- Top dressing with crushed rock and decorative rocks is used with succulent plants, this not only to make them look great but also for plant health.
Rocks and stones can be used to create mini succulent gardens and landscapes. Top dressings can help with plant health by lifting the plant above soil level to provide better ventilation as well as to protect the foliage from soil splashing when watering.

Beautiful! I actually make my own. Where I live in Connecticut there is a lot of granite gneiss and schist. So I use the decomposed granite for my soil mix and the hard granite for my top dressing. I also separate a lot of the big Mica pieces and sell them! I've noticed since using the decomposed granite in my soil mix I only add a liquid feed once a year! My plants absolutely love the minerals. And the hard pink granite top dressing ( it's more of a tan color) is absolutely beautiful I spend the whole winter in my garage smashing boulders by hand and sifting. I get two different size sand granules as well LOL
Hello Janet, Its great to see you making your own toppings and growing mediums. It just makes sense to use what you can find locally. The decomposed granite is ideal as is the harder type for top dressing. And as for smashing rocks in winter, that would keep you fit and warm, so winning all round. I use small to medium river pebbles for most of my succulents plus red/black lava rock here and there. However, on some of my faster growing aloe, I've switched to cedar mulch since the stones disappear too quickly.
Yes, you do need to use the right stones for the right plants, and with larger plants and smaller plants it is all a learning experience.
Thanks for the tutorial..Just started using river pebbles as edge toppers for the pots & sprinkle few polished tiny ones due to cost saving.. watching this have to add pebbles all over for health purposes.. I’m new in collecting succulents, so learning a lot.. I love those pots with feet but can’t find it here in So Cal where I live.. Does decomposed granite helps as toppers too? It’s like fine sand texture. Thanks again

Something I’m just discovering as I look for better growing mediums for my cacti and succulents is how difficult it is to find substrates . And if you are not careful when ordering , they want to scam you on a tiny amount of rock or soil mix /:
Yes, a lot of materials can be sourced from local stone and sands, it is often a matter of finding the right materials for the right porosity.
Yes, I agree. And some substrates are just too heavy to have them sent. Can you see a big bag of Akadama arriving in your mailbox?

Depends on how cold the Greenhouse gets, it will be protected from frost, and if its not overwatered it may be OK If the Greenhouse keeps it reasonably warm.
If the Greenhouse gets very cold for long periods, take it inside just to be safe.

I've seen some people use fine desert sand as top dressing, especially with their cacti. does that help the same ways rock dressing does or would it only be useful aesthetically?
It can be used, however is much finer, so watering may be different. Most go for washed river sand which is coarser and therefore breaths more. A very thin layer should be OK

@@johnnyAGardening well that's disappointing. It's very hard to find good quality succulents here. I don't know when I watch Mr Lucas I get a sense of how he truly loves the plants and it's really a passion for him and here I just, I don't know it's like a mass production. You know, let's produce produce produce make weaker plants smaller plants or plump them up really fast to get them out and send them out in Mass quantity all for profit type of thing and we as the consumer but also succulent lover end up with a crappy strain of a crappy plant that was doomed from the beginning.

I need help..now that I've dressed my succulent with pumice..I don't know how to tell when the plant needs water anymore because I can't see the soil. And when I try to move the pumice out of the way to stick my finger in the soil the pumice falls in the hole and on the table...big mess... There must be a better way to do this.. Moisture meters don't work well in my succulent soil because it has much gravel and things in it that the moisture meter hits and doesn't accurately tell the moisture so I can't use those.
Use the weight method, know how much your pot weighs by feel when dry, and then when wet. OR use the time method, not overly accurate, but mostly works. Water every 21 days.
