I can be wrong, but I think cockatrice was a hybrid of a Dragon and a Chicken that could petrify anyone who looked directly into its eyes (like the gorgon), but again I can be wrong.

there's a Polish legend saying that there was a 'Basilisk' (aka a Cockatrice) living in a basement of someone's house in Warsaw, anything that looked in it's eyes would be turned to stone so this one guy dressed himself in a shiny armour and stood in front of the Basilisk with closed eyes. The Basilisk looked at him and the shiny armour reflected the "bird's" face, therefore turning it to stone. :)

I think the new mythical is pretty nice. The flying animation is so smooth in my opinion, and the wings are interesting (in that they have gradients and use flexible beams rather than pieces for the membranes) The glowing eye effect is pretty nice also. It's no Phoenix fire, but it's nice to have.
Overall I think the Phoenix is worth it just a bit more, but the Cockatrice is very cool.
