The free mod is called "Faction Crossbows" which adds crossbows for most of the major factions, adds new bolts, and you have to find the books (and keep them in your inventory) in order to craft them. Its pretty good.
I think it's purposeful, cause they need to balance things with something between the damage of dwarven crossbow and ebony crossbow, so they put an elven one, but yes, they could add glass crossbow or stalhrim crossbow.
I think Immortal Blood is my favorite book in Skyrim. I remember first reading it in Oblivion.. So it was nice to see it come back. I started with the Oblivion, way back on PS3

Fun fact about the crossbow. You can use it like a sword when killing draugar. (This also works with all enemies that use the draugar animation.) What i mean is, if you are in melee range and get a crit kill-shot on the draugar. It uses the sword or axe animation. Pluss you don't use any bolts when doing this. PS: you need to be like real up close if you want this to work. "Heavy archer build recommended"
@Twan Aker Modify the weaponspeedmult, it's the most straight forward way. Having the quickshot perk AND/OR ultimate combat mod active can affect this though. Any weird combination of the two can set the base Multiplier to 0 or 3 when it should be 1. I can't tell you what the right combo is though, I'm no expert (I rarely use crossnows), so see if the weaponspeedmult works first.
The Skyrim CC has definitely upped their game, lorewise and with all those details to the stories they create for these crossbows are good quality for sure

On a side note, you may be familiar with a problem plaguing the modding community at the moment where we cannot download mods and are left with the message "the operation could not be completed" which is causing us all to rage quit (or is it just me?). So my questions are... Have you found a way to tackle this (or at least a temp fix) and have you heard anything on the bethesda grape vine about them getting their finger out to sort it? I'm sure I'm not the one angry player wishing to never see that message again!
I CHECKED, AT A SMITHY (with appropriate perks) THEY CAN BE UPGRADED TO THE ENHANCED VERSION. IT ADDS THE IGNORE 50% OF ARMOR EFFECT! Edit: It also adds new Bolts, I have found the added bolts to be: Iron, corkbulb (needs alchemy ingredient creation, corkbulb roots required), and Bonemeal. Bonemeal Bolts are as powerful as Dwarven Bolts, and only require the Steel Smithing perk. Oh, and you need to be part of the Dawnguard.
Loved this CC content specially because it adds the Ebony and Elven crossbows. I personally ADORE my new Ebony Crossbow, as it packs some punch when shooting down enemies like vampires and Draugr, but I specially love it when bandits come at me and get a dwarven bolt (it would have been cool if you could add ebony bolts or elven bolts or even make them) to their skull. Also the Ebony and Elven crossbows are very aesthetically pleasing and look great with any armor. Great job on the video!

Although I do not like paying for mods I can respect these because it’s cheap on the content itself as really high quality so they technically are dlcs now
I got the extended Crossbow and dude. The bone Crossbow deals a max of 120 after you make it Legendary and max archery. So 120, plus the 50% armor ignore. Plus whatever bolt you use. Then you have the sneak peek of 3x the damage. And you can kill pretty much any enemy you come across with the exception of Dragons and final bosses in one shot.
Just doing ANOTHER run through of the game, I specifically want an assassin/thief build which whilst common for most totally goes against my usual barbarian/battle mage builds.. so much fun so far!
I heard they added more. Like deadric and stalhrim . And I wonder if the stalhrim crossbow also boosts ice enchantments. If so.. ice damage plus chaos... Woah lol

The best hidden cellar for me was in Oblivion during one of the Dark Brotherhood quest were we had to kill that one cat guy that fought with his fist. The cellar was hidden by cloth that covered the entire door.
Been a while since last time I play skyrim. But when it's come to crossbow, I always like dwarven crossbow design which also implemented in Faction Crossbow mod. My favorite is Dark Brotherhood Crossbow, dwarven design but darker color and of course, better damage. It's a good match for my character that using full black armor, including the sword as well :D Currently build a new pc, will play skyrim again in a few days 😊

In the interest of story, I would have suggested that the creator of this content should have left the Elven Crossbow in the hunter's den, and had a special quest for the Ebony Crossbow. Perhaps it was stolen by a fourth vampire during the ambush, and taken as a trophy? Or the hunter threw it into a 'hole' after he was bitten incase he was tempted to go on as a vampire so that he couldn't use it? Or the hunter got cold feet, and wanted to test the mettle of his successor while dieing in honerable combat? That way if the player really wanted it they'd have to earn it. Maybe add some schematics so the player could make them, just like the Dawnguard DLC. Heck, those could be encrypted and you need to take them to Sorin at Fort Dawnguard to decipher them!

What I don't like about creation club VS official dlc items is that I get this dirty feeling of pay to win when you buy a mod that has a downright better weapon. It feels like cheating cause you just download power. Meanwhile buying a dlc just doesn't give me that feel even though it is sorta the same. Anyone else feel the same?

The Rare Curios Creation adds different kinds of bolts as well. Pretty cool Creation too on the the cheap(er) side.
