I like to sit in bed with my psvita remote playing my PS4 and need something to do it when i move to PS5 so this looks good. What iphone would I need thats cheap but does the job?
Awesome review literally just picked this up I was playing this and totally blew my mind how easy it felt to forget I was playing on my phone. Literally kept looking for my phone while playing and forgot I was actually holding it and not a psp or vita lol
I think the main point of Backbone One is that it's wired, therefore no lag. It's also the only controller that has a 3.5mm jack. The subscription features are pointless.
My only gripe is that I’m really hard on phones and I have to take my off my phone case to use the backbone but I like it. Also mild discomfort in hands after long gaming sessions. Not like with a regular remote controller. Great video
Appreciate the run down! Taking off the case is definitely frustrating. As that often isn't super easy (depending on the case). Also, I never played long enough to get mild discomfort. But that makes total sense and not something I thought of.
Just scrape the backbone's adhesive pads off (the ones underneath the phone and the one that surrounds the USB/lightning port) with something sharp and you should have no problem using it with a normal sized case. (Provided it isn't an Otterbox or some giant case.)
You could use your backbone playing in a hotel room if you're a hotel rooms TV is a smart TV where you can mirror your phone to the TV then you could play that on your console so technically yes you can if the hotel has a smart TV with mirror abilities
Watched the whole video and really enjoyed it. Still hesitating to buy the Backbone but I might not resist much longer. Also, I hardly ever comment on YT but seeing you reply to most comments and seeing how much you care about your viewers and their questions.. wow. Beyond being a good RUclipsr, I can tell you’re a great dude aswell. Please keep making videos like this one. +1 instant sub.
Aw man, I appreciate the encouraging words. Means a lot. I'll definitely try to keep the great content coming. And one of my favorite parts and reasons I got into RUclips in the first place was to engage with my community and help with the buying decisions and answer any questions they have. So welcome to the family Jeg, I'm very happy you are here and thanks for taking the time to let me know. What is making you hesitant about the Backbone one? Maybe I can add some clarification?
@@ThomasMuehler The content creators that take time to reply to their followers/watchers are getting rarer and rarer. I really needed to emphasize your engagement with your community as it’s really great to see such dedication. Well, the price is making me hesitate (120euros in France, which is roughly $120-125) and also my Wi-Fi connection. My room is separated from the router by multiple walls so the connection can’t be very stable and good overall, despite having fiber. My workaround is to use a Wi-Fi usb adapter/sharer on my computer (which doesn’t have a Wi-Fi card in it) and share the ethernet connection of the computer to my other devices (iPad, iPhone); thing is, I don’t know how Xbox Cloud Games would hold up with this connection. It goes around 90 to 110mbps, seems stable enough (I should still try a packet loss test service or something though) and I don’t know if it would be sufficient. I’m also quite picky with latencies in general, so I’m scared to buy the Backbone to find myself having a 500 or 1000ms latency between key input and seeing the character move. Tldr; would 90-110mbps Wi-Fi connection be good enough for Cloud Gaming? Is the backbone really a game changer? Thanks a lot for your time and replies.
@@GreatRank I think 90 - 110 mbps wi-fi connection (assuming low/no packet loss and a stable connection) would be more than enough. The number 30 mbps comes to my head (but I could be wrong about that) is what they recommend. They list it somewhere I just don't remember but the point being you should have more than enough speed wise. My recommendation is that I'm assuming you have an Xbox or PS5 controller already. Why not just connect your controller to your phone and then test it out? That way you can answer most of your questions and see if it works well. Then if it does you can decide if adding the controller would be worth the price paid. As the apps that allow you to do that are already available on your phone and don't require the backbone. The biggest thing the app does is puts everything in one place to go through and makes it seem more like a portable console over your phone. Personally, what kind of sold me on the device. Is that I had a bunch of family come over for Thanksgiving. We spent a lot of time doing nothing together in the same room. Multiple other family members were on their cell phones and/or hand held gaming devices (Switch) so it gave me some time to test it out and catch up on some games. As normally I wouldn't game when family was around and would engage with them more but they weren't about that life and just wanted to lounge and do nothing. Anyways long story short, I much preferred playing stuff on my phone with that device (as it kind of transforms it into a mini portable console/computer single unit) over using my iPad or something else (for portable use). Especially, since the screen on my iPhone 14 Pro Max is fantastic along with the speakers (or going with earbuds wired or wireless). Having something that is small, portable, and easy to take my phone in and out of as a single unit is unique. (FYI I don't use a case and if you do could cause some issues with fit. I can go more into that if you want later). And every time I use it I'm surprised at just how much it feels like a completely different device over just my phone. Where if I'm using a controller and my phone it just feels different and not one unit and meh overall. As I still need to put my phone on something and is more cumbersome. My biggest complaint is the small joysticks decrease a lot of precision. And I'm kind of obsessed with high accuracy and control both in PC and Console gaming. I have a hard time saying it is "game changing". But it is certainly a unique experience that I enjoy a lot when I do use. As I get very immersed quickly. And that is coming from someone who doesn't mobile game ever or like doing things on small screens. So if that is your jam easily worth it. The price tag seems a bit steep to me. I think $100 is a lot. But if it is on sale for like $50 - $75 easy win. If you play a lot of games on your phone or would use it a lot the $100 is likely worth it.
@@ThomasMuehler Thanks for the clear explanations. I’m more of a PC gamer than a console one but I’d really imagine myself using the Backbone with my mobile on my bed to chill and play some games with the great experience it seems to offer. I do already have an Xbox Controller with me, I’m about to test the Xbox Cloud Gaming once again this weekend to see if it improved since my last attempt; I believe the service has improved since then (last attempt was in March 2022 or something) and that workaround I found gives me a more stable connection, so it’s definitely worth trying, as you recommended. I gotta admit I did order the Backbone about 20 hours ago but didn’t feel that good about doing it; what you’re saying is reassuring. I’m not a hardcore mobile gamer but I feel like this is something I could really like if everything works well. And yeah, when family gatherings are all about smartphones in everyone’s hands, the Backbone will be a good time-killer. For the case, I’ve read and watched many reviews about the Backbone and did understand that mostly all the cases won’t work with the Backbone or, like you said, would cause some issues. I don’t plan on using it outside of my home (or someone else’s), so removing the case isn’t a big deal for me. As for the joysticks, I’ve read that elsewhere aswell and.. well, on one side this might be annoying for me too, on the other side, as long as you don’t play anything really competitive on your phone, it should be okay, although still frustrating in some ways. I did a packet loss test btw, and I’ve absolutely none, which is great news. I should receive the Backbone device this Monday and can’t wait to try it out! In the meantime, I’ll try Xbox Cloud Gaming once again with the Xbox Controller, but as I read somewhere (must’ve read about 50 reviews before ordering it lol), the latency will differ between the directly-connected Backbone and the Bluetooth Xbox Controller; like a lot, especially if you’re picky. I don’t know if there’s a good way to see how many milliseconds of latency you have when you play Xbox Cloud Gaming (on iPhone or iPad)? I’d really like to measure it. Thanks again mate.
@@GreatRank I haven’t tried the Xbox Cloud Gaming service so I don’t have anything to say about that. But I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it. As I am sensitive to latency as well. I’m sure there is a way to measure the latency of Xbox Cloud. But I’m not sure of a way to do it personally. I think you’ll enjoy the Backbone One. As it really is a neat device that works well. My greatest concern is mostly with cost as to me this is a luxury type of item over a necessary one. Which always makes me hesitant in recommendation. But I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on it once it comes in and you’ve had a chance to try it out. Joysticks are definitely personal preference. I was playing GTA III with them and it was just fine. I’m just the type of guy who buys Scuf controllers and makes sure that I have the long stick and everything on them. So, it is just something that is a rough transition from what I’m used to.
First off great review probably one of the most complete I’ve seen. One rebuttal though about your one “but” I completely Understand your point but. 2 points why I rather have this than carrying around your system controller 1. This is made to carry around and if you’re like me I’m not a fan of taking my system or any parts of it out of the house and 2. If you’re talking long term trips or just in general out and about the ps5 controller is battery powered where as backbone is phone power so you don’t have to worry about battery level
100% agree with you on that and excellent points. Thanks for sharing. If you are highly mobile and actually using this on the go then the Backbone is definitely superior. Especially, for the points you mentioned (keeping PS5 controller safe, not needing to charge, and smaller/easier to travel with as all-in-one unit). However, if you are just using it to game in another room I don't think it's as much of a win. But again, as you mentioned an all-in-one system is more convenient.
I decided to go for it on Black Friday ($65 instead of $100). Planning to use it away from home for Remote Play and also for controller support on mobile apps. I thought I read that the lightning port DOES allow you to send it to a larger display?
@@ybed06 Interesting. After your comment I wanted to look into this and test it out. Looks like you can use the controller on other devices (iPad, PC, Mac, etc.) but in order to do that you need to have the Backbone+ Membership. As you need to go into the settings of the Backbone One App (on your phone) and then select which one you are connecting to (PC, iPad, etc.) and then unplug your phone (or at least I did) and then plug in via lightning to USB-C (in the case of my iPad) and it worked. However, if I did NOT go into the Backbone One App settings first and just plugged it in it DID NOT work. Which is kind of frustrating and I think limits their controller a bit (as putting this behind a paywall is an interesting choice). I can make a quick short on it if you want. It also feels relatively responsive. I don't think it would work on an external display (as the controller itself isn't 'smart'). So it would have to be powered by your cell phones processor. Which I'm not sure is a thing quite yet. But interesting to think about nonetheless.
I recently picked one of these up. I have been so busy lately that gaming while away from home is my best option most days. I recently picked up a steam deck (which I absolutely adore) but was bummed to find out that it’s current capability for PlayStation Remote play is completely unusable. There have been times where I brought by PS5 controller with me to use remote play on another device that is more optimized for it, like my phone but bringing a controller around always feels a little clunky and I don’t want to have to worry about damaging or losing an expensive controller I use at home all the time. All that is to say I got the backbone and it makes playing my PS5 away from home a possibility for me. I think the backbone provides significantly improved portability over using a controller on the go and having to either find a place to prop up an already small screen or attaching one of those phone mounts to the controller I already don’t want to carry around. With the backbone I at least don’t have to worry about where to prop up my phone and its moderately more portable that my ps5 controller. I think the backbone is a great product but i completely agree on the price point. $100 is way too much and thankfully I managed to find one for a discounted price on facebook marketplace or else I would definitely pass. The analog sticks not being oriented like a dual sense is by no means a deal breaker but it is a bummer. I understand it would be expensive to manufacture another model when the Xbox style is perfectly usable on PlayStation but I do wish that they would just market the non PlayStation branded one as compatible with PlayStation instead of the PlayStation one just being a palette swap for the original model. Lastly I’m not sure if this applies to other models but with the iPhone 14 Pro Max you have to take your phone out of its case to fit it in and I don’t even a particularly large case. I’ve seems some 3D printed options to make it possible to keep a case on which would be nice and to be fair I’m not too worried that I’m going to drop my phone while it’s in the backbone, plus I keep a screen protector on my phone but its just a pain to have to take off my case and make sure I don’t lose it while playing a game away from home. If you can snag one discounted I think it’s a really handy device but I would definitely search for other options at $100
Man, I absolutely loved the rundown. Thanks for taking the time to share. First paragraph, all excellent points that I completely agree with. The portability factor of this is excellent and you don't have to worry about propping up or damaging a controller. But I find it WILD that a cell phone provides a better PS5 remote experience than the steam deck! That's crazy. Other points I also agree with. I never use a case so I don't have to worry about that. But I can totally understand how that would be irksome. But think if you were to drop the BackBone with your phone attached your phone should be fine. As I'd imagine the backbone would take the full impact unless if you somehow hit it perfectly right. As the back and sides would be covered and the thumbsticks should protect the screen. Also, excellent point about sale or third party. As getting this guy for $50 - $75 would be an easy win.
My main complaint is the ergonomics. The controller halves are too small. Particularly on the right side, I often feel I have to move my hands up to push button or down to use the thumb stick. A clip-on full size controller is way easier to use, even if it's not sized to just throw into a backpack. The Kishi has a Bluetooth vice controller that has handles and layout more similar to traditional controller, I might pickup one of those to see if it's a good middle ground. I also wish the case were sized to be used with a phone inserted. If I'm carrying it somewhere to play games, I'm probably leaving my phone connected, so the carrying case needs to accommodate the entire gaming device.
Just found out this weekend that you can connect the backbone one to iPads using usb-c to lightning cables. Not similar to connecting to a TV but bigger screen than the phone
You sure can. Unfortunately, they put it behind a paywall (as if you don't have the BackBone Membership you can't access the setting that makes it work). Which is kind of scummy but makes sense from a business perspective.
You can connect your backbone to an iPad, Mac or MacBook and use it as a controller with a separate monitor with a lightning. Not the same as any external monitor but it’s a start
That was one of my points in the video. The counter argument would be that a controller is bulkier and doesn't hold your phone. So you'd still have to mount your phone in some way. So having an all-in-one system is superior from a convenience/travel perspective. Plus some others have expressed concerns with damaging their controllers with travel. Where they are less worried about this.
I am also in my honey-moos phase with my backbone, but the form factor is a bit uncomfortable to me. Looking to upgrade to a more ergonomic option soon
Funny: Just when you were talking about having high speed internet connection I lost internet because I was watching this on the train and it went in a tunnel😅
I haven't tried it on an Airplane. Yes, it will work assuming you are playing offline (such as GTA Vice City). Or I suppose if you have Wireless on the plane that you could play online games but I'm not sure that would be fast enough to stream a game from PC/PS5. It would be interested to find out.
I am trying to figure out what games can I play with out remote play for example at work I don’t have my console there but I have break time out the wazoo so I’m trying too figure out can I play games like xenoverse 2 on the back home while I’m at work
If you have a good enough internet connection at home and at work, yes you should be ablje to play xenoverse 2 while at work via remote play. But you can test that out before you buy the controller if you'd like. And even play if you bring in an already owned controlled and pair it via bluetooth.
@@grandfatherrecords It does have to be remote play. As you can't download it onto your phone (unless if you can buy the game on mobile). As the only way you can play console games that you own is by playing them on your console and then "streaming" them to your phone via Remote Play. Another solution would be to purchase something like the ROG Ally. Where you could download the games directly. But that only counts for PC games you own. Not console. But allows you to play games while on the go as its essentially a handheld console/pc.
@@ThomasMuehler thank you. You’ve been a huge help in answering my questions. Been looking all over the whole internet just for these answers. And because of it I will subscribe my good sir thank you once again 🤍
Question🙋🏽♂️ When you say you leave your console in a low power mode are you talking about your PlayStation? I want to know if you can still use the Ps Remote play while the game in sleep mode.
I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. Yes, low-power mode was meant for the console as you need to wake it up from sleep (or already have it powered on) for remote play to work. Then it mirrors your entire console to your phone via the PS Remote Play app. Meaning that you have full access to your PlayStation. So, it should work just fine if the game was minimized and "sleeping".
Just bought this for my s23 ultra and the one thing I don't like is that in order to connect my phone I have to remove my otterbox case the back set doesn't even open up far enough to get over the case let alone plug in past the case not something I enjoy so much with a extremely expensive phone
It is certainly frustrating that you have to remove the case in order to get it to fit. Perhaps with the "Gen 2" version they will fix that. Which I haven't heard anything about. But just saying this is a common complaint that I hope they will address in the future. Thankfully, I think the controller would do a great job at protecting your phone in case you dropped both. But not willing to find out.
I’ve been watching a lot of reviews because I just this at the store. My only question would be, would it work for other mobile games? Like war robots, and sas zombie assault?
@@BossSauce123 The controller will work on any mobile game that supports controller. If the game doesn’t support controller then it won’t work. If it does it will. I haven’t played War Robots or Zombie Assault but you may know off the top of your head, otherwise I’d look at the store page, or google search it to confirm/deny. As for the subscription, it is completely optional, and is not required to make anything work. As the software just gives you some additional benefits from the BackBone Software such as chat (like xbox or PS chat but for Backbone) and some other minor things. It has nothing to do with updates to the controller itself. Also, any remote play (xbox or playstation) has their own dedicated app and has nothing to do with the BackBone App or Subscription.
Had a kishi 2 really liked it but it craps out a good bit and I notice latency sometimes with the cloud. Just got one of these on father's day sale with a protection plan lol so I can play codm and warzone mobile.
That was my mistake. I don’t know what I was thinking. Maybe since I’ve never gamed on my phone I just thought it was me with a controller so put it in the video. It doesn’t actually work. And that was me just using my phone. Confirmed just now. But did get another chicken dinner.
So if someone is on the playstation 5 playing say Fc24, can someone else use this device on their phone to play a different game. Because as a family we share the playstation 5, and wonder if you could play a different game on this moblie gaming if someone else is playing a game on the console.
Nice job great video keep it up🤘😎 I would really like to see a video about other controllers that work with iOS 16 for example I have the igega red knight controller and it doesn’t work anymore😢
If I'm being honest I probably won't be doing too many other controller reviews. Especially, in regards to IOS. Kind of wild that the Ipega Red Knight Controller doesn't work anymore.
@@ThomasMuehler it works with my old iPhone 6 with iOS 12.5 but everything over that is not working it’s so annoying it’s an OK controller and I really want to use it on my iPhone 11 but it’s not going to happen and I can really afford a backbone controller and it’s really hard to figure out which controller is supporting iOS 16 on the cheep side
@@onkelhiphop Doesn't it connect via Bluetooth? So does it just not connect? Or does it connect and then just not respond? The backbone will plug in directly. So it will work. And I'd wait for a sale where it is around $50 instead of $100.
If you have the backbone do you have to turn your PlayStation on for the backbone to work or play games on it ??? And if you have a ps4 and a ps5 can you transfer it
So, the Backbone itself is just a controller for your phone. That's it. It can play phone games on your phone without a console. If you are wanting to us PS Remote Play. Then yes, you need to have your PlayStation on and connected in order to "play through the cloud" essentially. Where it will mirror whatever is on your PlayStation to your phone so you can play games. You can do this without the Backbone one as well to try out if you wish and then use a spare controller to connect to your phone if you are interested in what it is like. Did that makes sense? It's kind of strange.
You know, I've gotten this question a few times now. The more I think about it the more I believe I made an error. Where I don't think I was actually using a controller... I honestly can't recall. I do remember winning because they put me in a bot lobby. And that my movement and aim was reminiscent of bots but just slightly better hence the win. lol. I've got a new phone since that time and the box (along with the adapter I would need to test it as I got the bigger size iPhone) exists somewhere in my storage room but I'm unsure where which makes testing difficult. Also, according to Google PUBG doesn't support controller. And I wouldn't have done anything special to "hack" it so that it works. If it wasn't plug and play then I didn't do it.
@@ThomasMuehler Thank you for the clarification...I've been playing PUBG Mobile since Season 2 and have tried to emulate a controller feel on my phone with attachable triggers, etc. I've always hoped they would come out with some form of controller support so when I heard your comment it really threw me. I just ordered the Backbone they released yesterday for Android phones. PUBG Mobile supported or not, I look forward to experiencing its performance in comparison to my Razer Kishi. Big selling point: that 3.5 headphone jack. Not a big fan of any sound latency resulting from the use of wireless headphones/earbuds. Thanks for your review video and response...you just earned yourself another subscriber.
@@Ryptyd My apologizes for the misinformation. I don't like to spread that kind of stuff. I can't believe they don't support it. But hopefully some day. Also, welcome to the family Iam Ryptyd (love the name). I'm very happy you are here.
I mean, it basically tranforms your phone into a switch that does pc, xbox and playstaion. If you look at the controller layout compared to switch joycons it's practically identical
@@ThomasMuehler Since you're here, lol. Has it held up well since you got it? Have you had any problems with drift, sticky buttons or lose triggers? Maybe we need an update video.
@@michaelburgess6004I wish I could be more help, but honestly, I haven't used it enough for signs of wear and tear to set in to have an update video or answer your questions effectively. But in general I don't tend to need to replace controllers like ever. Usually the only time I get a new controller is when a new system releases. Even when I was maining console only gaming.
That is a simple question but a complicated answer. In some instance you won't be able too. Others you'll need to increase the settings on the host device (your PC). But then with it doing stuff over the air it can cause a loss in quality. Last, if your internet isn't super fast it can give you some issues as well.
All was correct until you got to the "Switch account" part which is where you lost me. As far as I know Nintendo is stingy AF and won't allow anything other than their own consoles to play their games. So, you would not have access or the ability to play Nintendo Switch games on your phone.
@@ThomasMuehler I wanted to buy this for my grandson which his switch is broke He’s account is still active He’s dad said his card reader doesn’t work Needs digital So I thank you again 🤗🤗💋💋
Yes. So technically, your PS5 is playing the game, then it is being streamed to your phone. Where others are also playing on console. If that makes sense.
Nope either edition will work. As technically you don’t need the backbone at all. Just the PS5 Remote app. But the Backbone makes it an easier experience.
It fits my iPhone 14 Pro Max. But the camera bump makes it a bit tight and not as snug as smaller phones. And that is without a case. I don't own the 15 Pro Max or Galaxy S23 so I can't tell you for sure. But with it fitting the 14 Pro Max I would assume the 15 Pro Max should fit seeing as it is a wee bit smaller. But keep in mind that the 15 Pro Max has USB-C now not Lightning so make sure you buy the right one.
I haven't tried the Razer Kishi V2 so I don't know the differences. I'd watch some reviews and see if there is a comparison and then go with whichever one checks more boxes for you. I'd imagine they both are going to be extremely similar.
Honestly, I didn't look into that feature. As I A. Don't have friends that play on PS5 so can't test the party function and B. Don't play online games on PS5. However, you can test this yourself. As you'd be using the PS Remote Play App on your phone. Then connect that to your console. Then you could try to joint a match and communicate with your teammates. As that would be how you would do it with the Backbone with the only exception is have a controller over not.
if you have a game fully downloaded to your phone does it work with that or does it have to be the ps app and do I need a playstation for it to work like lets say I can get resident evil village on the iPhone app store can I use the backbone with it without internet on long road trips for when internet is in and out ? does anybody would like to know before I buy it.
1. You don't need to use the PS App or have a PlayStation to play non-PS games. For example, COD Mobile. However, if you are trying to play a PlayStation Game (Horizon Forbidden West) you do need a PS5 console and PS App so it can stream to your phone and be controlled with BackBone. 2. Any mobile game that is downloaded to your phone, supports controller, and does not require internet connection (for example GTA Vice City) can be played with Backbone without an internet connection. 3. I am not aware of Resident Evil Village being able to be played off iPhone directly. As it doesn't have enough horsepower to run it. Unless if I am missing that there is a mobile version. But if you are talking about the PlayStation version. You would NOT be able to play that without an internet connection. As the way this works is Your PlayStation 5 Conole boots up and you start Resident Evil Village ---> You then open the PS App on your iPhone ----> You connect your PS App and Playstation 5 Console together via a fast internet connection ---> Your PS5 sends the screen information to your phone so you can see what is happening. Your iPhone/Backbone sends the controllers inputs to the Playstation so your character can move. Meaning that your console is still playing the game and you can see it react in your room with your Playstation. As it is just screen mirroring. So without an internet connection none of that is possible.
That is a great question. I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. But technically the PS5 is playing the game, then it is streaming the video to your phone, when is accepting inputs from the controller itself, and then relaying it back through your phone over the air back to the PS5. So, if you were doing a multiplayer game that would accept two controllers to be attached and used at the same time I want to say yes? But I'm not sure as I didn't test it. As I would think it would see the backbone as another controller. But the person on the backbone would likely be at a disadvantage as they are streaming which adds latency. If you are asking if you could play one game on the PS5 and have another person on the backbone playing the same PS5 on a different game the answer is no. It doesn't work like that.
I've heard that there is a service for Xbox that you can sign up for where you can use an Xbox on the "cloud". Making me think that you are essentially renting an Xbox and have a membership for certain games that allows this to work. But I have not looked into it or tried it out myself so can't speak from personal experience. Just something I've heard in my comment section. I am not aware of one for PS5. If those don't exist then yes you would need a console.
Yes. As it is just a controller that plugs into your phones lightning port. The other features are all done by your phone and don't need the controller. So as long as the game you are playing doesn't require internet it would work just fine.
Thank you so much and just to clarify if I have for example Diablo 4 in my PS5 I can play that on my phone with the backbone without wifi/data on my cellphone, correct? So I will use wifi only for online games like Fortnite etc?
@@albertpepper1 I've had a hard time explaining this. My apologies. No. That won't work. You can play any game that is downloaded locally on your cell phone and does not require an internet connection. In order to connect to the PS5 you need to do that through the internet. As through the app on your phone it establishes a connection to your PS5 and then mirrors the screen sending that data over your internet connection. Does that make sense?
I made a mistake. I don't think pubg supports controllers. Even though I showed gameplay of it. I don't usually game on my phone and just many mistakes were made on my part.
This controller is only okay if your phone is not iPhone 13 pro or 14 line up, otherwise that adapter will leave a tiny tilt which I do not like as long term will most definitely cause issues with the lightning connector
@@frecklefaceclyde yes i have an ip12 & this controller. mobile gaming feels like a console gaming w this controller on 🔥but I mostly play stadia & xcloud
You need: 1. PS5 in Rest Mode or On at home 2. Wi-fi at home that is fast enough. 3. Wi-fi/Cellular network that is fast enough where you are remotely. 4. If you don't have unlimited data on cellular I do not advise that. As you could blow through your data cap fast.
I’ve got the same phone and I don’t see much of an issue with it. I make sure to put in the top first and then the bottom and it seems to fit pretty well.

The Adapter that it comes with is mostly for phones with large camera bumps to give it enough on the back while still staying latched. I don't own a 13 so I'm not sure how big the bump is on that one.
As long as you have a strong internet connection on your iPhone (either from mobile data or wireless internet wherever you are) it should work just fine.
So would this be ideal if I only have 1 console, ps5 and my girlfriend and I would like to play Fortnite together would I be able to log into a second account from backbone?
I love the idea. Unfortunately, I don't think that would work in the real world. As Backbone just Mirrors your PS5. It doesn't make it a new console. I don't think I explained that well... ummm... On a laptop if you plug it into a monitor you can "Mirror" the Display. Meaning anything you are doing on your laptop screen is "mirrored" or the "same" as on the bigger screen. They are dependent on each other. That is what Backbone does. Where what you would want to do is "Extend" that second account to Backbone. Which would be EPIC. But you'd need a second console. As that would mean your PS5 would need to render the same game twice independently. Which it isn't powerful enough to do (which is why local split screen isn't a thing anymore as hardware limitations make it impossible as games have gotten too complicated and powerful). Now if you had a PS5 and she had a PS5 at her house you could play one PS5 and she could play the OTHER PS5 at her house and you both be in the same room. Assuming you both have strong enough internet connections. Does that make sense?
As someone without a console, I'm looking for a cheaper alternative that still allows me to game. Would you recommend I get a backbone? Or would something else like a Nintendo switch be a better option (although on the pricier end)?
If you don't have a console, then the Backbone One will only work for MOBILE GAMES that support controller. If that is the type of game you are wanting to play then it would work well. However, if you are wanting a better gaming experience (I say that as I think mobile games compared to modern games are very different) then the Nintendo Switch is going to be a better option. As you'll have "real games" that you can play. So it really comes down to your preference. Backbone One is going to be mobile games only. But gives you better control and advatange in them as you have a controller over others that are using their phones screen. But is redudant in the sense that it isn't needed to play but adds quality of life. But the game has to support it (as not all do. For example PUBG does not support controllers). Whereas, if you want a more classic gaming experience then the Nintendo Switch.
Not just mobile games. If you sign up to Xbox Game Pass (£10 per month or so) you can play a lot of Xbox games via the cloud without needing a console. Halo, Age of Empires, even Goldeneye and Microsoft Flight Simulator all available via Game Pass
@@ThomasMuehler No just a subscription as I mention above. It’s £10.99 per month for me. I own a console but don’t need for Xbox games that are in the cloud. Halo Infinite is one game I have played on my phone a few times.
I understand where you are coming from. It would be nice to get extra battery life while playing games and/or the ability to use the controller when not plugged in. But it would also add cost, weight, require extra engineering, and would be another thing to remember to charge.
Does this only work if you have a ps5? Because I have a ps4 and would love to play rdr2 on the go, but I heard that you can only play your games if you have a ps5..
According to Google and Playstation’s website it also works on PS4. You can try it out without the BackBone by downloading the PS Remote App and trying it out.
That was a mistake on my end. I wasn't actually using the BackBone. But was an idiot who recorded some game play and since I never play mobile games thought it was me using the Backbone. But have confirmed that it does not work. You can kind of move your right joystick (but it is exceedingly slow) and everything else DOES NOT work.
If you don't have service then you can't use remote play. But you'd still be able to play any games on your phone (that are downloaded to your phone and do not require internet to play).
I think that depends. As it is really circumstantial to me. 1. Are you playing mobile games either at home or on the go? If yes, this is excellent for that. As it just connects to your iPhone and is small and portable. 2. Or buying it for the remote play? Again, depending on situation. 3. If you already have a tablet and a PS5/Xbox controller you may get a better experience with that. As you can do everything this can do with that. 4. Again, if you have a controller and aren't going to be traveling a lot then it may give a better experience. So, after talking that through I think what I'm saying is if you are A. playing mobile games. B. playing said games on the go or at home then yes adding a controller is worth it over just your phone. This shines as it is low profile and an all in one device.
Thanks man for response I like that!! Another thing, so my ps5 is our go to for all our services we run through in living room..can I still play that on day a phone or tablet while wife watches tv on ps5? Hah I know it’s a lot & can I hook this bad boy up to Amazon hd10 tablet
I'm sorry for the late reply. I didn't get a notification so didn't see it until now. No, if you're using Remote Play it simply Mirrors whatever is happening on your PS5. So, you can't be playing a game while she is watching something on the same device. Also, the Backbone works via plugging into the Lightning port so it wouldn't work on an Amazon HD10 Tablet. However, as long as the processor is strong enough and they offer the App you could download the PS Remote App on your Tablet and play that way without a controller (or add a controller via Bluetooth to your tablet).
Great question. I have no idea as I don't have an android phone to test. A problem I see is that since it is a spring that compresses the phone in place I'd be concerned that depending on the adapter that it would be too thin causing instability. But I do believe they have released an Android version.
@@ThomasMuehler yup I noticed they released android version. But the playstation edition looks sick. Too bad it's iphone compatible only. Honestly the answer to that question is the deciding factor for me. Will you please test and post it in YT Shorts or anything. Would love to hear back.
@@aidilazhar6552 It does look great so I get it. And unfortunately, no I can't test it. As again, I don't have an android phone or any small USB-C device to test it. Or else I would.
@@aidilazhar6552 Arguably that is is a better option. Not as portable but will give you a better experience (as it is a superior controller just by being larger). Not saying this is a bad one. Just the joysticks are shorter and so on to make it portable.
You can play mobile games from your phone and Backbone (assuming it has controller support). But in order to play any PC games you need to have a PC and to play PS5 games you need to have a PS5 as the "remote play" only streams the game from your primary device (PC or PS5). But doesn't actually run the game. If you've ever casted something from your phone to a smart TV or similar. It is the same thing just reversed.
That is correct. This does not grant you access to that portfolio of games. Just allows you to remotely connect to your console. I do think their may be subscriptions that you can buy that allow you access to a console via the cloud that may work if you didn't own a console and wanted to play a specific game. But seeing as I haven't tried that I don't know how that works. As I think there is a way to do that with PC but unsure of consoles are included with that or not.
I thought it was strange you didn't mention my use case but then I realized how old this review was. I have the Android version and use it exclusively for emulation.
Perhaps. As mentioned in the video it depends on internet speed. So if you car (or really your phone) has a good connection, high speeds, and unlimited data then yes it should theoretically work. But if internet is spotty or has large latency then the connection could be lost and/or unplayable.
I've been that dude that brings his controller around and TBH.. I think I will pick up the backbone just because the ease of lounging around with the fam without having to awkwardly position my phone etc.. lmao
I think that is an excellent plan. I did that when we had a bunch of family over and everyone was on their respective phones/gaming devices. And it worked great for that.
How do you not have unlimited data? Buy a phone from anywhere that is unlocked and take it to metro pcs. 40 bucks a month unlimited everything and internet speed is terrific. You even get a unlimited Hotspot.
Great question and something I should have thought of. No, it does not fit. Or at least from my limited testing as I only own one case (which I never use) for my iPhone and it is quite thin and DOES NOT fit. Making me high skeptical that anything else would fit.
That would be nice. Or Nintendo to stop being jerks and just allow us to play their games on something other than the Switch. Not including Emulators but like officially by them with handhelds like the ROG Ally or Steam Deck.
FUCK thats kinda sick that finally theres a controller that can have cases but then again the subscription, the price tag all that kinda rubs me the wrong way
@@vsevolod8879 arguably with it already being compact adding a case would add bulk and make it less convenient. But I understand where you’re coming from.
@@ThomasMuehler if you constantly take it out of the case, there is a risk of scratching it, given the fragility of the apple coating, this is a human factor, and the place from where the person does not matter.
@@vsevolod8879 I was going down a completely different road. You're saying does the controller come with a case for your phone. Not does the controller have a case to hold it in. I think if you use a thin case it will work. I also think the coating is more durable than you think. As I have video on my channel of using my iPhone for two years and it doesn't have any scratches. But I do agree that it depends on the user and there is always inherent risk.
Yes. To explain fully. 1. He would have to have his PS5 ON at his house. Along with turning on the ability for remote play. 2. He would need to have a strong internet connection at his house. 3. At your house he would need to be connected to your network on his phone. Which would also have to be strong. 4. Then you should be able to use the application on the phone to connect to the PS5 and play remotely. However, with it going through the internet connection there would be some lag associated with it. But yes according to my understanding that should work just fine. If it works or does not work I would love to hear.
No, you don't. As this will allow you to play any mobile game that supports controllers (which is the main selling point). So COD for mobile or similar. But you can remote into your console (if you have one) and play it remotely if you so wish. Which I go over in the review. Does that makes sense?
@@ThomasMuehler yeah, I was about a minute and some change into watching it. I kept looking and watching videos before yours and no one addressed my question but once I fully watched your video, I got my answer. Thanks!
@@triscuitthebold3868 I believe that Xbox has "cloud gaming" which at one point was through Stadia. Which I think is no more? I'm not completely sure. With the "Cloud Gaming" from microsoft you can play PC games and I believe console via the cloud for a subscription each month (meaning you don't need to own one as you kind of lease one through the cloud). I don't believe PlayStation has something like that. But I could be wrong and Google would be helpful. As personally, that isn't something I'm super into so haven't researched it all that much.
This is wild. I have now had three of the same exact comments within an hour of each other. lol No, this will work just fine without a console. As it is just a controller for your cell phone which allows you to have a controller for any mobile game that supports controller. No console needed. If you happen to have a console and you so wish you can remote into it to also play those games on your phone. Assuming you have everything needed and set it up correctly. I go over the pros/cons of that in the video.
I'm curious on what you will do? Would you buy the Backbone One? Or just use your consoles controller?
I will purchase the backbone since i like to play on my phone while I’m outside hanging with friends

I think the main point of Backbone One is that it's wired, therefore no lag. It's also the only controller that has a 3.5mm jack. The subscription features are pointless.
Agreed.
Finally.. a review that talks about the triggers. Was hoping it was a trigger and not a button. Thank you for the review kind sir 🙏🏽
Happy to help!
Interesting thought.
Watched the whole video and really enjoyed it. Still hesitating to buy the Backbone but I might not resist much longer.

Update: the product description on Amazon says you can use the port to plug into “iPad, PC or Mac to play on a larger display” but not TV…
Dude you’re hilarious 😂😂 first vid I’ve seen and it was good! Thanks for your review

Top notch review dude! Enjoyed every second of your video. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I'm glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for letting me know it helps a lot on future videos of what I should keep doing or not.
I think all of the things you mentioned are fair criticisms that I would completely agree with.
Ordered the back bone one for iPhone originally ordered the portal and was out of stock so gone for this instead great video and thanks for the review
@@ThomasMuehler I still have my trial for it but that definitely sucks
You can connect your backbone to an iPad, Mac or MacBook and use it as a controller with a separate monitor with a lightning. Not the same as any external monitor but it’s a start
Great points!
One caveat, at least last time I checked, in order for it to work you need to have a Backbone Subscription to enable that functionality.
Why buy that when you can Bluetooth your phone to your Xbox or ps controller?
That was one of my points in the video. The counter argument would be that a controller is bulkier and doesn't hold your phone. So you'd still have to mount your phone in some way. So having an all-in-one system is superior from a convenience/travel perspective. Plus some others have expressed concerns with damaging their controllers with travel. Where they are less worried about this.

They added a feature to connect it to a monitor and looked it behind a paywall
That is a real bummer. Thanks for letting us know.
@@ThomasMuehler but it has to be remote play correct? Will it disconnect though? My ps5 and work are about 49 minutes away from each other
@@grandfatherrecords It does have to be remote play.
Just ordered my backbone, few days ago and was lookin for reviews on it good review
I'm excited for you. I would love to hear your thoughts once you've tried it out.
I’ve been watching a lot of reviews because I just this at the store. My only question would be, would it work for other mobile games? Like war robots, and sas zombie assault?
Also, I don’t have to pay the subscription in order to keep the remote up to date or not
@@BossSauce123 The controller will work on any mobile game that supports controller.
Thank you so much

So if someone is on the playstation 5 playing say Fc24, can someone else use this device on their phone to play a different game.
Because as a family we share the playstation 5, and wonder if you could play a different game on this moblie gaming if someone else is playing a game on the console.
No. Because all your console is doing is sending the image to your phone. It is still playing the game. So you can only play one game at a time.
Nice job great video keep it up🤘😎 I would really like to see a video about other controllers that work with iOS 16 for example I have the igega red knight controller and it doesn’t work anymore😢

Quick question (if you are still fielding questions from 2 month old videos!): how did you play PUBG Mobile utilizing this controller?

I know for the external monitor if it has Airplay that's a way of doing besides that you really can't connect to anything
True Airplay may work. But I would worry greatly about latency there. Also, with it stacking things I'm not sure if that would work well if at all.
How can I make the picture and game play quality look better ?
That is a simple question but a complicated answer. In some instance you won't be able too. Others you'll need to increase the settings on the host device (your PC). But then with it doing stuff over the air it can cause a loss in quality. Last, if your internet isn't super fast it can give you some issues as well.

With this controller
All I would have to do is
Download backbone app
And sign into my switch account
Right
All was correct until you got to the "Switch account" part which is where you lost me. As far as I know Nintendo is stingy AF and won't allow anything other than their own consoles to play their games. So, you would not have access or the ability to play Nintendo Switch games on your phone.

Nope either edition will work. As technically you don’t need the backbone at all. Just the PS5 Remote app. But the Backbone makes it an easier experience.
@@ThomasMuehler thanks man, keep up the good work 🤟🏻
Does the backbone fit iPhone 15 pro max or galaxy s23 ultra?
It fits my iPhone 14 Pro Max. But the camera bump makes it a bit tight and not as snug as smaller phones. And that is without a case.
I don't own the 15 Pro Max or Galaxy S23 so I can't tell you for sure. But with it fitting the 14 Pro Max I would assume the 15 Pro Max should fit seeing as it is a wee bit smaller. But keep in mind that the 15 Pro Max has USB-C now not Lightning so make sure you buy the right one.
Which one should I get for my iPhone 12?
This will work for your iphone 12.

Did you watch the video?
It's a controller that plugs into your cellphone. It does not have a stand.
I can’t decide between the backbone one ps edition or Razer kishi v2! What should I get? (Won’t make any subscription.)
I haven't tried the Razer Kishi V2 so I don't know the differences. I'd watch some reviews and see if there is a comparison and then go with whichever one checks more boxes for you. I'd imagine they both are going to be extremely similar.
@@ThomasMuehler ok thank you so much
Sorry if I missed it but, so can I go on a party chat and join my friends on a COD match ? I have a ps5
As the way this works is
Your PlayStation 5 Conole boots up and you start Resident Evil Village ---> You then open the PS App on your iPhone ----> You connect your PS App and Playstation 5 Console together via a fast internet connection ---> Your PS5 sends the screen information to your phone so you can see what is happening. Your iPhone/Backbone sends the controllers inputs to the Playstation so your character can move. Meaning that your console is still playing the game and you can see it react in your room with your Playstation. As it is just screen mirroring. So without an internet connection none of that is possible.
Can you still play on the ps5 while the other person use a backbone to play as well?
Can you play Xbox/PS games despite not having a PS or Xbox?
I've heard that there is a service for Xbox that you can sign up for where you can use an Xbox on the "cloud". Making me think that you are essentially renting an Xbox and have a membership for certain games that allows this to work. But I have not looked into it or tried it out myself so can't speak from personal experience. Just something I've heard in my comment section. I am not aware of one for PS5. If those don't exist then yes you would need a console.
Hi I have a question! Can I use the Backbone without wifi?
@thomasmuehler. I just bought the 2nd gen backbone and was wondering how to go bout setting up the controls for pubg mobile.
I made a mistake. I don't think pubg supports controllers. Even though I showed gameplay of it. I don't usually game on my phone and just many mistakes were made on my part.

No.

The Adapter that it comes with is mostly for phones with large camera bumps to give it enough on the back while still staying latched. I don't own a 13 so I'm not sure how big the bump is on that one.
I am curious how remote play would work while away from home.
As long as you have a strong internet connection on your iPhone (either from mobile data or wireless internet wherever you are) it should work just fine.
I’ll be getting one for my Xbox games as they carry backbone for both at GameStop and Best Buy
Awesome, I’m exited for you. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it once you try it out.
@@Sam-qj2fk Very true. But doesn't that require a specific membership?
@@ThomasMuehler No just a subscription as I mention above. It’s £10.99 per month for me. I own a console but don’t need for Xbox games that are in the cloud. Halo Infinite is one game I have played on my phone a few times.
@@Sam-qj2fk Interesting. Thanks for clarifying.
I don't know why this thing doesn't have a built in battery.

When you are using remote play it will actually be playing on your console/TV or PC/Monitor. Which is what I was showing in the video.
Ik I need ps remote play but if I wanted to use it on a road trip with no service, would I still be able to?
If you don't have service then you can't use remote play. But you'd still be able to play any games on your phone (that are downloaded to your phone and do not require internet to play).
@@ThomasMuehler thanks! Love your channel btw🔥
I appreciate the kind words! Very much appreciated.
Sooo thinking of grabbing this thing, is it worth it?
Serious question, does it work on android using lightning-to-usb-c adapter?
Great question. I have no idea as I don't have an android phone to test. If I understand is that you have to have a ps5 to be able to access your games from the backbone.
It is the same thing just reversed.
so if i dont have a xbox, playstation or pc then i cant play games that are on those consoles?
That is correct. This does not grant you access to that portfolio of games. Just allows you to remotely connect to your console. I do think their may be subscriptions that you can buy that allow you access to a console via the cloud that may work if you didn't own a console and wanted to play a specific game. But seeing as I haven't tried that I don't know how that works. As I think there is a way to do that with PC but unsure of consoles are included with that or not.
I thought it was strange you didn't mention my use case but then I realized how old this review was. I have the Android version and use it exclusively for emulation.

But I do agree that it depends on the user and there is always inherent risk.
support playing PUBG or not ??
It does not. That was a mistake I made in the video. My apologizes.
I’m like…what is stream link…?
Steam
Ah man, I didn't know I made that mistake. Glad you got it figured out though and thanks for bringing it to my attention.
So if his PlayStation 5 is at his house he could come to my house and play his games at my house. With this back boneone
Do I have to have a console to use this?
No, you don't. As this will allow you to play any mobile game that supports controllers (which is the main selling point). So COD for mobile or similar. But you can remote into your console (if you have one) and play it remotely if you so wish. Which I go over in the review. Does that makes sense?
@@ThomasMuehler yeah, I was about a minute and some change into watching it. I kept looking and watching videos before yours and no one addressed my question but once I fully watched your video, I got my answer. Thanks!
@@sheeshman23 I'm glad you stuck with it! Appreciate the support.
It says you can play Xbox and google stadia games without a console but what about PlayStation games
So you have to have a console already or this won’t work?
This is wild. I have now had three of the same exact comments within an hour of each other. lol
No, this will work just fine without a console.
The blue tooth connection doesn't work as well honestly
I haven't tried it much. Sorry to hear that!
@@ThomasMuehler
I meant Bluetooth connection from controllers doesn't work as seamless as the Backbone.
@@toddpace4588 Gotcha. That makes more sense.
Just cast it to a tv if you want it on a bigger screen away from Home there will be lag but it's do able
Idea of plugging to tv would be sick !!!
Right?!
