  • To accompany the full article, experienced printmaker Colin Blanchard shows how he goes about sharpening and honing the two basic linocut gouge shapes.
'It is possible to send your lino tools away and have them professionally re-sharpened, but really it's best to learn to keep them in full working order at all times.
Little and often is the key and a quick check and strop before each carving session should be part of your creative preparation ritual.
So why not use some of the extra time many of us have at the moment and practise sharpening and maintaining your gouges?'

Hi Colin, I’m wondering if you can sharpen the pfeil 0.5 U tool on the slipstrop, as the bumps all seem too big. If so, which part do you use please? Thank you.

Same here. Grrr. Use same tool to carve out its profile on a bigger popsicle stick or stir stick. Make it a tad larger groove to compensate laying very thin piece of leather from a used wallet or purse ect to glue onto that groove u made. Hope that helps mate ✌️

Hi Colin, Ive been carefully watching your helpful videos and reading your blog; in one of your blogs you mentioned that Marmoleum is your favourite surface for cutting. Do you know where I can buy this type of linoleum for lino-cutting? I live in a small-town in BC Canada and the flooring store can't bring it in.
