      i just realized dynamic poses in comics are just animation key frames.....and that's why the gesture have to be immediately and clearly communicated (cuz it's not animated)
      hence why we have to exaggerate force to draw actions

    • @nathanwood4762
      @nathanwood4762 3 года назад +42

      Sketch a lot. If you are sketching, you are moving forward. Some drawing skills are easier to learn from quickly making sketch after sketch, than from spending a long time trying to make one drawing come out right. The sketches may look ugly (some will miraculously look great), but the experience you get from making them is something you can apply to the next drawing. Everybody has thousands of poor drawings in them. May as well get them out so you can move on to the good drawings. That's how most artists got good.

    Oh man.. you can’t even begin to fathom how helpful this was for me man! Very appreciated for making this video honestly. I’ve watched this literally 10 times now. I would actually and truthfully consider myself quite the good artist, & always have been since I was a little kid (just turned 27), but mostly with copy art/drawings (drawing what I see, & or of an already existing picture, etc..). A few years ago I decided I wholeheartedly wanted to become a legit mangaka & draw nothing but manga alone, & eventually make my own manga with the story and structure, etc I’ve put so many years into writing out & planning, etc. the hardest part was definitely learning to draw anything & everything (literally..) from off head without reference most of the time, just all me & my mind. After like 5 years now I’ve gotten really REALLY far honestly, & take pride in that fact. Though, I do still have trouble with certain things a decent amount of times (which I feel is to be expected really.. I mean I’m not Tite Kubo, Hiro Mashima, or Eiichiro Oda! Lol). One thing I’ve been adamantly working on perfecting better is this here. Basically better & less stiff poses, angles, & fluidity to them when drawing new characters & fight scenes etc. I wanted better postures, poses, gestures, etc.. much more dynamic & to pop more. I’ve been doing good, but sometimes I’ll get really tripped up on certain angles, or trying to comprehend why something goes the way it does, the physics to it, & just getting the full on mechanics to it all, & not just one specific area etc. & even though I already know most of this stuff (what this video is covering) & put it into practice right now.. I still feel I could do it better so my work looks more like a truly professional mangaka’s would. So this video was a great help to see you really explain everything & why it is you do it the way you do, & just seeing it done from someone who’s far better than I am in all honesty, & get a better outside perspective on things! So thank you man. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos now for areas I feel I could do better on. Any video I watch, I literally watch them at least 10 times too lol. Cause I want to be able to drill it all into my head completely & really get it down. That’s one thing I’m good at is being able to watch and then retain it for later & have it down, & then practice with using what I’ve retained to my memory. Your vids are great for this for me! I’ll be excitedly looking out for more in the future that I feel I could definitely benefit from. Thanks again! Keep at it homie👌🏻✌🏻

    Finally I understood what actually gestures are for. This is some kind of an exaggeration of a motion, or forces that act on a body.
    Karate gestures at the end of the video are actually on point even without fixing them. When people perform kata slowly, stopping after each move, they actually do look stiff because they have to remain that position without moving for short period of time. But the overall idea of force acting on the body was explained very well, thank you

    Btw your punching pose at 14:13 the neck of the figure will feel the jerk when the figure lands the punch. The correct movement would be the the chin moving towards the chest and at the time of landing the punch being all the way near the chest to complete the follow through motion which is as close to a complete circle or an ellipse as it can be.

    THANK YOU!!! I knew the secret to making better figure drawings was gesture, but this video really helped me to understand why and how.

    Thank u David. Now i know why my art actions look stale! Actually, i didn't have knowledge of CG distribution in art.

    David, you made me actually practice along and feel something that I wasn't quite getting from Mike´s book. I didn`t quite feel how I should start, but watching you do it has anatural didactic quality to it, monkey see monkey do.
