It sounds as a problem in the wiring, I've an E32 and for what I've heard if someone has modified your exhaust system is highly probable that they didn't installed correctly the catalyst sensors after mounting them. That's the reason why one banck sleeps. Check the Bentley Manual, they have detailed wiring diagrams that should guide you through the proper wire order. Keep the faith.
the engine tick is getting louder and louder/the first shop bid was correct/he was a smart man and knew what mess it would be/i think that price was a gift he should have locked that price in /this is a 30 year old bmw
The shop didn’t address the tick at all. Misdiagnosed several suspension components that were totally blown out. Missed control arms that weren’t even tightened down. Misdiagnosed the rear end noise as the driveshaft rubbing on something yet it was a totally worn out diff. Said the valve covers were leaking and they were bone dry. Didn’t address the terrible running of the engine. About the only thing they got right was the transmission was bad. So out of all that if you think they did a good job I would be happy to send you their contact info for you to take your car there.
When has the filter been replaced on the transmission? I saw a video where only the filter inside the transmission of a BMW causes these type of issues.
Not sure when it's been replaced. The pan gasket was not original and has no date code. I'm going to try doing the filter replacement and new fluid and see what happens. Worth a try vs dropping the trans for sure.
Found the primary o2 sensors were reversed causing the majority of the running issues. I did replace the crank sensors with OEM in another video. Been running great since.
Hey Rob, I can tell by your voice that you are a bit disappointed, I know the feeling! You can only do what you can do. I don't know whether there is anything like this stateside, but I have a HAMER (you can Google it) car lift in my garage. It is basically a manually operated (farm jack in each corner) four post ramp. I bought it after my 840 came off of axle stands and frightened me to death! They are ideal for home garages where you do not have height for a 2 post lift. Also, I have restored 3 cars now, all of which have needed jacking point and sill welding which cannot be done with a 2 post lift. You can also dismantle and move the ramp in about an hour, so you can set it up outside weather permitting (= never here in the north of England!). I looked at all available lifts, the Quickjack types are OK, but don't lift that high and restrict access. also, it is easy to adapt the HAMER for wheel free work as well, they actually sold a beam to do this, but I made my own being a tight-ass Yorkshireman! These lifts trade second hand in the UK for about $1000 or less, mine is the biggest they made and cost about £2000 new, but it is the best money I have ever spent. Anyhow, I look forward to more E31 content, my project has stalled completely now because of an issue with the fuel rail. Regards from the UK.
Thank you for the support. It was pretty soul crushing. This car just fights and fights and fights us. My quickjacks finally came in so may give them a try. I’m going to look up the ones you mentioned as well! The QJ’s downside as you mentioned is limiting access. Can’t get under from the sides at all with them. The project will be back. Still lots to do. Not having much luck finding a shop willing to swap the trans so may have to give it a go again here.
@@robsweekendgarage OK Rob. They certainly know how to fight I'll say that! I'm assuming the box is a ZF 5 speed? There are plenty of shops here in the UK that re-condition these boxes, but I'm assuming it's the same over there as here, who do you trust nowadays? About the ramp, they were made by 1 guy who had the idea of making something to help with his classic car restoration. He actually delivered mine himself! I think he retired, but the idea is a sound one and could be re-produced I'm sure. The only down side is the amount of time to raise the car and the strength needed. I bought mine about 12 years ago, I'm 71 now and it takes it out of me. Your engine sounds to have a lifter knock maybe? A channel for you to look at is Steve's BMW Barn. He is a shedload of money into an 850 engine and still hasn't got it running right. Good luck with everything.
It's the ZF 4speed. Fairly known to have some problems with the reverse clutch pack. I'm going to replace the filter and add new fluid, see if that does anything. Doubtful but easy thing to try. We do have another transmission on hand from a donor vehicle. Seemed pretty clean inside when I removed the pan.
@@robsweekendgarage I do not know if this will help, but my one of my friends completely solved a smoking and noise issue on his Opel Monza by draining the oil completely and filling the engine up with paraffin (lamp oil) letting it sit for a day or two, draining the lamp oil out and after that filling it with fresh oil. I also saw on Vice Grip Garage that he also uses all types of concoctions to get even seized engines running again LOL!!!
You seem a little sad about the situation... imagine everything worked perfectly? where would the fun be! working on old cars is just one fight after the other but soon or later it will run like a dream!!!

@@robsweekendgarage Might just as well get a SMG if the transmission needs to be changed.
Do me a favor and change the cam and crank sensors. I’m willing to bet this will solve all the runability issues.

I really hope you get the OE exhaust tips for this BMW and un-rice it, LOL!!!
We have a Remis axle back muffler set ready to go on it.
Cosmetics before mechanical?
Body shop had an opening and he took it. Plus it had gotten too cold for me keep working on it outside.
What is the loud knocking noise at idle?
Has a collapsed lifter. We're trying to do some oil flushes to see if we can get it pumped back up. if not will have to dive back in and tackle it.
