    Dave, this video is gold! I found your video a month or so ago and have watched it countless times (and countless more, I'm sure) as I figure out exactly how to make my own repeating patterns. I assure you I would never have figured this out myself. Thank you so much!

    Dude, you just blew my mind with the Affine panel. I literally yelled out loud, “WHAT!!”. I’ve been looking for pattern making and most tutorials have been in Affinity Designer, this was very informative and interesting. Thank you for sharing, great work my man!

    Regardless of what app you use to do this, you can place your Photo document into Affinity Publisher, duplicate it to get your tile, and then each time you save your file it'll update there so you can see the tiled result.

    Thank you for the great video, no other videos, were covering this topic well. I have been using adobe photoshop for years and am thinking of changing to affinity photo, I am a fabric pattern designer and could not find the easy menu command that says "create pattern" as in PS....i usually use the command "offset" to split my design as you showed on your video, and then i want to see if there are any pixel lines showing in the repeat, so I create a new doc and fill with pattern...is there a way to achieve this quick pattern fill? to check my design.

      Not sure if I know exactly what you mean, but my guess is to try the Affine filter, under the Distort group.

    Nice tutorial Dave!
    This is a great start but the design could be a little more organic. I'd take this a step further and create a final image of 4 tiles, two of which are offset by 50% on either the X or Y to stagger the repetition and make it less square. The other thing you can do is rotate the elements slightly in each for some more variation. I'd then add some extra little variation into each of the 4.
    I'll be giving this a go myself now. Thanks for the inspiration!

    Do you have any information on how to do a half-drop in your vast repertoire of videos and knowledge? I'm stumped.

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey 2 года назад +1

      I've tried to do half-drops with the Affine filter but it takes some nuanced tweaking. If I'm doing a half-drop, I'm usually doing it manually, but I use the process in this video first, and then negotiate the drop.

    Hello. I have only recently become acquainted with making patterns on AffinityPhoto and I work only on my iPad in Affinity--not on desktop. Yet. I needed something that would allow me to import my watercolor illustrations. Adobe Illustrator gets too bogged down and crashes. I do not have Photoshop. That said, I have made some patterns but they don't work when I load them up to Spoonflower. The files look good on the PNG file but... So when you were talking, you mentioned: "rasterize and clip." Could that be what the hangup is? I have invisible junk in my margins? I have the same problem in Adobe Illustrator but I am told the process is very different. ALSO, is it possible to do a half-drop in Affinity Photo?

    • @DaveConrey
      @DaveConrey 2 года назад +1

      This one is kind of tough to answer without looking at the actual file, but if your document has stuff invisible in the margins, it could be throwing off your final output in someway, or it’s not accurately lining up because your image isn’t proportional. I’m guessing at that, but I assume that’s the case.
      As far as half drop, in affinity photo of there is a filter called AFFINE which can help with this but I have struggled to get it to work accurately, so you may have to do it by hand. I am going to be doing a Q&A video next week, maybe I can tackle that one.

    • @cassbaker674
      @cassbaker674 2 года назад

      @@DaveConrey Thanks so much for your reply. Yeah, I am beginning to think it may be proportions too. I am going to set aside a day where I can do experiments until I get it right. As for a half drop, I am really beginning to see a need for it because the repeat is so bleeding obvious when I look at my work. I will be glad to see your next video. Much appreciation for what you do.

    • @cassbaker674
      @cassbaker674 2 года назад

      @@DaveConrey I figured it out. As I suspected, it was operator error on my part. It makes so much sense now. I was uploading the test file to Spoonflower instead of what I call the swatch file that really is the repeat. In Affinity Photo, I usually end up with three files-- the working file where you MAKE your pattern--the PNG you export from the working file or the “SWATCH” file for lack of a term to call it, and then the test file which also is a PNG to make sure there are no mishaps in your pattern before you show it to the world. I only needed to upload the swatch--NOT the test. In my defense, I was thinking from a Procreate point of view where you CAN upload the test as well as the working file to a POD site. Now I have to figure out how to get my Adobe patterns to cooperate. Wait’ll I get GOING! : )
