They proceeded to step into every single AOE while I desperately tried to keep them alive. It was hilarious watching them run around like idiots on purpose. And it was SO MUCH FUN having to pull every trick in the book, pun intended, to keep them alive. I’m proud to say nobody died until Amon’s Curtain Call. A sneaky DPS ran across the arena outside Rescue range and died. It was glorious!
I do miss 8-man Castrum. Writing DICBAG on the wall while waiting for Cid to get his slow butt over to blow it up. People forgetting to put the charges on the ceruleum pipes, so the entire group winds up backtracking to do it. No one bothering with the mortars on Livia, so having to handle them myself as a healer. Good times.
I loved doing the mortars on Livia as a healer. I got to do both my main roles at the same time then.. Tanking and healing, since she would focus target on the last mortar person. Of course, in the times before it was changed she did nothing damage wise, so after I shot her I would just /sit and wait for her to get hit again. XD

Biggest tip for Mentor Roulette coming from a 2000-year veteran: Queue only as DPS, specifically Summoner. Gets you mostly guildhests like Bockman, and for content that isn't Bockman you can hard carry with a caster res. RDM is not as good because most of the content you'd want to hard carry in Mentor Roulette are Free Trial Extremes where RDM won't have their res yet.
People always forget that RDM doesn't get their rez until StB content. Also, lvl50 SUM is still fun and really good, it just has lots of cast time since it's Ruin spam. Lvl 60 is when it gets good with Dreadwyrm Trance and only having to do around 10 hard cast bars per minute.
This! Found I was way more likely to get guildhests, trials, and raids on DPS so even if the wait time was a bit longer, the overall time spent doing the duty was a lot shorter. Also lets you dodge a lot of Castrum/Praetorium vs healer where I found I got dumped into the MSQ roulette dungeons often. SMN also has the benefit of not having too many buttons to press, which made it easier on my hands to grind out a long set of mentor roulettes as you spend most of your time hitting one or two buttons.
That Doma castle had me in tears. The baby tank who looks straight out of WoW who probably bought a level skip, the -- ahem -- "modestly" dressed Samurai who did nothing of note the entire dungeon, the Summoner who clearly was just trying to do anything to salvage this group, and the Scholar RUclipsr recording the whole thing -- what an absolutely hilarious epitome of the Crystal datacenter.

For future fights with Yiazmat's Butter Slicer, the best way to not get buttered is to stick to his butt. Just run right behind him as close as you can the whole way. He's unlikely to 180 on you, and even if he does you'll be close enough to just keep moving through him to dodge. Even the one he does while the floor is split between positive and negative, don't be afraid to run through the bad side to stick to him. Excited for your mentor roulette run. I did a stream a couple years back where I put on a burger king crown IRL and ran mentor roulette on repeat for a few hours and I got *SIX* ARR Extreme trials. "The downside about expert roulette is that tanks at 90 don't even need healers" Damn near true, the only tank that might need healing is DRK, and even then, if I run as Sage, I rarely ever have to actually use even an oGCD heal on them. 90 Tanks heal so much and the 90 dungeons do so little damage it's ridiculous. Also "Is this tank trying to get through this entire dungeon with JUST Blackest Night and no other mitigation?" Sums up every DRK I get in every dungeon
I keep getting tanks at absolute minimum item level for expert roulette that don't know how to use mitigation. Last week, I had a tank that had a _level 80 weapon_ equipped, which I pointed out before the first boss. They didn't swap to a higher level one (the lv89 free one...) until just before the final boss. They couldn't hold aggro unless the DPS didn't touch buttons for an age. (I really should have just bailed on the run, but I'm a stubborn nut some days.) Every expert roulette is either "I'm only hitting half my oGCD heals because the buttons got lonely" or "I threw literally everything I had at you and you still died, HOW?!" with no in between. Like a run where the tank gets a vuln or clipped by the occasional bit of orange means I may have to pay attention, but I don't get tanks that only get one vuln. I get tanks that somehow rack up 5+ vulns on a dungeon boss and are deathly allergic to their own cooldowns.
Oh man this was top tier content. Had a lot of laughs and ut was even informative sometimes. Miss those Endwalker days failing Smileton and having to travel 3 days to the moon on mount. That was some peak gaming back in the day!
I watched 2-3 episodes of you talking about choco tacos, Bionicle, and getting progressively more drunk; multiple times. I think it's fair to say you could talk about literally _anything_ and I'd be on board, this is the Cider Spider podcast now.
The video was so great, but I also gotta say, there are so many clip-able moments in this one video alone. You could absolutely kill it with either shorts or TikTok. Great content, man. Keep it up.
Cider, I mean this as sincerely as I can - I enjoy listening to you ramble as you do any content in the game, I LOVE your achievement series, and I always put it to listen to whenever I'm doing anything. You just have a fun way of rambling and talking and explaining things I already know. So I'm absolutely here for mentor series or roulette series!
Yes! I wish people would remember that there is tons of content in this game which makes it difficult for most people, especially casual gamers, to remember every single mechanic. Instead if something doesn't go right in a roulette, you get snide remarks and snotty comments from elites who think everyone should either play up to their level or go slash their own wrists. Also, I love Smileton. It's the only level 90 dungeon I can do all the mechanics on 100% of the time. I'm pretty good on The Dead Ends, also, but there are still some difficult mechanics I have a chance of failing if I'm not paying attention too closely. Additionally, the reason for doing mechanics in ARR dungeons (for the most part) is because taking multiple hits can kill you. I did a recent run of Castrum where one of the DPS' wanted to see if you can die by failing every mechanic and sure enough, he did.
One thing to note about Main Scenario roulette is the game doesn't super obviously tell you about poetics gear so a lot of newer players are entering those with significantly lower stats than a higher level player of the same job would have.
I don't think you can even get poetics gear until you finish 2.0, can you? Which means for the first runs of all the MSQ Roulette duties you can't use the Augmented Ironworks stuff.
@@Zanador as soon as you hit 50 you start getting tomes from doing roulettes if you're on the class thats 50+. hell even doing Palace on a 50 class gives you tomes. even if you're still like, progress wise, on the first Garuda encounter. OG Poetics gear is also in Mor Dhona, which you can just walk to if you want. That's the one thing i definitely like about ARR: if you have the balls, you can literally walk anywhere that isnt Limsa (cause if you start at Limsa, you're stuck there till Airship Pass, and if you DONT start Limsa, you're stuck AWAY from there, till Airship pass. and no, the boat at Vesper Bay doesnt work either. I tried.) and if you have a Chocobo/mount of your own, you can basically just *run* and pray you dont get killed on the way somewhere. Its glorious.
@@Zanador As I understand it, till StB, you can buy stuff at the appropriate Rowena vendor directly, though the one next to hub city aetherytes doesn't appear till after you clear the main expansion. You'd have to go directly to Mor Dhona. I know at one point for sure it worked for level 60 gear in Idyllshire, so I'm fairly certain it works in ARR, but I could be wrong and they could have changed it.
17:37 imagine my surprise when I got lazy on a Prae run a week or two back and one of Nero’s aoes just straight up murdered me xD Nothing else in that dungeon hurts!
As someone that recently completed the mentor roulette fully on tank. I think it would be interesting if you kept track of what kind of duty you loaded into as well as whether or not they were successfully completed. My tracking yielded some interesting information and I had a good time seeing the progress more tangibly as I went.
i did play during 8 person castrum times, but bc i didnt run msq roulette back then, i barely remember it, but the one thing i do remember of the old castrum is how you couldnt take more than like three steps without triggering a cutscene that was just (shows you the surroundings and gives no actually useful information)
This was great. I'm so excited for a mentor series! I feel like you're editing is just right. Not too much time where we're just watching dungeons that we play ourselves and enough commentary to keep those same dungeons new and interesting. I also like watching these types of videos to learn stuff about different dungeons that I hadn't known before. I like you testing how much damage you can take too XD
man this upload graced my sub box at the perfect time, today was my last day at work after my contract got cut Five Whole Weeks short and i really needed a pick-me-up. wasn't expecting the pick-me-up to be the worlds angriest little don't-you-dare-pick-me-up but i'll take the wins where i can get them
For Castrum, I remember for tanking: 1. Gotta time things correctly going up to the boss you were talking about stunning. If you didn't kill mobs in the right spots, Cid would do a victory lap adding ~1.5 min to the run. 2. At the airfield, tank could run and grab all the mobs off the towers and jump off, while a DPS would follow them to hit the search lights and the healers would just spam heal to keep the tank alive. OR, sometimes a sprout wouldn't know about not messing with the ground mobs before disabling the search lights, and then you had even more mobs for fun. 3. Airfield part 2: Players could let the autoloaders get destroyed and/or not know how to use the missile platforms, so you could get stuck on the first phase of the Livia fight. (Also, sometimes trolls would purposely get in and not fire, making it impossible to clear.)
might be late to comment on this video but, in case anyone is wondering, on keyboard, you can hold down CTRL and use your up and down arrow keys to adjust the center of the camera so you can zoom in and still have a good view of surroundings without going into 1st person view
played this in the bg while doing my own roulettes today ☺ love your achievement videos and streams, would definitely tune in for a mentor roulette series
People still think Praetorium takes forever but I timed it, and honestly, Praetorium is only about 5 minutes longer than Castrum because Castrum has way more trash and the fights take longer. When it's the time of Moogle Tomes, I always hate getting Castrum, because it is less tomes per minute. :)
13:51 I always do a "challenge" with my friends when we get ARR content on roulette, basically we can't move, only the very first move doesn't count (movement skills are also allowed) It's way more fun to plan ahead for mechanics than to do all of them correctly, and the damage on spreads and for staying in the bad aren't enough for a wipe as long as you manage your mana right So yeah, you don't NEED to move in ARR bosses most of the time
As someone who makes video game rigs for a living I’m going !!!! when cider talks about rigs 😂 (also yes to the mentor roulette side content this was extremely fun to watch)
not being condescending, just a scholar tip from watching you play: fairy has more consistent heals and reactions when she is placed, when she follows you around she tends to cast slower. Yes, this doesn't rly change much for dungeon roulettes where you can roll your face on the keyboard and win, but it's helpful nontheless
Tank Stance only auto-deactivates when your level gets synced down. Happens in dungeon syncs, Levequest syncs and Fate syncs. It really shouldn't, since every single dungeon in the game is above the minimum level required to learn the tank stance in the first place. A lot of tanks (including myself, since I don't main tank and only play them sparingly in roulettes) just forget that it's deactivated until they notice someone else getting hit.
@@EldarianIsotope that's what I mean though, it should default to being on rather than being off. Solo content, you're being attacked anyway so tank stance on doesn't hurt. Group content (even random stuff like FATEs), you're a tank, you're supposed to be getting hit. I heard that back in the day tank stance made you do less damage so there was a point to turning it off. But now it's pure enmity generation. The only reason you'd want to turn it off is if you're an off-tank.
Back when WP was current, the actual intended method for King Tonberry was to kill 2-3 adds then wait until he used Everyone’s Grudge before killing 2-3 more. Was a lot of fun.
Dang you are so right, Wanderer's Palace is awesome. I wish that old level cap dungeons roulette had better exp rewards because I usually end up skipping it unless I really want the tomes.
Secret SCH knowledge for Level 50 ARR is that Art of War has the same potency on a single target as Ruin. Art of War is a gain on one. This remains true until you unlock Broil at level 54.
Mentor roulette is actually going to drive you insane if that casual content castrum felt bad. Staring at the ceiling makes you forget what the floor looks like, but you'll see it in mentor 😂
As a fellow Diabolos resident, i love your content brother, i can’t wait to see the mentor roulette series, i should run my mentor roulettes, mayhaps we may encounter eachother and you can worry less about the chaos that will most certainly ensue! Keep up the great my smol friend and content creator! ^^
5:34 Complaining that the tank is not using mits while oblation is up is such a mentor roulette mood. I just wish we had an Extreme roulette to really get the feel for what mentor is like. >:3
Can't wait to see the mentor roulette series. I really wanna unlock it myself but i'm a fair ways off commendation wise, but one day I will. *thumbs up* Good luck with the grind fam!
As someone who did the Mentor Roulette grind back in 2021 during the wait for Endwalker, it is honestly its own beast. I kept a running tally of how many times an EX actually showed up and the number was quite low. (300 at the top of my head?) Almost always ARR ones with a sprinkle of Ratholos. Sadly a lot of them did not clear because other mentors would do the “lol just use pf” and leave strat and once people leave EX, it is obviously very hard to replace them so the instance is often abandoned. Rinse repeat a couple times before you get dropped into something else. It was a very frustrating experience at times mainly because of that but overall wasn’t too bad. Guildhests were my favorite to get. Hope your experience is smooth!
Meanwhile, while I am running the roulette, I am hoping to get the EX trials. I enjoy doing them synced, relearning mechanics, and wish more people would normalize it in Mentor Roulette. Hell, I say they should add a EX Roulette with rewards that could get normal queueing people into them. The ones I dislike getting the most are guildhests.... but the main reason I got he roulette is just for the sheer random from so much different things you can get, and the RNG of what it could be is a nice spice to it. The reason most EX are ARR though is 90% of the time it'll be Sprouts not understanding the situation that queue into them. I know I did for Garuda EX in the day, Odin as well. Hell, I spent a day trying to queue up for the first Coils one time when I started in 3.x. XD
Funny thing is, most of the ARR Extremes are so easy synced that you can clear them within 1-3 pulls even with people who are basically blind to the fight. Even at MINE, some of them are a total cakewalk. Any mentor who leaves immediately doesn't deserve their mentor crown tbh
@@MissPoplarLeaf This is true. I think the hardest one I had so far was Shiva a couple times, only cause healers kept getting caught in crossfire. Titan is the most common afterwards, and isn't a perma death fall anymore so isn't terrible.
What I like to do with roulettes, for variety, is roll “/random 19” to get a number between 1 and 19, with 19 being the number of non-limited jobs. I use that to determine what job to run a roulette as (going in order of tanks 1-4, healers 5-8, melee 9-13, ranged 14-16, and magic 17-19). Helps spice things up, especially with jobs I barely have a handle on lol.
15:30 i remember that room with the gate you had to wait on where everyone collectivly just fucked around for like 5 minutes waiting on the gate to open cause the boss dies WAY too fast.
16:29 when I got Ultima weapon on ms dungeon as a sage, I did not move to dodge any aoes and survived all of then xD (even the one with magitek bits on second phase while Ultima was charging citadel buster in my direction) that was sick! I still have the video of it
Talking about both great pulls and Castrum and you missed mentioning that Castrum 8-man had an epically long pull that I always loved. Also the first Moogle Tomestone event I ever took part in had Wanderer's Palace in it and it was the quickest synched dungeon to run so I got super good at full pulling that as tank. So much fun optimizing that.
I love running roulettes with the homies after work bc its a nice lil warm up before we jump into savage or ultimate content where we can just chitchat before we have to lock in
it's 'ant-ee' for me Most of the time, with 'ant-eye' popping up more rarely. i can't even think of a sentence i'd use ant-eye in off the top of my head lmao and alisaie's arr voice jump scared me, i almost thought you just put footage up from some old british show bc i'd forgotten she sounded like a bridge to terebithia protaganist 😭 very much looking forward to the mentor series!! :D especially curious as to how many you'll actually be able to complete vs how many sprouts/randos give up on just bc they don't get it or deem it too frustrating/difficult and which content that might be
I remember Full Party Praetorium well. My favorite run was my little tiny min-height Femmiqo and the rest of the party was lalas. She looked like a teacher chaperoning the most chaotic field trip ever and the party was leaning into the theme.

I can't believe he called Ridorana Lighthouse!
Video liked. Fair's fair.
One thing to note about Main Scenario roulette is the game doesn't super obviously tell you about poetics gear so a lot of newer players are entering those with significantly lower stats than a higher level player of the same job would have.
Good luck figuring out what currencies are spent where. I feel the only time it's obvious is with beast tribes.
P11's boss is the Tengu model you see in Stormblood's The Swallow's Compass dungeon, the first boss
Huh, I've never noticed but now that you've said it, yeah neat.
Alliance roulette is actually pretty quick for DPS. Keep in mind you need 15 of them for every 6 healers and 3 tanks.
When Thalia was still weekly, you could almost insta queue it on DPS on Tuesdays.
I like this format a lot honestly! Feels like casual fun getti bg to chat and explore the random areas of FFXIV
17:37 imagine my surprise when I got lazy on a Prae run a week or two back and one of Nero’s aoes just straight up murdered me xD Nothing else in that dungeon hurts!
You can die in Prae? Wow, you learn something new every day.
As someone that recently completed the mentor roulette fully on tank. I think it would be interesting if you kept track of what kind of duty you loaded into as well as whether or not they were successfully completed. My tracking yielded some interesting information and I had a good time seeing the progress more tangibly as I went.
Any interesting insights, like duties that showed up surprisingly often?
Yay data lol
The recent "angry" reference make me really wish for a shadowbringer post patch and endwalker "small and angry" series continuation
'Not 3 feet outside the sacred soil' use the glowy rescue button!
Honestly I am running Mentor roulette almost everyday just for fun. The Mentor roulette experience is really a bit different than all other roulettes.
i did play during 8 person castrum times, but bc i didnt run msq roulette back then, i barely remember it, but the one thing i do remember of the old castrum is how you couldnt take more than like three steps without triggering a cutscene that was just (shows you the surroundings and gives no actually useful information)
Pitch shifted tremble is the funniest thing ever put into any video and idk why
man this upload graced my sub box at the perfect time, today was my last day at work after my contract got cut Five Whole Weeks short and i really needed a pick-me-up. wasn't expecting the pick-me-up to be the worlds angriest little don't-you-dare-pick-me-up but i'll take the wins where i can get them
That's rough about your job, hope you find something new soon.
Lmao your "don't-you-dare-pick-me-up pick-me-up" joke is brilliant! Good luck in the job search.
For Castrum, I remember for tanking:
(Also, sometimes trolls would purposely get in and not fire, making it impossible to clear.)
might be late to comment on this video but, in case anyone is wondering, on keyboard, you can hold down CTRL and use your up and down arrow keys to adjust the center of the camera so you can zoom in and still have a good view of surroundings without going into 1st person view
yay, more Ciderspider content is always welcome! I will 100% watch your mentor roulette shenanigans, this was top notch
Well shit, the mad baby nailed the Ridorana Lighthouse call out, I guess I _have_ to like the video.
The sacred soil and asylum buffs. It's still insane how huge both are now
AST's Earthly Star too
Dude, you make watching these things ACTUALLY fun to watch! So yeah, I'd happily watch you suffe- I mean, have fun in Mentor Roulette xD
played this in the bg while doing my own roulettes today ☺ love your achievement videos and streams, would definitely tune in for a mentor roulette series
Watching this series has inspired me to work on my own achievement list. A little, anyway. lol
Great vid as always, Cider. :)
Always excited for more Cider Spider content! Mentor roulettes? Heck yeah!
Gotta admire the dedication to add all those sound effects for all the things.
"Stupid lady in Sharlayan with the water jug"
Thaliak: *shocked pikachu face*
Cider on Monday?! Hell Yeah!
All the bosses in Lighthouse are FF12 espers iirc. Kinda cool callback.
All except the last, which was 12's ultimate superboss from the Clan Centurio questline
"Veteren of 1000 psychic wars" is a perfect look when the first enemy you see is flying Mike Wazowski.
I was having a terrible day so thank you for this upload
13:51 I always do a "challenge" with my friends when we get ARR content on roulette, basically we can't move, only the very first move doesn't count (movement skills are also allowed)
It's way more fun to plan ahead for mechanics than to do all of them correctly, and the damage on spreads and for staying in the bad aren't enough for a wipe as long as you manage your mana right
So yeah, you don't NEED to move in ARR bosses most of the time
As someone who makes video game rigs for a living I’m going !!!! when cider talks about rigs 😂 (also yes to the mentor roulette side content this was extremely fun to watch)
not being condescending, just a scholar tip from watching you play: fairy has more consistent heals and reactions when she is placed, when she follows you around she tends to cast slower.
Yes, this doesn't rly change much for dungeon roulettes where you can roll your face on the keyboard and win, but it's helpful nontheless
A Cider video first thing in the morning? Must be our lucky day :D
10:31 There's not always a Tank Stance Issue... but if there is, it's either a dungeon around lvl30-40 or Doma Castle.
Since Gatherer's get a lot of their buffs to activate automatically, maybe they should change it so that tank stance is on by default.
The german caster LB gave me whiplash.
Keep up the good work
Dang you are so right, Wanderer's Palace is awesome. I wish that old level cap dungeons roulette had better exp rewards because I usually end up skipping it unless I really want the tomes.
Also, you get a fair bit more info about the history of the place if you play Scholar.
Secret SCH knowledge for Level 50 ARR is that Art of War has the same potency on a single target as Ruin.
Art of War is a gain on one. This remains true until you unlock Broil at level 54.
I did not know this, thank you wise one.
This was a delight to listen to!
Was not expecting a blue oyster cult reference in the first minute of a cider spider video.
The LAG "KHEELL" on the Tonberry is funnier than it should be
I've been waiting for the mentor roulette series ever since episode one of this! I cant wait?
I honestly would love to listen to you riff like this for forever
Blue Oyster Cult reference ? nice
5:34 Complaining that the tank is not using mits while oblation is up is such a mentor roulette mood.
I just wish we had an Extreme roulette to really get the feel for what mentor is like. >:3
One more effect for the soundboard! BUTTAH!
Man, seeing the roulettes makes me realise just how much FF14 content is just... word for word from older FF games.
Ff14 is a love letter to the series but especially to ffv, which is fair bc ffv's the best mainline game in the series
@@InnocentGuillotineit’s also the one that perfected the job system
gotta love that mega-attack.
buttah, buttah, buttah buttah
I love that you always have the quest Child Labor tracked in these videos.
Can't wait to see the mentor roulette series. I really wanna unlock it myself but i'm a fair ways off commendation wise, but one day I will. *thumbs up* Good luck with the grind fam!
2:00 Giraffe TAIL!?!?!! I beg your pardon!?!?!?!?
how many different sound effects will cider spider add before the bit becomes too much work
TREMBLE lives in my head rent free thanks to this guy
Send help
@@apljackI enjoy them too! My favorite was Titan or Levi, since at that time if you got knocked off you didn't come back. LOL
Blue Oyster Cult reference less than 90 seconds in, love it.
15:30 i remember that room with the gate you had to wait on where everyone collectivly just fucked around for like 5 minutes waiting on the gate to open cause the boss dies WAY too fast.
the sound edit on the proximity was golden.
I'm down to watch a video like this each week. And the added threat of earlier expansion hard content ia potentially hilarious.
16:29
when I got Ultima weapon on ms dungeon as a sage, I did not move to dodge any aoes and survived all of then xD
(even the one with magitek bits on second phase while Ultima was charging citadel buster in my direction) that was sick!
I like your videos! I'm interested in seeing you tackle mentor roulette.
I love running roulettes with the homies after work bc its a nice lil warm up before we jump into savage or ultimate content where we can just chitchat before we have to lock in
I'm still working on unlocking Mentor Roulette (down to 4 Extremes to clear) but looking forward to seeing you riff on all the sprouts being sprouts.
After so long, hearing ‘1 is not a prime number,’ activated so much nostalgia in me XD
it's 'ant-ee' for me Most of the time, with 'ant-eye' popping up more rarely. i can't even think of a sentence i'd use ant-eye in off the top of my head lmao and alisaie's arr voice jump scared me, i almost thought you just put footage up from some old british show bc i'd forgotten she sounded like a bridge to terebithia protaganist 😭
very much looking forward to the mentor series!!
Nice series looking forward to more 😊
