  • During his presidential campaign, Donald Trump pledged to bring peace to the Middle East and to stop engaging the US in endless wars. He also vowed to end funding for costly nation-building efforts abroad. In one proposal regarding Gaza, he upended all those promises by saying the US could take ownership and rebuild the battered Palestinian enclave. After receiving global condemnation, he repeated his plan over the weekend.
As for where the Palestinians would go, Trump suggested that some regional countries, including Jordan and Egypt, could take them in, but both countries have refused. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu came up with his own proposal, suggesting a Palestinian state should be established in Saudi Arabia. Arab nations uniformly condemned those remarks. And the Turkish president said no power can force Palestinians out of their homelands. So can Trump's plan actually be implemented, or is it some sort of bargaining strategy?
