The reason why the batter was soggy is because it was wrapped up if you was able to sit in and eat off a plate it would've been a different experience.. i'm from brum and I go bedders a lot for me its the best fish and chips I've had.. im quite let down at the fact you didn't enjoy it as much as I thought you would. Please visit again when life is back to normal and sit in 👊🏻👍🙏🏻
Should’ve gotten the fried onions on top quality! While you’re in brum lad try khans at ladypool road the lamb curry and chips is a dime!! Grillz and Afrikana great food too!
I second this, I know people that travel opposite side of brum to go khans..I mean ladypool rd has some if the best spots for that type of food anyways.
Matt im so happy that you went here pal :) its a great place but much better if you eat in and get the double fish and crispy bits on top. I was very concerned that after you went to the two worse chippys in my hometown that you would think birmingham food is terrible hopefully we have redeemed ourselves a bit. Please try cranes park fish bar in sheldon birmingham its a really great place you would love it. Keep up the great work you and ur missus are incredible 👍🏻
I’ve eaten at many chip shops around brum being a truck driver around the city & bedders ain’t what it used to be in the 90’s & early 2000’s. The best chippy in brum is dads lane in stirchley. Haven’t found one better than that place & I’ve been to hundreds of different places over the last 20 years
Portion was small-the fish didn’t look anything to dance about and the chips looked slightly anemic. It looked more like a 6/10 to me.I think we can all safely say the Black Country has the best fish and chips in the Midlands
If your In the Midlands you have to go Blackcountry for Fish and chips( Brum chippies are weak) especially the locally famous orange chips(battered chips) try Royals in Bilston, BlackCountry fryer Great bridge or Scott's Coseley ask for orange chips
Having had my dinner from Carols Chippy tonight I totally agree, though it’s arguable if Darlaston is true Black Country or just on the border. But it was proper good. Really nice battered chips and the fish was top quality.
If your still in Birmingham you need to try a slice of New York, the do such good and unique food such as a burger in a calzone, a burger with donuts as buns. Burgers all hand made. If your gonna try somewhere in Birmingham that has to be one!!
I can vouch for this one. The food is amazing . There is a section on the menu called "and a diet coke please" . They do buffalo wings tossed in Frank's hot sauce served with a blue cheese dip. THIS IS A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN. Please have a look at the menu. You won't be disappointed
Bedders has an amazing reputation locally, and yes, there's always a queue outside, which suggests an amazing experience awaits inside. I have been there on three occasions, a treat by my parents on their wedding anniversaries as they married nearby. Bedders serves absolutely average, bog-standard, small portion fish and chips. Their reputation is mystifying. I've heard some people say that the dining experience makes it worth it. The dining experience consists of sitting in a café eating fish and chips. Also - seven quid for fish and chips? Really? I don't mean to be negative about the place, it is what it is, but I've always been puzzled by why people are so crazy the Bedders experience.
People like Bedders because the food is always hot and fresh, the restaurant is always immaculately clean and the options for eat in fish and chips, of this quality at least, are incredibly limited in this part of Birmingham. Also factored into the cost is a drink, a sauce, pickled onions and bread and butter so £7 doesn't seem too steep.
You're such a nice guy mate, I love how you spoke to that guy behind you and let you give him a shout out. I have no idea what he said, but it was nice.
I’m a brummie in exile and this is what he said; “Big Johns is rubbish. Never again” and when asked if he had a message for everybody watching he said “Yes, don’t go to Big Johns, it’s not worth it”. 😂Clearly making reference to an earlier review by Matt. Big Johns is a “chain” that has expanded quickly all over B’ham & is cheap & cheerful to say the least. They would never see themselves as award winners in any respect in my opinion. I think I’m right in saying the owner of Big Johns also opened a high end Indian restaurant locally, the Tipu Sultan, where a lot of money has been spent on the furnishings & decor and I imagine the owner would hope to receive much more positive reviews.
I've been trying to escape from Birmingham since I was born here 50 years ago. Managed three years at Nottingham University, and then somehow the shithole's tractor beam dragged me back. If, however, you are negotiating an escape from Brum in a southerly direction, I can strongly recommend Sea Queen in Rubery, or even better, Lickey Fish & Chip Bar (B45). If you go to the latter, you can even wander across the road to Cofton Park and dine with a fine view.
Always welcome in 🏴 i own a fish and chip shop and a huge fan of shops across the country could share plenty of shops with you some outstanding shops all over. Fish and chips done right cannot be beaten ☺
I've had their fish and chips a few times now and they are not much different to any other average chippy. When the original family were there they were so much better because they used better quality oil, Very thin batter and the oil temperature was much hotter as in when they threw the chips in it was almost like an explosion rather than a quite sizzle like most chippies. The batter was thin and crispy and not holding too much grease and the chips were crispy on the outside and almost like mashed potatoes on the inside and very much like home cooked chips. I remember fish and chips, peas a cup of tea and bread and butter for 60p back in 1983. They were amazing then.
Go to Akbars on Hagley Road Birmingham delicious food you won't be disappointed, and also Afrikana Birmingham thank me later brittania on the hobmoor Road in Birmingham they do fish and chips it's really nice it's alot better thn bedders bigger fish and crispy to wht you was eating it used to be called Chris and lucias before the new owners took over but kept the recipe the same check it out
I love how people are suggesting fish and chip shops to visit. The truth is there are thousands in the UK, some good some bad and some exceptionally good.
Not sure about "one size and two types of fish only"... I like plaice.... sometimes rock. Cod is ok....but boring. £6.90? just under par. Good there. The Fish and Chip shop Stevenage is best.
Matt, you need to visit a fish and chip shop in York called Millers of Haxby based 55 The Village, Haxby, York YO32 2JE - winners of National Fish and chip shop of the year in 2018.
As a local, I've always found Bedders OK, but overrated. Prefer Cyprus on Wash Lane, or Pisces further down the Coventry Road in Sheldon. Also Dad's Lane.
Chip watch 👀👀. Try lincoln road chippy. They do battered chips cooked in beef dripping. You have to ask for them as they are not advertised. Always fresh that way. I normally call ahed so I'm not waiting. The fish is nice as they use tempura batter. but the battered chips are the best outside the black country.159 Lincoln Rd N, Birmingham B27 6RT
Best fosh and chips is Taks you was there the other week but went to Bobbos in blackheath.. Taks is on the high street, but thats a dump you want Taks on Coombs road (ghosty hill/ station road)
That was a small portion and looked like there was more batter than fish. You need to hit Burton On Trent, it's about 30 minutes away from Brum. Check out our food hotspots: Edward Street Chippy Madina Bakery Kebab Village Spice Hut Monmos Pizza Plaza Also, Jumma Mubarak to Zac, respect for the shout out!
Ye bedders is quite nice but people in Birmingham have the opinion it isn’t what it used to be and overhyped a bit. Please try oceans of Tamworth I know I put it on every post😂😂but is worthwhile
I'm the same as u Matt, batter wasnt crispy, I am really fussy when comes down to fish from chip shops. alot of chip shops batter are like the same as that. always hard to get a world class batter these days
I don’t think Bedders is the best in Brum. It’s close. You spent too long waffling and putting salt and vinegar on the batter. I usually sit in at Bedders (you get bread and butter and a cup of tea too) and steer clear of making the batter soggy. Bedders is a classic though but I agree with the points you made. Keep it up. 7.8/10 is pretty much spot on for Bedders.
Unfortunately the two best Birmingham Chippies have closed they were Chamberlains and the GBE and both cooked using beef dripping instead of oil, Reed Square Chippy near Pype Hayes Park in Birmingham is a great place for Fish and Chips and also fired Pizza mmm
100%. Chamberlains was awesome. Became a Harry Ramsdens after it closed and not sure what it is now. Great British Eatery was another gem. Was only around for a year or two though.
I think you should use a slogan that I use in circumstances both good and bad, if I like something or dislike something I always say this, " ooh I could just kruuusssh ah grrrrr-ape", so funny, the reactions lol 😂🤣 as in I am so excited I literally I contain either the excitement or dislike that I literally could crush ah grrrrr-ape 😂🤣. 😁👍 You can have that one for free pal, excellent reviews by the way, the camera assistants arm must get tiring, hope you appreciate it or do ya just leave her the scraps JOKING 👍👌
You can literally eat your way around the world in Brum! French, Italian, Spanish, Thai, Chinese, Vietnamese, Indian, American style barbecue and some cracking old fashioned British caffs. Pretty much all in walking distance of each other!
Bedders WERE renown for their fish and chips. They had won awards in the past, pre 2016.They have changed hands since the previous owners had won all the awards. Its just mediocre these days. If you want a decent donner kebab, get to Cranmore fish bar. 244 Cranmore Blvd, Shirley, Solihull B90 4PX. The lamb donner is 100% lamb. It tastes reminiscent of a lamb roast. The portions are fairly substancial. The fish is a decent size too with a crispy batter. Slightly overpriced but you know where the extra goes..you only get what you pay for. I understand why you went to bedders but yet again not the best place to go in Birmingham. I know plenty of places in and around that will get your taste buds tingling. Keep up the good work 👏
My guy said Jummah Mubarak 😂😂 .... For anyone wondering, it's when Muslims go the Mosque on a Friday to pray, he's saying have a blessed Friday.
Surely the plastic on top makes the batter go soggy?
plastic?
If it's not wrapped in paper or in a cardboard box it will be soggy
The covered wagon for some nice Indian food. The chip shed for some great fish and chips. Love it
The reason why the batter was soggy is because it was wrapped up if you was able to sit in and eat off a plate it would've been a different experience.. i'm from brum and I go bedders a lot for me its the best fish and chips I've had.. im quite let down at the fact you didn't enjoy it as much as I thought you would. Please visit again when life is back to normal and sit in 👊🏻👍🙏🏻
Or just don't have salt and vinegar and do it after and let it breathe for 2 mins did the exact same today was banging
Should’ve gotten the fried onions on top quality! While you’re in brum lad try khans at ladypool road the lamb curry and chips is a dime!! Grillz and Afrikana great food too!

My fave is Pisces Sheldon and No.2 is Dads Lane. Top quality every time.
So many people say that.
Stone cross chippy for the lamb bro.. you said you were on it
Love this dudes energy! New follower & so glad I've found this channel 🙌🏼
I've not had Bedders for years but you need the crispy bits and onions too if you're having a bedders 😋
Portion was small-the fish didn’t look anything to dance about and the chips looked slightly anemic. It looked more like a 6/10 to me.I think we can all safely say the Black Country has the best fish and chips in the Midlands
Don’t rate it unless you’ve tried it, it’s one of the best fish n chips out there
Classic review. Fish & chips, drink watch, banter with passers by!

The burgers in donuts isn’t a new thing though-and not really a reason to visit the joint 🥴🥴

Birmingham! The best bit about it is the exit sign lol me and the misses love going to miller and carter near Solihull when we stay

The batter probably went soggy because you left it 20 minutes before you actually ate it? Top chip shop.
Before the change of ownership around 2008 bedders never did curry sauce.
For fish and chips in Birmingham try silver hake. Very reasonably priced for a decent fish and chips.
More hype than substance then, never been but Dads lane chippy in Birmingham is my favourite.
Is it halal bro?

that looked below par and a greasefest to boot 4/10, i think matt got caught up with bedders hype, nice to see friendly locals.
Brummies aren’t friendly people. It must of been all for the cameras
Bedders is more about the dining in experience. Never takeaway.
I live around the corner, we are all proud of bedders around here !

Water orton fish babe Coleshill for the best fish and chips or brook vale chippy for a battered beef burger 🍔
