Pete Seeger sang a version where one verse might be "I'll ask my Father, to come and go with me" and the next verse would be a response "If he says no, I'll go alone" ... and so on. In the Flatt and Scruggs version, there is only one verse about Father: "If Father won't go, won't hinder me" making the song half as long. We thought that was a mighty fine idea. 🤠
