hey.....she's not bad. quite good. i had to see the clip, to see if it was THE 'ashlee simpson'; watching this, i was reminded that, yeah, pop career & fiascos aside, she'd started out in acting; this will give her a lot of cred, and it shows she's actually got a great voice.
I agree Adina DOES have true talent, that's why I was so disappointed with her album, I was expecting it to sound more like Sarah Bareilles but it sounds kinds sh*ty honestly. Ashlees voice sounds way better now than it did when she was 20. What I see in this clip is actually very impressive it's hard to dance in front of a live audience while singing on key and on time. Good Job Ashlee.
Wow. This is actually excellent. Not a wrong note in the entire song. And the acting was spot on. And she modelled her accent off Renee Zelwegger's oscar-winning performance, so it can't have been that bad :P I'm convinced she can now sing. Just not pop music ;)
this movie and play was great! i have yet to see ashlee in the show but i wish her much luck in her career i met her once and she was a very sweet girl. seeing her on melrose place was cool too it was nice to see her back out there. in my opinion i loved her since i was 10 i had the biggest crush on her, i loved her reality show, and we lived in the same apartment building. I really do wish her luck with what lies next in her career!
I call them a show, or a musical, but that depends for other people if it's a play. I think she honestly just calls them that, and is assuming she's on Broadway, though she's in the West End.
I think that, too, Attentionstarved. She is great and damn that girl can sing. I don't understand why people keep talking bad things about her, this video proves that she has an amazing, original and powerful voice and that she can sing live. I don't see why people write stupid things about someone they don't even know, there are more important things in life....
Well that's the business and that's something people who choose to be in the business have to deal with. No use in complaining because it's not going to change. It's been that way for years
I'm not going to lie, I didn't think she could do it until I saw it just now!!! She is awesome and has come a long way since I first heard her belt out in the recording studio on her show!!!
I agree with Collectablerent. Its like they just want the big names so they can drag in the cash. Its like its not about actual talent anymore. I'm a dancer and I'v done many shows and it's always been about the show and making it amazing. It takes way more effort, time, energy and talent than I can see in Ashlee. For some reason I doubt you'd (muli) understand that.
Wait...I am a performer too. I have done auditions and been rejected just like everybody else. So don't tell me I don't understand. I'm just saying that we can't change the way it is. The stars get the part so the producers can get the money and that's the way it is. We can't change it by complaining. And whether we think she's good or not people are going to go see her and she's going to make money. Whether it's right or wrong is irrelevant because that's the way it is.
I HATE when famous people are given Broadway roles just because they are famous NOT because they are talented! Broadway performers are talented and far superior to most any recording artist because they do it live with out mixers making em' sound good!!
I think the implication here was that she referred to Broadway in the improper sense. She should've said "It's such a great Broadway PLAY," or "PRODUCTION", etc.
I figured it out. There's no sense of abandon in her performance. She points to her nose, and mugs, and all that because that was what she was told to do, but she's so restrained. There's no "grr" or raunch or reckless abandon. She's standing in her little square and she's not moving an inch outside of it. I know this was a few years ago so I hope she's improved.
Not as terrible as I would've thought. Remember that the role of Roxie Hart is NOT to be the great singer-dancer that Velma Kelley is, but rather, a wannabe with guts. So in that sense, Simpson may have hit it on the nose. Granted, she's no Tony- winner or has B-way experience, but I will give her credit for trying.
note: this was on the west end, not broadway. and i saw this production at this theater, but im glad i saw a no-name and not ashlee simpson, i bet she lip syncs.
If you went to see this play and you didn't know who Ashlee Simpson was you wouldn't be sat here calling the poor girl a terrible singer. She's not that bad!
Something I don't get... Ashlee Simpson was a trained Ballerina, she had something ridiculous like 15 years of dancing, even went to school for it... Then why the fuck is she so unexceptional? She could have done better....
Hahahaha, everytime she called musicals "broadways" I flinched but oh well. I mean her sister did ask, "is it chicken or is it fish" so you know...that's not really as bad. :) And while she may not be like some of the other broadway greats, she doesn't do a bad job. I actually think she got the persona of roxie hart and she sounded much better than some of her record songs...
I see all sorts of character. If you know anything about Ashlee you would know that Roxie is not her. Who are you to say what pop stars know about broadway. It's like saying "NO IDINA YOU CAN'T COME OUT WITH AN ALBUM YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT BEING A POP STAR!!!"
i mean, shes ok, i like her, but when i read on her myspace she was going to be playing roxie hart, ummm, no. Seeing her perform the roxie hart song during this video, well shouldn't they make her more versatile and shouldn't she be dancing alot more? or making it abit more sexy? it might not be her fault maybe its the direction, but really?! i like ashlee but i would have never got her for this part
I was dreading watching this vid when I saw the title, but I'm pleasantly surprised. She's not as phenomenal as previous Roxies, but she's pretty damn good.
I think it just sucks that there are some really talented people out there that could, and should, play the role of Roxy Hart, but because they're not some commercially known celebrity they're not given the role. Which brings up another issue, people like Ashlee Simpson only become celebrities b/c of a reality show or some relation to an already known celebrity. Talent just isnt recognized anymore. Who's next, Kim Kardashian as Anita in West Side Story.
Well that's you opinion and I have mine. I just think that we shouldn't immediately condemn pop-stars for being on broadway(or in the Westend) just because they're pop-stars. Look at Clay! He's great in Spamalot and Fantasia was phenomenal in The Color Purple. But I see where your coming from but I honestly think that you can't truly judge Ashlee because you already have a preconceived bias.
"it's such a great Broadway".. really? ugh musicals are not just called Broadways!!! they are called musicals! or shows, or musical plays, or if it is actually on broadway a "Broadway Show" such a pet peeve of mine, sorry "It's such an honor to be on Broadway".. too bad you aren't on Broadway, you are in the West End.... some one is confused...
"They're gonna recognise my teeth, my boobs, my nose.." Your nose? You mean the one you got with plastic surgery? haha. She's actually better than I expected. Musical theatre is difficult, and she tackled it well.
oh ASHLEE SIMPSON WHY ARE YOU ON BROADWAY! you do NOT belong there! she seems like shes trying too hard! theres no character! jeez damn pop stars getting big roles..they don't know anything about broadway
You can't totally suck as a singer and get a part in a major West End musical. She's better at the role than Melanie Griffiths, who REALLY couldn't sing AT ALL. She's not as great as Renee Zellweger, but she's ok.
from this i dont think she did very well. i prefered renee zellweger in the film version, she had more of a presence and was louder. also did you see ashlee's shoulder blades?! shes so skinny!!
I agree with xfile064. She doesn't have presence at all! Watch Ute Lemper or BeBe Neuwirth or Ann Reinking and then tell me that Ashlee Simpson did well just because she tried! Reinking transforms into Roxie. If it were my first Broadway show, you can bet your sweet ass I wouldn't commit to it unless I could nail it. Ashlee might be fine in a HS or touring co. production, but not in the "Broadways," I'm sorry to say. It sounded like she listened to the soundtrack and tried not to deviate.
I'm not going to say Ashlee isn't talented, but I am going to say she's absolutely HORRIBLE for the role of Roxie... She was exactly the opposite of what Roxie Harts character is...Borning, bland, monotonous, and stiff... Roxie is a little firecracker... This was just NOT Ashlee's role. She's better suited for other things.... And Jeus people, you CAN NOT lip sing a live musical, not done, EVER. That's why there are understudies...Which they probably should have used all along...
She nailed the songs better than I expected, and the dances are spot on, but as for the actual character portrayal, it's kind of awful. It's good acting, just doesn't have a heart behind it much. Not very believable.
such a cardboard actress... I haven't a clue as to why anyone would put their money into this with A.S. as Roxy... the roll could be so much more than anything she could bring to it. Bleeeeh!
there's just no passion in her... it's really annoying... there's so many others who's soooo passionate about broadway and they don't get to perform b'coz they're not famous enough... there's nothing in her face that screams "i love this" it's a shame...
I guess you've never heard Jessica really sing. When allowed just to let her voice be what it is, she is spectacular. Unfortunately, it's not really a pop-type voice. I wish there were more examples of this on the web. Simpson-Wentz has very little talent and will never get a true singing role on Broadway, or a professional venue (Roxie doesn't have top be a good singer. This role is more about the character). I remember when she had to be taught how to sing in tune. Her Dad created her.
I think she did pretty good singing the song Roxie here (Except for the 'Art' note. UGH. My ears!) but the first one is positively dreadful! And she dances like a robot. No emotion. Where's the FLAIR?
I kind of think her performance stinks! I was a Theatre major and have done this show. Roxy's character is very complex and I don't think that Ashlee pulls it off that well. She butchers the amazing music in the show. She is nasal and flat in most of the song clips they have shown. I honestly think she was just cast so they could use her name to sell the show. If I had paid to see this show on Broadway, I would have been very disapointed.
ugh. its a shame the west end has to drag in second rate american 'celebrities' to get bums on seats in theatres. really sad. there are so many talented 'no names' who have trained for years and could do this part standing on their head with more charisma. shes a horrible, flat actress...and cant really sing, which is bad..in a musical.
I dont like Ashlee but I said to myself before watching the video, "ok lets see this, I may be surprised", but I was wrong, I think that for a Broadway musical you need a strong personality, a great voice, and a big stage presence, and I think Ashlee has none of that! Sorry Ashlee fans, get over it!!
hey.....she's not bad. quite good. i had to see the clip, to see if it was THE 'ashlee simpson'; watching this, i was reminded that, yeah, pop career & fiascos aside, she'd started out in acting; this will give her a lot of cred, and it shows she's actually got a great voice.

She wasn't on the broadway stage, she was on the london stage.
i actually saw this show in december, she was really good
she's a good performer/singer.
The show is running ON Broadway and it has been for years, so it's a Broadway show, it's opened in Broadway before it opened in London.
Cast. People are cast in a role. A sculpture is cast. The die are cast. Nothing is casted.
she is actaully better at this than being a singer
she belongs on broadway
LOL! Not only that, but she was in LONDON! Not Broadway!
cool
She did a good job she's a great dancer and actor and singer
this movie and play was great! i have yet to see ashlee in the show but i wish her much luck in her career i met her once and she was a very sweet girl. seeing her on melrose place was cool too it was nice to see her back out there. in my opinion i loved her since i was 10 i had the biggest crush on her, i loved her reality show, and we lived in the same apartment building. I really do wish her luck with what lies next in her career!
i saw the show in december to... i was quite surprised at how good she was!!! great show!
OMG...*shudders* those poor poor people
I call them a show, or a musical, but that depends for other people if it's a play. I think she honestly just calls them that, and is assuming she's on Broadway, though she's in the West End.
I would pay big money to see her in Chicago.
This was not Broadway - she was in London' West End.
Wow! She sounds really amazing! Her voice was really made for jazz. It would be awesome if she did a Tony Bennett style album!
It's been that way for years
actually she was! in the movie she says she was born in "a chicken fram outside of lubbock" that's in texas
I'm not going to lie, I didn't think she could do it until I saw it just now!!! She is awesome and has come a long way since I first heard her belt out in the recording studio on her show!!!
Ashlee was the youngest person ever accepted into the School of American Ballet. Very prestigious. She can dance.
And whether we think she's good or not people are going to go see her and she's going to make money. Whether it's right or wrong is irrelevant because that's the way it is.
I'm sure the acting is horrendous, but the vocal quality isn't TOO bad.
id like to see that...
I HATE when famous people are given Broadway roles just because they are famous NOT because they are talented! Broadway performers are talented and far superior to most any recording artist because they do it live with out mixers making em' sound good!!
She's actually quite good.
I think the implication here was that she referred to Broadway in the improper sense.
She should've said "It's such a great Broadway PLAY," or "PRODUCTION", etc.
SHE WAS IN LONDON!!!
Renee was by far the best.

Saw her on Broadway last night...She was so amazing!!!
I see her in this a few years back on the west end and i have to give it to her she played an Amazing Roxy Hart! xx
She wasn't on Broadway, she was in London.
they only let her do it cause shes 'famous'
Well they wouldn't know that because They are not on Broadway or the Westend.
She's amazing
Americans call it a show, not a Broadway.
I think she's just fine. It sounds like she got a great character voice and Roxie is not a very vocally demanding role.
Her voice is actually not bad, although I don't really think it's a Roxie Hart voice.
She lacks stage presence.
note: this was on the west end, not broadway. and i saw this production at this theater, but im glad i saw a no-name and not ashlee simpson, i bet she lip syncs.
a lot of people don't know that she started out as a dancer.

yea but to be on live stage, you should have stage presence, which i think ashlee lacks in this
she is soooooooooo skinny :| look at the end to her shoulders D:
but i'm not dissapointed. i thought she should be very bad, but she did well :)
I was dreading watching this vid when I saw the title, but I'm pleasantly surprised. She's not as phenomenal as previous Roxies, but she's pretty damn good.
Who did Ashlee play?
Not bad, she wasn't horrible...
She lacked stage presence but wasn't bad...
OMG Fosse is turning in his grave.
"It's such a great boadway"? wtf? dumbest most horrible roxie ever.
I wouldn't.
but why does she refer to shows as "broadways"?
Stunning figure!
Ohhh yeah. My bad. I knew she won ONE oscar. Couldn't remember which :) And yes, Catherine deserved so much more....
"They're gonna recognise my teeth, my boobs, my nose.."
Your nose? You mean the one you got with plastic surgery? haha.
She's actually better than I expected. Musical theatre is difficult, and she tackled it well.
are yousaying she's not good? i haven't seen her on braodway, but she sounds pretty good for the part.
did it say London?...thats not Broadway, don't worry :-P
i really dislike this. she's simply not a broadway performer. i don't think she embodied roxie, and the singing was definitely not in character voice.
haha.."It's such a good Broadway."
oh ASHLEE SIMPSON WHY ARE YOU ON BROADWAY! you do NOT belong there! she seems like shes trying too hard! theres no character! jeez damn pop stars getting big roles..they don't know anything about broadway
Did she squeal?
It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't good enough for the Roxie character, maybe next time.
yeah ashley, sing through your nose a little more.
You can't totally suck as a singer and get a part in a major West End musical. She's better at the role than Melanie Griffiths, who REALLY couldn't sing AT ALL. She's not as great as Renee Zellweger, but she's ok.
for example...Haylee Duff the less attractive less popular less talented Duff sister who won the broadway role of Amber in Hairspray! WHATEVER!
from this i dont think she did very well. i prefered renee zellweger in the film version, she had more of a presence and was louder. also did you see ashlee's shoulder blades?! shes so skinny!!
It's weird, right? Maybe it's what she grew up calling them or something...haha, it's so strange.
She's pretty as always but I'm surprised the production company chose her to play the lead for this musical. Her vocals are not that strong yet...
I agree with xfile064. She doesn't have presence at all! Watch Ute Lemper or BeBe Neuwirth or Ann Reinking and then tell me that Ashlee Simpson did well just because she tried! ugh
that annoys me so much that she calls them broadways.
Oh my god, that bugged me too! Is that really what she thinks they're called?
she slaughtered the dancing. she wasn't sharp or fluid enough at all.
give her a break she did good!
I guess you've never heard Jessica really sing. When allowed just to let her voice be what it is, she is spectacular. Unfortunately, it's not really a pop-type voice. BARF. they really couldn't find some one else? really?
She’s lip syncing...imagine paying all that money for a broadway ticket to see some wannabe lip syncing instead of a pro doing it.
I think she did pretty good singing the song Roxie here (Except for the 'Art' note. UGH. My ears!) but the first one is positively dreadful!
And she dances like a robot. No emotion. Where's the FLAIR?
"It's such a great Broadway."
ugh. really?
not to judge anyone! but she just doesn't have the soft voice or soul of Roxy hart! ...not after we saw renne's performance
Yeah, no shit.
I kind of think her performance stinks! I was a Theatre major and have done this show. Roxy's character is very complex and I don't think that Ashlee pulls it off that well. "A few offers for some movies and some Broadways"... Really Ashlee? Really?
Much better and talented ,than her sis
ugh. its a shame the west end has to drag in second rate american 'celebrities' to get bums on seats in theatres. really sad. there are so many talented 'no names' who have trained for years and could do this part standing on their head with more charisma. shes a horrible, flat actress...and cant really sing, which is bad..in a musical.
