Yana Banana my husband and I are on a 5 year work visa for anywhere in the UK and we work 3-6 month contracts in different regions for the NHS. We chose Belfast first because at the time we wanted to experience the culture and be able to easily travel around Ireland (not able to work down south on our visas) before brexit was supposed to kick in in March. Little did we know brexit would keep getting delayed haha. We ended up loving Belfast and would probably come back (currently living in England).
As someone from Northern Ireland I'm surprised that the bomb scares, violent paramilitaries and all the lingering tensions of post-troubles Northern Ireland didn't make your list

Alastair Ward my husband is Canadian and I’m dual citizen American/Canadian. Canada is very safe, but I’d have to agree with you 100% about parts of the US!
I've been stabbed twice, got dogs set on me outside a riot I wasn't even apart of, had an armallite blow up my neighbours house, it's a pretty bad county
With regard to the slow service at restaurants. Remember that in the UK, waiters are paid the minimum wage, while in the US the only way to get a decent pay is being tipped. So, that's why waiters in the US are so fast and always so obliging. Here they're not paid enough of course, but the basic pay is far better than the average American restaurant
Thanks for taking the time to watch our video and comment! I do agree and acknowledge that what you mention here is 100% true, but I do find Europeans view this as the only reason. Canada pays waiters minimum wage too but the service is still better/more efficient. I do find there is a different attitude towards customer service that impacts it. One factor may be that Canadians tip similarly to Americans despite the waiters making minimum wage. Fortunately now that I’ve lived in the UK for three and a half years I’ve gotten used to the service in Europe a bit more and don’t mind it as much. But I do think it’s a combination of money/tipping culture as well as different expectations/attitudes towards customer service.
@@LukeandTylerTravel you're right as well. With regard to the NHS, I agree. I'm a nurse and I know how much of my time at work is spent more on paperwork (at least my hospital got rid of the paper and I use computers) than with patients
You are absolutely correct, but that doesn't excuse bad service. Some service in Belfast is disgraceful. Even so-called fancy places, you will see them getting more rude and ignorant when they have to deal with a slight influx of customers. If those same places were planted in the likes of New York, the employees wouldn't be able to handle surviving.

Cool, thanks! We unfortunately did miss Bangor so will keep it in mind next time we visit Northern Ireland (we don't live in Belfast anymore but move around a lot for work so may end up coming back).
I live in bangor and mate go to Lidl They have some mad prices mate you can get 3 packets of bourbons for £1.29 it's good crac and dont say upa shankel road in Belfast they wont take it well
Dad was from belfast and I grew up in the US and the whole restaurant issue I agree with. My dad took forever in a restaurant and couldn't figure out why until we went to belfast and then I was like"ooohhh" lol I get it now. Americans eat and get out.And the wait staff are "overly"nice because they need you tip because that's how they make a living is off your tips. The eating out in belfast was confusing at first. But other than that we enjoyed ourselves.
@@user-qi5jw2hg1c my son and I are planning to move there from Toronto. We think tipping is stupid b/c employers should just be paying their EEs a proper living wage anyway. If they can’t afford to pay EEs, they should NOT be in business!! Servers should NOT have to cross their fingers and desperately hope that customers will be in a good mood any have extra funds to tip them that night. It’s a scary way to live not knowing if you’ll earn enough to get by. Anyway, that’s our 2 cents.
@@SolutionsWithin well-said. More and more servers here however are expecting to be tipped. I personally do not tip, I agree with you that it's stupid. Having said that, if you feel obliged to tip, a £5 note is perfectly acceptable on a bill of say £50 in my view. But don't feel obliged to tip either
Wow, this was difficult to watch being Belfast born and bred! But I understand some of your points of view like the inefficiencies of the admin processes of the NHS (which most people benefitting from the NHS will never really observe or take under their notice - the most important thing about the NHS, whilst it is under incredible pressure, for various reasons, is the fact that it is free and therefore I find your criticism of this difficult to accept considering the shortcomings of the Healthcare system in the States). Your critique and comparison of automatic vs manual is hilarious but you do realise you're wrong, right?! Manual is so much more superior. I totally understand that manual and automatic driving are world's apart, especially as manual would be considered a more advanced form of driving (hence why lots of nervous drivers or those who feel overwhelmed when learning how to drive a manual, are sometimes advised to take the automatic route). Your suggestion that our dryers are worthless in terms of function is a dire generalisation - you have merely encountered a rubbish dryer, which I'm sure happens in the States. Making a general conclusion about the failings of ALL dryers in Belfast/NI based on your experience of ONE is a bit silly! Although, to be honest who uses dryers on a regular basis anyway?! Definitely not an economical or environmentally friendly option. I have had the same washer/dryer combo machine for 10 yrs and it's still working like a dream. I agree with your observation on coffee - we don't have a huge coffee culture and it's still developing. However, depending on where you shop, you'll witness a wide range of different types of coffee including locally made varieties. There are also some up and coming local coffee shops that are superb. Again, agreed the issue of plastic packaging is a problem but most certainly not isolated to Belfast - it's a UK wide problem and depending on where you shop, you will see different efforts to minimise this. I noticed that you were shopping in Coop - this is very much at the budget end of the grocery spectrum. I've seen other shopping outlets in Belfast city offering alternatives. There's actually a few businesses that offer supplies with no packaging, where you're expected to refill as you go. If you ask around or investigate (like any city) you will find other alternatives but on the whole I agree that there's much more the UK should and could be doing in this area. Who cares about water fountains?! The dog poo and littering in public in general was a HUGE problem in the UK and has actually improved A LOT. I agree with you that it could be better, but please bare in mind that there has been huge steps to address this. This is very much cultural issue and trying to change behavious and mindsets takes a lot of work and time to bed in. Again, the smoking thing is a huge cultural issue and there has been huge steps in the last 15 yrs to address this. I agree with you that it could be better - but this is something you can't change overnight. Your video was interesting and I agree with some of your points but felt that some of your generalisation and lack of understanding in terms of cultural influences and the efforts which have already been put in place to address these, would have added more balance to your content.
Thank you for the very thoughtful and respectful comment! I will admit that my opinions have grown and changed about some of these areas, as I did make this video fairly early on from when we moved across the pond. Thanks again -- I legitimately enjoyed reading this comment. :)
@@LukeandTylerTravel My pleasure. I did enjoy getting an ‘outside’ perspective of NI! It’s not something I’ve ever seen before and you did highlight things that we could and should be doing better 💕
I don't have a dryer purely because they cost so much to run, I suppose there's also the environmental impact so I assume the EU has rules on how powerful they can be.
Hmmm not gonna say that there are NO good driers in Europe, but I still stand by that your odds of coming across a shitty one are far higher here than in other places. It's cool, I hang my clothes up to dry more now than I did before, which is a win for the environment, so no hard feelings about it! 😂
Maybe I am biased because my people are from Belfast because I love Ireland, however, I couldn't find paper napkins when I visited Belfast and it drove me nuts, but I went and got my Irish passport anywaywhen I returned to the US. I am disabled, and awheelchair user. I found the Irish people to be extremely helpful and kind and I plan on moving to Belfast soon.
greetings from cardiff, south, wales uk.. this seems quite nice.. doesn't sound any different to here (or, by yer should i say?) am wondering about possibly moving to n. ireland at some point.. glad you mentioned packaging there is way way too much of it, it's a big problem.. but in all the supermarkets i go to, Sainsbury, Morrisons, coop, m and s and Tesco they all sell unwrapped which is good because i can buy exactly how much i want just for me.. thankyou for sharing this.. coming to wales? 🙂 x
Hi there! Thanks for watching. Between this video and now we’ve lived in England and Scotland as well and have gotten used to some of the things mentioned in this video. The packaging is still a problem - like you say things are getting better and hopefully continue to get better. I lived in Swansea for a bit right before COVID hit - would love to return to Wales at some point! We hiked up Snowdon which was such a beautiful experience! Never been to Cardiff though so we will have to make our way over there at some point! ☺️
Very nice content and very informative video. Your video made me start to create my own channel. I am making blogs on HOW IS THE LIFE LIVING IN DUBLIN.
It is very interesting to see someone who’s from North America experience Northern Ireland for the first time, many people will think that it’s a complete war zone and that the country is divided based on religion, it is now a thing of the past and we have gotten better as a country, there are someone things that annoy about Northern Ireland and I’ve lived here all my life, the overall traffic annoys so much especially when I go to Belfast but also in my hometown where it has some worst traffic I’ve ever seen which is even worse than Belfast it’s a city, also sometimes people can be really rude sometimes, not all people in Northern Ireland are but some are
So I shouldn’t worry? I just applied to a Catholic University here in the states, and would like to study abroad in Belfast. Other comments on this video said there are still religious tensions, but I hope what you say is true - that things have calmed down. I’m not even religious.
Haha I get your point. But it's all about perspective, right? I see it as I don't have to wait ages for my bill. I see both sides of it honestly. Thanks for the comment!
@@LukeandTylerTravel Here in Ireland wages are better, in the US pay is so low waitresses need to top up with tips. It reminded me of a third world country. We're not used to tipping in Ireland to the same extent except voluntarily and for exceptional service. In the US a tip appears to be part of the bill.
@@Londubh1 I do agree that the US pays servers at an abysmally low rate. However, I will mention that I believe in Canada waiters are paid minimum wage and yet are as efficient as American servers in my experience.
@@LukeandTylerTravel I was coming at it from a different angle, wages and tips. Having experienced what many countries have to offer, I do have to concur with what you're saying. In Ireland many young people just don't give a damn, about anything, and besides there is no tradition of service with a smile. No training, not seen as a long-term career. A stop-gap until something better comes along.
Don’t remember what it was as I don’t live in that flat anymore. It was one of those washer/dryer combos. I think that was the primary issue... the combos never seem to be able to get anything dry!
Cant learn to work a gearstick but hes gonna fix the nhs lol hetes s tip, use one of the tons of plastic bottles ur gurning about and use a tap! Hey presto free water without the fountains
1. You're living in the past with manual. In the next 20 years when Europe switches to electric vehicles you will finally catch up with the rest of the world and use automatic as well. 2. Don't know why people get so offended by the idea of water fountains. I do use a sink, but kinda gross when you're at the airport and have to fill up from a sink everybody's been washing their hands in, likely touching the faucet with their dirty hands. You can ask a restaurant or bar at the airport to do it, which again, I do, but I feel awkward doing it because it's construed as very rude in NA to ask for that if you aren't buying something. I'm talking about water fountains that are designed for bottles. They tend to accommodate bigger bottles too, whereas sinks can be small and make it difficult/awkward to fill up a water bottle. You know, there are lots of things I love about this country but so many of you are so sensitive about even the smallest bit of constructive criticism. Get a grip! You can acknowledge things you don't like about a place AND overall still like the country you're living in. By your responses I wouldn't be surprised if you've never left the UK though, so I don't expect someone like you to understand!
@@LukeandTylerTravel lol how judgemental of you! You can tell ive never left the uk 🙄🙄🙄 ok... I think its cute u say using a tap when everyone else does is gross but not a water fountain... But you do you. I have three more years on my UK visa that I fully intend to make the most of.
@Howard Pym yes you’re probably right. Which will mean for the driving experience all cars will basically function more like an automatic than a manual. Can’t wait 😜

Hardly anyone in the whole of Europe will sympathise with the automatic/ manual car comment :) But... when we are all forced to go electric from 2030 manual gears will slowly go the way of the dinosaur (unfortunately). I also have a combi washer and dryer and agree that they are not fit for purpose. A (much) shorter drying time would be welcome.

Yeah the car buffs heads are exploding. You have to be monumentally lazy and incapable to 'need' an automatic. Automatics are also generally less fuel efficient if you need an environmental justification.
Drove manual my whole life. Just switched to a nice new automatic truck. Feels much more lux not having to effing peddle the thin. Lol. My truck I a hybrid so uses less gas anyway.

Very confused by your comments about dryers. I think you need a new one..... we have perfectly normal working dryers that dry your clothes in half an hour mate...
Rossellini Rossical Ross C I think it’s especially the washer dryer combos. We don’t use those in North America because we tend to have larger spaces for a full washer and full dryer. Is yours a dedicated dryer or is it a combo washer/dryer
Fair enough! My point was that good coffee seems few and far between, whereas back home you don't have to work so hard to find a decent cup of coffee. It would be like saying "you must go to this specific store to find a remotely decent cup of tea". Brits/Irish would be rioting in the streets if it was so hard to find a good cup of tea! 😂 Thanks for the comment :)
No one follows the law..LAW about picking up dog poo? Yes they do! Looks like you lived just of the Ormeau road of which there are several fruit and veg shops that don't use packaging. Your example video was in the Co-op, which is a corner shop...not a specialty fruit and veg place. We stick to manual gears because we have smaller winding roads, so quicker gear changes are needed. Unlike Canada and the US...we don't need roads the width of a football pitch! Vaping or smoking is not allowed inside, so that's just wrong. You keep saying..'I saw this in London..I saw this in Malta....I saw this in the Canary islands'..mate, they are vastly different counteries. To use an example of a country outside of Northern Ireland and then say that's what you don't like about 'here' ( being Belfast) does not make sense and is not a fair representation of the place. I wouldn't say, "I don't like drivers in Canada , for example, when I was in Russia, people drive very fast!" Your dryer is rubbish...guess what, most people have dryers that work fine here!
We understand that Belfast and Malta are not the same but there are some general similarities being in “Europe” vs North America. As well as some differences we noticed that are more specific to Belfast. Although there are specialty shops that sell food/veg unpackaged, we were commenting on just how much more plastic there is with fruit and veg generally. Most fruit and veg in North America are unpackaged and there is no need to go to a specialty store to get it that way. Driving manual isn’t for us and that’s just a preference. But it seems like the world will be slowly transitioning to automatic cars anyways with more and more electric cars being made (which are all automatic). The U.K. is planning on fully transitioning away from all petrol/diesel cars after 2030 so there will be a large number of automatics on the road in the future. Interesting times! Cheers
I went to the Tim Hortons just down from the Welcome Belfast centre. Have you tried their coffee? I am a tea drinker myself so I have no idea whether its the same as back home.
Tracy Jutras I saw the Tim Hortons in Belfast but never tried it over here. I have had it in Canada though. Lots of people drink it in Canada, but more because it’s cheap and convenient. I joke people get double doubles (two creams, two sugars) to mask the taste of how burnt the coffee is there 😂 it’s similar to why people go to McDonald’s I guess. Is it top level cuisine? No. But it’s fast, cheaper, and there’s a location everywhere.
pfdrtom I was pretty surprised to see it myself! I think I read somewhere they have locations in random places like the Middle East as well! Who’d have thought?
I have only watched as far as the "drier" complaint..... If all you have to be unhappy over is the fact you are too lazy to drive a manual gearbox, or wait for clothes to dry, relative to ya know Belfast being bombed to high hell (at 38 I remember this too vividly, sad to say) or terrorism you are doing well.... It does in that light come across as a bit priveliged - and before anyone says I am being negative, I would rather folk complain about automatic vs manual gearboxes over bombing campaigns any day of the week!
Glad the bombings have stopped and things are better now. Haha yes I would agree that we are lucky enough to live comfortable lives, and at the end of the day these are just small inconveniences.

Americans eat and get out.And the wait staff are "overly"nice because they need you tip because that's how they make a living is off your tips. The eating out in belfast was confusing at first.
Jon Johnson yes, you are probably right about the difference in environmental regulations.
I hope you could
provide cost of living as well.
Can confirm the drier you have is just a shit one, mine takes 40 minutes for everything to be dry in the same country
Hmmm not gonna say that there are NO good driers in Europe, but I still stand by that your odds of coming across a shitty one are far higher here than in other places. It's cool, I hang my clothes up to dry more now than I did before, which is a win for the environment, so no hard feelings about it! 😂
Manual transmissions give you greater vehicle control and fuel economy.

Never been to Cardiff though so we will have to make our way over there at some point! ☺️
Very nice content and very informative video. Your video made me start to create my own channel. I am making blogs on HOW IS THE LIFE LIVING IN DUBLIN.
Belfast City Centre at night, it is downright dangerous and I was born and bred here. Water fountains is the least of your worries in Belfast.
We’ve never had any issues in Belfast. Still one of our favourite cities!
It is very interesting to see someone who’s from North America experience Northern Ireland for the first time, many people will think that it’s a complete war zone and that the country is divided based on religion, it is now a thing of the past and we have gotten better as a country, there are someone things that annoy about Northern Ireland and I’ve lived here all my life, the overall traffic annoys so much especially when I go to Belfast but also in my hometown where it has some worst traffic I’ve ever seen which is even worse than Belfast it’s a city, also sometimes people can be really rude sometimes, not all people in Northern Ireland are but some are
Dor Cat yeah traffic can be annoying for sure. And yes people do still have those perceptions, I find.
So I shouldn’t worry? I just applied to a Catholic University here in the states, and would like to study abroad in Belfast. Other comments on this video said there are still religious tensions, but I hope what you say is true - that things have calmed down. I’m not even religious.
W. A. King There is still some tensions, but we have gotten better as a country
The waitresses in north America are constantly hovering for one reason, they expect a big tip.

Get a grip! if u want good coffee order it from baileys, or you can by it in general merchants or have a wee google. tescos is never gonna sell good coffee mate
Tim Hortons outside Canada? Cool.
pfdrtom I was pretty surprised to see it myself!

Don't you put your clothes on the radiator to dry?
Haha yes actually we do this now! It’s a life saver if you need something to dry quick
@@LukeandTylerTravel keep the radiators on!
I live in Northern Ireland and I’ve got to agree with the smoking point you made
Thanks! Hopefully it gets better overtime. Nonetheless we really miss Northern Ireland!
Well that’s not all dryers here that can be like just the one in ur apartment thing
Haha yes you’re probably right!
Automatic is more expensive here.
More lax attitude here though there is flaws
We’ve definitely noticed the price difference when it comes to automatics
There's nothing to dislike about Belfast all of us here are cool af

Typical uninformed person. Learn the facts paul

Agreed! We love Northern Ireland!
Hello! :) I'm from California and I'm sitting here giggling and shaking my head and saying "YESSS!!!!!" to each thing you mention. I agree 100%! Especially the dryer situation! Or faux dryer. It'll shrink your clothes but it's still damp... I'm like why? I appreciate your videos!! It's nice to know I'm not alone & not crazy!
Hahaha yayyy I'm not alone either! This video gets a ton of hate so I'm glad at least one person gets where I'm coming from! 😂
