Hello Ashley, I’ve been very disappointed in the newer thriller books. I love mysteries of all kinds and have found a new mystery for me written in the early 90s with an Alaska theme The Kate Shugak mysteries by Dana Stabenow. The first book is called “a cold day for murder“.
In general, I prefer literary mysteries or police procedurals, which are hard to find today. Aloha and thank you for your video.

I’m a mystery lover and reader but thriller is where the industry is at rn. I’m definitely getting more into the thriller genre

Have you tried Keigo Higashino? His books are so meticulously planned, reminds me of Agatha Christie. But his books are a bit unconventional since some are "why did it" or "how did it".

So glad to see Everyone in my Family Has Killed Somone and Everyone on This Train is a Suspect included on your list. Those two books were my favorite reads of 2023 and 2024. (Really looking forward to the third book in October.) I'm in the group that liked the second book even better, mostly because I feel that the first book, while very entertaining, had some plot holes and could have been a little tighter, and I felt like that was fixed and improved on in the second novel. I also love trains and this setting reminded me of Murder on the Orient Express, so it contributed to my overall enjoyment. I don't think those two books get talked about nearly enough!

I enjoyed Miracle Creek and will be reading Happiness Falls for bookclub. I also liked the mystery of Ellie Black. I’d say the last mystery I enjoyed was Middle of the Night by Riley Sager. It actually got me a little teary eyed a couple times. 😅

I had no idea that there was another book after Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone. My best friend and I buddy read together the 1st and had such a great time with it. Maybe she can be coaxed into another buddy read with me! I don't read mystery often, but sometimes it's a fun switch from SFF.

This is a good list. I've read all but 2 of them, and I'm also a reader that loves a British style mystery. Your previous review of Happiness Falls convinced me to check it out and I think is my favorite read of 2024 so far. Also liked Miracle Creek, but not quite as much as Happiness Falls. Angie Kim is definitely an auto-buy/read author for me. Lover her writing.
Also, please do the audio for Thursday Murder Club. The narrator changes between books 2 and 3, but I think both are fantastic. The second narrator knocks it out of the park in book 4. It's one of those series where the audio improves the reading experience because the narration brings the characters to life. Book 3 isn't quite as good as Book 2, but Book 4 is one of the best mysteries I've ever read. More for the character work than the mystery, though.
As far as recommendations, try Magpie Murders and the follow-up Moonflower Murders, which is even better, if you like the first book. They are very complicated mysteries. I think readers who like Stuart Turton and Janice Hallett would enjoy those books. I think those two books are the author's best, but I also enjoy his Hawthorne and Horowitz series which has five books now I think. I recommend that series if you just want a solid mystery, but none of them are five-star worthy. A solid 3.5-4 stars series for me. Also the series gets better with each book, so that's a plus.

I’ve been on the fence about reading Happiness Falls. You convinced me. I just finished The Other Half by Charlotte Vassell and it’s a British mystery. It’s about a murder among the posh crowd. She does poke fun at the ultra rich and I love that lol. First in a series and a debut. Liked the book and audiobook. Second book will be out soon.

I thought it was pretty cute, but got darker than I thought it would. not to say that it was dark, just... you know? right? okay. I tried to check goodreads to see if you had but it's being (fart noises)
