you mean stumbled?
I mean he fell straight down on his ass two times in a few seconds. Watch the replay.
Kill the background music.
He fucking WON :DDD
I want Pogachar to win simply because I want someone who has won a stage (or two!) at the top, not just Mr Consistency machine. However, I think Roglic will win, because UAE, as a team, is not a competitor for JV.
Haha roglic has also won a stage remember?
loydies pfessial experinced view much appreciated
Come to think of it if Pogacar wins, he'll be taking 3 jerseys, yellow, white and polka-dot. Yeah nice and he'll be the youngest rider to win the tour even younger than Bernal, and not to mention the first Slovenian rider to do so.😲😲
Rooting for visma to win this TF
Chris Froome won 2013, I think you mean 2014 👍 it’s ok dan, you’re still the man
Bora is tuning up for Vuelta and Giro. They could contend GC podium spots if Sagan is absent.
Nice watch. GCN making it rain....
Pogacar ? Not yet! Roglic will win!
Disco Pogo is going to win it!
In this case where it's for all the marbles I don't think Pogacar can beat Roglic in the Time Trial, much less take any time on stage 20. 3rd and final, Jumbo will know not to sacrifice all the domestiques pressuring Pogacar to make a move/follow.
ok- you guys caught me,
I am a huge fan of Jumbo-Visma:)
9:27 Can't get doored if you ride outside the door zone IN the traffic lane instead, safest spot to be, never been doored all these years because I don't go there in the door zone, simple enough!
HE ALREADY WON!
Primož lost chronometer stage for less than 9 s, but Tadej lost national stage for 10 s, TDF stage 17 show that Lopez can be dangerous also, but we will be in yellow at the end. #goslovenia
I've predicted the winner every year since 2015. Primoz will win.
Yeah he just faded away on the end of the tour because he had no team behind. This year he has.. well...Jumbo support :D
Those winners were all fairly predictable 😉. It’s the TDF though, anything can happen.
I do like your prediction. I hope for Primoz that you are right. He seems deserving.
I wonder how the death of Nicholas Portal (RIP) has affected INEOS. It must have been dreadful for those guys since his passing.
I would predict he will win it at the time trial by being about 2 mins faster then Roglic!
