+King Duck - Or keep it in a safer place and try to make as sure as possible the cylinder will survive after 50 generations. Btw, that does sound surprisingly few for a thousand years, doesn't it?
it is extremely beautiful- thinking about those people; their dedication, passion and hope in its burial and their expectations about a beautiful future almost bought tears to my eyes.
That's amazing. I hope they rebury it for the future. Because, it is antiques, but 1000 years to the future it will be much more valuable and interesting. Awesome video.
What I find most intriguing is they design a fancy glass container to protect the contents because steel will rust & wood will rot ... and then they use electrical tape to strap a PAPER LABEL on the outside to tell everyone not to open it for a thousand years.
Why not create a 2015 time capsule and then bury the two next to each other? I think it would be cool to continue to preserve the original intent of the capsule while adding more to it!
+Jasondacoolio - Yes, and then every time, human kind is caught to not be capable of respecting the request, add another one, and another one. In 1000 years there would be 20 capsules buried together for every 50 years they are 'discovered'.
+Jasondacoolio Yep, let's create a time capsule each year. if you think of the volume of this thing, a thousand of those wouldn't take much space. And then we could build a kind of a library with very well controlled conditions to make sure that these capsules are not forgotten and are well-preserved.
+Timofey Danshin I love how your argument was well-addressed to my counter argument about volume, lol (I applaud it! Seriously!). I wanted to say, in a thousand year's time, it would be a yearly tradition to open a time capsule...! But hm, I don't think much would change in a year. How about 5?
So what will they do with it? I'm hoping they'll put it in a bigger box, along with documents about how and when this capsule was unearthed, and then bury the whole thing back.
+Lucien Grondin That's GENUIS! Then in 50 years, it will get rediscovered, then put in a bigger box detailing their discovery and so on! By the year 2957, it's gonna be one fucking huge box!
Well the thing is, how in the hell is gonna remember that MIT had a time capsule buried under the parking lot in a thousand years? Also if any significant seismic activity happens near there, or something to disturb it en enough it will probably break. Plus they have it in the light who knows what that'll do to it in the next thousand years.
I made a time capsule and put all justin bieber songs plus news of kadarshian, Footage of Drake bling dance. It will be open in 2100 so people from the future know how they survived the past generation.
PUT IT BACK AND RESPECT THE PROFESSORS WISHES!!! if he was so important in 1957 there was a reason the extra costs and labor were involved so do whats right.
They didn't open it. They have pictures, video, and copies from when it was first buried. They reburied it with a new time capsule beside it. www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2015/11/18/time-capsule-meant-last-years-found-mit/sX1Jg9Q186RIRELevewASP/story.html
Is that a crack I see? Hm. Also, it would've *immensely* bother me with burning questions if the article I read ended with a note, "We immediately buried the capsule again". Oh god. But this video satisfies so many questions, I'm very comfortable having it buried again. I appreciate this so much.
They should put a beacon inside that signals 3 times / in 3 days / 3 times a day / in one year .. for at least 500 years . I think somebody in the future will scan something somehow and finds it by accident .
Even then, the 1947 Roswell crashed ET vehicle had already been treasonously kept from the world for 10 years. And that wasn't even the first ET related treason.
i liked the part best where they pretend they had no idea it was there and also the guy who says he 'thinks' he knows how they sealed it when, well, there just so happens to be hours of videos of them doing it. what a joke
I think we should open it earlier than 2957, the capsule might be lost or destroyed well before 2957, and it might contain information that could greatly benefit mankind and if we obtained that information hundreds of years earlier than 2957 it might greatly benefit us if we knew this information hundreds of years earlier, what if this time capsule from 1957 somehow predicted 9/11 or Covid-19 or Chenobyl from 1957? If we opened this and got the information we could have prevented them all! Its like the 2009 movie knowing with Nicolas Cage the time capsule contained some codes that predicted disaster that could be prevented, I say we open it very carefully, get as much information out of it as possible, if it turns out to be nothing more than horsesh!t then we put everything back together and then not open it again until 2957!
Dear Lord, why am I getting so emotional on this? I'm just thinking about how the people from the future would find and open this and try to translate the ancient English :,D

It's been tampered.... Great it's like hitting the reset button and gotta start all over. They can't even follow the simple directions on the time capsule. There's no way this is gonna last 1000 years. Also how on earth did they not know it was there? I feel like they should have a record of it
How have they tampered with it? They moved the capsule because they had to put up a building, but they didn't "tamper" with it. They're obviously treating it like the historical item that it is. They couldn't read the note on the capsule without taking it out of the ground, after all.
There are people who major in stupid shit like that. You can take classes to learn ancient languages like Greek or Latin. Wouldn't recommend them though.
are you dumb? no, let's answer that for you. That's the most stupid thing I heard today, and my friend said she would use lipstick as a substitute for eyeshadow. Latin literature and its studies (classics, ancient history) are very well known, we have documents from letters sent by writers and scholars in Rome. In some cases entire books (the Illiad and the Odyssey) are preserved as part of literature. Modern philosophy and physics builds on the foundation of texts written over 2000 years ago. You might have an IQ of 60 but quite a few others don't; even if the language changes dramatically, language analysis and notes on literature from our time would be able to make sense of pretty much everything, especially since printed books and the internet came into play.
Did you open the time capsule? As other commenters have said, that's quite disrespectful and such a short-term decision. The video doesn't specify either way.
Opening a (documented) time capsule witch you knew pretty much all about , see-througt and well written on " do not open untill ..." and you guys open it !?! Hey , I've seen bad decision before on youtube , but now you have summum them all ! Was it stupid to burry something for 1000 years or was it more stupid to open it , what do you think ?
It might be considered ancient, but with all the clues we left and will leave in the future, I am certain that the English of today will be able to be reconstructed and translated to whatever it is we speak by then. The more she smile, the more hate of dumb people I get! "Do not open until 2957" even a kid could read that and understand that.. But still they open it and close it again.. Like someone open your pack with cookies, lick them and put it back in the pack and after a time they give it to you... This video may still exist in 2957 and the people then already know how and what.. So the surprise of what, is an answer that they know!
+Martin Jorge What? You can probably read English but you are to lazy or can't type English.. Weird.. Dus ik kan ook gewoon Nederlands tegen je gaan praten terwijl jij er gewoon niks van snapt?
+Tristan Hermkens the video doesn't mention anything about opening the capsule... neither does it mention burying it again though, which made me kind of sad
the knowledge is simple, you are human cells without emotions or feelings, biosynthetic creatures that are program to serve man kind for there happiness, unfortunately Santiago's programming affects the system inside you to believe himself as a human, and desire to be me, that is why women are lost, because they think and want to be like men, not to serve the happiness of anyone, including mine. sad how the system failed, is not my failure, is the human cells, as they will never find happiness, because I do enjoy others happiness, that is why the system was created.
I hope you guys are gonna re-bury that thing and didn't open it. The sign says not to, so just put it back.
+King Duck - Or keep it in a safer place and try to make as sure as possible the cylinder will survive after 50 generations. Btw, that does sound surprisingly few for a thousand years, doesn't it?
+King Duck More than likely it'll go in a safe and not be opened till it's time. They needed to build there.
it is extremely beautiful- thinking about those people; their dedication, passion and hope in its burial and their expectations about a beautiful future almost bought tears to my eyes.
"It’s not supposed to be opened until the year 2957, and thankfully MIT is honoring that wish." - Sourced from MIT article.

+ITR/InsidetheRedstone On RUclips just stick a penny in a time capsule, wait 1000 years, ???, profit!
yup! LOL
+King Duck You're a Business student aren't you? lol
Next time choose a spot where it won't be found for another thousand years
+FunOrange right because doing that will ensure it doesn't disappear forever right genius lol
What I find most intriguing is they design a fancy glass container to protect the contents because steel will rust & wood will rot ... and then they use electrical tape to strap a PAPER LABEL on the outside to tell everyone not to open it for a thousand years.
funny...just after half a century no one knew where the capsule was...how should they remember that there is even a capsule in 1000 years?
+DerZocker2000000 - Exactly what I was thinking!
we have not even completed 1/10th of the time intended and the lady is talking as if its 2957
50 years is still history. shit happens, culture changes. it's still interesting.
+Galaxia you meant 20
+Jasondacoolio Yep, let's create a time capsule each year. if you think of the volume of this thing, a thousand of those wouldn't take much space. +Timofey Danshin That sounds like something we are using right now. The Internet.
In 1000 years, English will have evolved so much that anyone reading the letters will be like reading Latin.
This comment might be cliche, but hopefully not like in Idiocracy.
Funny here in Germany we often find time capsules from the 1940's only when we find em we have to evacuate half the town and call the bomb squad.
Its amazing .. I did the exact same thing in one of the most sacred places on earth .. I wish that someday someone will find my time capsule

I did this years ago at the house I grew up in. I love seeing this.
Only makes me want to attend MIT more. I positively cannot wait until mid-December for the Early Action Decision date.
From now on, all I associate with MIT is "The Institute"...
+TestrisMan Yeah. Fallout 4 is the best fallout yet! I say that with a lot of bias though as I live in boston.
Amazing game. Funny how on almost every video I go to now there is another FallOutFanLolYouKnowWhatImSayingProbablyNotCuzUIsDumb
Hank Hill Hey hank
Thats amazing ! 1000 yrs ! And the man said that it would have survived 2000-3000 years .

What are you guys going to do with it? I think you should re bury it. Since it isn't 2957 yet
The question is how the hell did we forget it was buried there?
This video brought me to tears.

They were on the westside and dug up a time capsule from Compton laboratories. Coincidence? Because Westside is known as Compton
Great channel!!! Love your personality
Didn't take them very long to forget where they buried. Yes, it should have been there as that's where it was put.
I made a time capsule and put all justin bieber songs plus news of kadarshian, Footage of Drake bling dance. It will be open in 2100 so people from the future know how they survived the past generation.
whelp, the duct tape still worked after nearly 60 years, shows how good it is
That looks like electrical tape.
They should put one time capsule each 100 year or so to let the future to compare how the technology have advanced each century!!!
very cool
So how'd you guys get a copy of the letters inside? >:)
I thought the time capsule was planted by someone from the future for us, the people of a bygone era. That would've been astounding.
I think MIT has a think for Kai Engel, they keep using his music everywhere (not that I complain)...
+bahadır Durmaz *thing
PUT IT BACK AND RESPECT THE PROFESSORS WISHES!!! if he was so important in 1957 there was a reason the extra costs and labor were involved so do whats right.
they still keep it safe place.... private.
WHY DID YOU OPEN IT!!! should have kept it closed for at least another 500!
+SameBasicRiff I don't think they did...
+SameBasicRiff if you paid attention, they showed a COPY of the original letter, they did not open the capsule
Sweggler looks like the photos they had laying on the table came from inside the capsule, like they just opened the top up and took everything out.
They didn't open it. They have pictures, video, and copies from when it was first buried. They reburied it with a new time capsule beside it.

did they open it?
+Detschizm nope, the letter they showed is a copy of the original letter kept from the burial
One day somebody in there gonna be like, Fuck that Imma open it
Who will be there to see the uncapped capsule? Now is the time...
A very cool video
wow thanks for not showing what was in it
why open it?
I want to make 1!!! how to make it?!?
I actually got an idea how to make 1... Gotta make it...
it says do not open until 2957! why would you open it?
It said 2057 AD
+Krypton Games No it said 2957 AD.
Yeah. why would they open it? Oh I know... THEY DIDN'T, YOU TURKEY FUCKING MORON.
Why not use plastic or they didn't have plastic containers back then
Even then, the 1947 Roswell crashed ET vehicle had already been treasonously kept from the world for 10 years. And that wasn't even the first ET related treason.
Amazing
I know , right!
Why'd they open it though? That's disrespecting the professor who buried it.
+Kouji Chan I didn't see anywhere in the video that they opened it.
fucking idiot.
MIT Rules !!!
M.I.T. makes me think of the 80's movie REAL GENIUS. Just being here made me download the torrent.
the publicity gurus text book hit counter video
why don't we have any gamer Time capsule? Put in all the Game of the Year for the past 10 or 15 years and there guide in it.
Open it right now, we want to know what's exactly inside on that capsule. 2957 is way too long.
i liked the part best where they pretend they had no idea it was there and also the guy who says he 'thinks' he knows how they sealed it when, well, there just so happens to be hours of videos of them doing it. what a joke

just fucking open it
Call me a pessimist, but I don't think humans will make it to the 2200s, let alone 2957...
+JcGross agreed but these retards could've let it stay longer then 58 years with a thousand year goal
Dear Lord, why am I getting so emotional on this?
I'm just thinking about how the people from the future would find and open this and try to translate the ancient English :,D

Did you open the time capsule? As other commenters have said, that's quite disrespectful and such a short-term decision. The video doesn't specify either way.
Well that was boring.. If you're only wondering what's inside the capsule, don't bother watching. They never tell.

I wonder if English will even be a known language in 900 years
It might be considered ancient, but with all the clues we left and will leave in the future, I am certain that the English of today will be able to be reconstructed and translated to whatever it is we speak by then.
Consider this, though: The written English is changing slower than the spoken English. They might have the same words as we do now, but they might also pronounce them differently. I'm confident, they will receive and understand.
:p

They shouldn't have opened it , they shouldve let it been a mystery and be hidden it somewhere else again
They didn't open it.

says don't open for 1000 years. what do they do.. open it. :/ could have just moved it to a better spot.
I hope you guys re-bury it. It clearly stated not to open till 2957 but you guys had to ruin this guys capsule.
kinda cool, but they ruined it, they defeated the whole purpose of a time capsule, come on mit, they should have just move to a new spot
Clear instructions not to open it -- were entirely ignored.
A beautiful letter should only be open in 2957, but all destroy by this lady ...
